Plot - What if the reason Mirabel did not get a gift is due to her being a witch? When Mirabel turns 11, a letter from Hogwarts arrive arrives and everything changes for the young girl and her magical family. There will be secrets, danger and love.

Author's note

Silver - This is a rewrite of A Different Kind of Magic book 1, I recently re-read it and so many mistakes, so I decided to rewrite the story, the previous one will remain up till I have caught up to where I got up to. I did look to see that there was a magic school for those in South America, but there is not a lot of information given about the school, I don't feel confident in writing about the culture of Colombia and south America. Also I do not know Spanish, I use google translate. Also I am including that Bruno is Mirabel's father, but due to the vision he had, he hid away to protect Mirabel, even though he swore that he had seen strange events around his daughter.

Loki - Also Silver will continue Frozen Visions, there will not be a rewrite of that even though there was a note at the end of the latest chapter about her thinking about it. The bottom of this chapter, are the actors and actresses I have cast for, while over on AO3 are the pictures and a different layout.

Encanto, Colombia
18th of July, 1985
1:30am

A man with shoulder length curly black hair stood in a room surrounded by sand with an emerald glass plate that had an image on it in his hands with a look of shock on his face. This man was Bruno Madrigal and he was gifted with the power of a seer, he created the emerald glass plates that showed the outcome of a vision.

"This... this has not happened before" he muttered to himself tilting the plate slightly where the image changed and he sat down heavily on the sand.

Bruno felt fear enter his heart for he knew his family, mainly his mother and how she would react if she saw the emerald plate and she wouldn't even think about tilting the tablet to see there was also another future, she would only see the worst outcome.

"I... I have to leave in order to protect my daughter... I... oh Marlene I am so sorry for not being strong enough to protect our daughter... I wish I knew where you were" Bruno cried as he dropped his head as tears fell.

After an hour of trying to calm himself, Bruno wiped the tear marks away before getting to his feet and started to pace. He knew that if his mother or anyone saw the emerald vision plate, they would assume the worst outcome, not even thinking about tilting it or even asking Bruno to explain the vision (they never did that anyway) and Bruno paused in his pacing.

"I can not let mother or anyone find this vision..." Bruno's eyes widen "I.. I am going have to leave... I have to leave to protect Mirabel" Bruno muttered to himself and he looked at the emerald glass plate and picked it up.

Bruno took a deep breath and threw it as hard as he could into the wall and it shattered as Bruno took deep breaths. He swallowed as he opened the vision cave and looked to his chested drawers to where there were photos and he walked over to where he and a woman were smiling at each other with love in their eyes.

"Marlene, I wish I knew where you were and if you were alright... Mirabel needs you, I need you" Bruno whispered and he sighed before packing the photos away into a box. Then packed a bag filled with his clothes and a few keepsakes that he wanted to keep with him.

Then it was time for him to leave and so he moved quietly down to the Nursery and as he opened the door quietly, he smiled sadly seeing his only child curled up around a small butterfly plush that Marlene had given their daughter before leaving to where ever she has disappeared to and he walked silently over to his little girl.

"Good bye mi mariposita, I love you always and forever" Bruno whispered keeping his voice quiet from his niece who had sensitive hearing and also not to wake his daughter.

Once he left the nursery, he went back up to his room and grabbed the bag filled with clothes and small keepsakes. As Bruno closed his room door and he walked quietly to the kitchen and left a note for everyone.

Dear everyone,
I am sorry for leaving like this, but I can no longer stay here... it breaks my heart to do this but I have to leave... please care for my daughter, get her to believe that Julieta and Agustin are her parents... give no mention of me... ban even a mention of me... make me the boogeyman... spread the word to the village... it is better this way... all I ask is please treat Mirabel right, do not cast her out cause she did not get a gift.
Bruno

Bruno folded the letter and placed it on Julieta's plate knowing she and Agustin are the first to wake and get breakfast started. Bruno finally started to walk towards the front door with his heart breaking with every step and he paused as Casita started to tap the tiles quietly and Bruno saw the tiles move up stairs and then a painting opened.

"You don't want me to leave, do you?" Bruno whispered to the house and two tiles shook and Bruno looked over to the Nursery, where his daughter slept and he looked back to the painting before he nodded.

Bruno walked up the stairs quietly with Casita's help and slipped in to the hole behind the painting which was closed behind him. Bruno walked down the dusty hallway and found a small hideaway, where he made his new small room and waited for the reaction of his family to his small letter.

His sister Julieta was the first to awaken followed by her husband Agustin then Pepa and Felix walk in. Julieta had walked pass her seat and missed seeing the letter, but Felix noticed it.

