"Deb! Hey..Deb!"
Over the phone. She wrinkled her nose, the sound of his voice making her stomach turn. Everything about him was making her sick right then, and yet, she couldn't hang up.
"I said I was sorry, how much more do I have to do to convince you that I.."
"You what, John?"
The phone fell quiet, and she could hear each breath of his. Faster and faster he gasped for air. trying to find some way of digging himself out of the grave he had started to dig for himself.
"This is..insane Deb. You can't understand me being...busy, and away, and not being able.."
"No, I don't understand you not picking up a phone, or driving by on your way to the airport." she answered. The phone fell silent again."I get sick of arguing to this disembodied voice. You...You don't seem real to me."
She heard him take a violent breath."John?"
"I'm sorry" his cell phone cackled and broke up every now and then. Deb sat straighter, resting her aching back against the couch."John?"
There was a loud knock on her door.
"Deb, I know we need...to talk"
"Hold on, let me get the door" she set the phone down, not bothering to look up at the clock. Not since she had left Greg. Sometimes Leon came by, at the oddest hours of the night, just looking for a place to sleep.
"Hey" the voice said into the phone. Deb brought her eyes up to see a worn looking Carter, with longish hair, and shadows under his eyes, and on his cheeks."Deb?"
Tears formed in the corner of her eyes,her hand to her mouth in shock."jj..john?"
he closed the phone in his hand, a small smile forming on his exhausted face.He pried her hand off her mouth, and kissed her palm, looking up at her with sad eyes.
Deb started to cry.

Trembling fingers searched his face, lips kissing blindly. He cupped his palm over her cheek, his thumb pushing away the tears that wouldn't stop falling."I'm sorry, Deb"
She shook her head, kissing him.
"I didn't mean..."
Deb pushed away and looked at him."I accept your apology" she whispered as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
