"There's a red car coming up fast behind," Tracy Bond said. "Do you want me to lose him?"

James Bond wanted to say no, that they had all the time in the world, but something in his gut told him the Maserati was bad news. He listened to his gut. "Yes," he said. "Lose him."

Tracy accelerated the Lancia to 100, and the feeling in James' gut was confirmed when the Maserati kept up with them. At 120, the Maserati made an attempt to overtake the Lancia, and, looking in the rear view mirror, his fears were confirmed. "Tracy," he said. "As soon as the Maserati is in the passing lane, slam on the brakes."

As Tracy hit the brakes, James unholstered the Walther PPK he instinctively kept in his shoulder holster, and as the Maserati caught up with the Lancia, he emptied the magazine into it. The Maserati swerved erratically, and left the road, smashing into a copse.

As the Lancia skidded to a stop, Bond loaded a fresh clip into his gun, and approached the Maserati. When he reached the car, he opened the driver's door, and saw the lifeless body of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, dead from bullet wounds to the head and chest. Next to him was the wounded but still alive Irma Bunt. As she reached for an automatic gun, Bond fired one shot that struck her between the eyes, killing her instantly.

As Bond started back to the Lancia, an officer of the Autobahn Patrol, who had witnessed the killing of Irma Bunt, stopped him. "They were trying to kill me," Bond said. "I was acting in self defence."

The officer looked into the Maserati, and saw the automatic clutched in Irma Bunt's dead fingers. Something about her and her companion convinced the officer that Bond was telling the truth. "Right," the officer said in German. "On your way," he continued, waving Bond along.

"Let's get going," Bond said, entering the Lancia.

"Where?" Tracy asked.

"Anywhere," Bond said. "But not too fast. We've got all the time in the world."