"Dolores, please say nothing about me being here... I promise to explain everything to you later on" Bruno whispered seeing Dolores entering the room and he saw that she gave the smallest nod.

"Julieta, you missed this" Felix stated as he walked over to Julieta's place at the table and picked up the letter.

"Where is Bruno? And why is Mirabel not up yet?" his mother asked entering just behind Dolores with Isabela at her side.

"I am letting Mirabel sleep in, just a little bit... last night was hard on her" Dolores replied and his mother looked to Dolores in shock., however before his mother could say anything there was a gasp from Julieta, who had tears forming.

"Julieta, what is wrong?" his mother asked with worry and walked over to her eldest triplet.

"Bruno... he... he has... he has run away" everyone gasped as Agustin grabbed his wife as she cried, while Pepa had rain fall on her and Felix.

His mother went and grabbed the letter and read it out loud, which caused his sobrinas and sobrino to gasp out in shock.

"Then... then we shall do... do as he asks..." his mother turned to look at Dolores "Dolores... can... can you hear him at all around the Encanto?" his mother asked calmly with her voice breaking and Dolores shook her head.

"I am sorry Abuela, but I can not hear him" Dolores replied and Alma sighed heavily leaning on her chair slightly before she straighten her back.

"Then we shall do as he asks... it... I know it hurts, but Bruno... he has asked this of us" Alma said with her heart hurting and everyone nodded with tears in their eyes.

Everyone watched as Alma left the kitchen with the letter in hand and went upstairs.

"Felix, Agustin... could you head down to the village and inform them that we are having a day of just family... also spread the word of Bruno leaving" Julieta stated and the two men agreed leaving for the village.

"Julieta, I will take the Children outside... you take all the time you need to get breakfast sorted" Pepa stated surprising Bruno and he watched as his sisters hugged.

As the hours ticked by, Bruno saw Dolores coming back from whatever Pepa had her doing and Bruno went to the portrait where he entered.

"Dolores... thank you for not telling anyone that I was still here" Bruno said as Dolores climbed through the portrait.

"You are welcome, Tio Bruno... but now please answer me... Why do you hide, Tio Bruno? Why leave that note?" Dolores asked with a soft voice and Bruno bit his lip before sighing.

"Dolores... is there anyone else around that could hear us?" Bruno asked his sobrina and he waited for her answer.

Prior to Marlene's disappearance, Marlene and Dolores were close and he wished Marlene told him more of her history. She gave him only a few hints with the promise to explain when she returned. Sadly she never returned leaving him as a single parent and he felt lost without her.

"No... they are out in the village, I decided to come back early to get an answer about why you are hiding and staying away from Mira?" Dolores asked calmly and Bruno looked down.

"I am trusting you deeply with this, I will not tell you the vision I had... only that I left to protect Mirabel... please for me get Mirabel to believe Julieta and Agustin are her... her parents" Bruno said sadly and Dolores felt for her uncle.

"Tio... what did you see?" Dolores whispered looking at her tio with concern and Bruno smiled grateful at the kindness of his sobrina.

"Mi querida sobrina... I will only say that there are two futures with Mirabel, I could not let Abuela see them... she would have only seen the bad outcome" Bruno explained and Dolores looked towards the village.

"I will keep your secret... is there anything else?" Dolores asked and Bruno felt tears form in his eyes.

"Just protect her... keep her safe... keep her happy" Bruno whispered as tears fell and Dolores felt tears form in her eyes as well.

"Te lo prometo tio Bruno " Dolores told him and he gave her a hug before he sent her off and he leaned against the wall wishing for his wife by his side.

That following week, everyone made sure never to mention Bruno or that Mirabel was his child as Bruno watched from the walls as tears fell.

"I will always watch over you, Mirabel... mi mariposita" Bruno whispered and he looked away and went back to his chair with only the company of rats.

6 years later

Casita
Encanto, Colombia
20th of July, 1991
7:15am

There was a strange sight of an owl flying over the mountain that surrounded Encanto as the sun rose for another beautiful day and headed straight for the Madrigal home, where the residents were setting up for breakfast. There were 10 people and a baby seated around a long table.

"Hm..." Dolores squeaked "there is an owl flying this way and it does not sound like a local species of owl" Dolores muttered just loud enough for her mother to hear as she looked towards the sky with a frown trying to find the owl.

"That is strange... " Pepa asked looking at her eldest and only daughter, however before she could speak there was a soft crack in the air which had Dolores stand in alarm which had Alma standing up as well.

"What was that?" Alma asked her granddaughter and before Dolores could reply, everyone saw that a tall, rather severe-looking woman with black hair in a tight bun and wearing an emerald dress appeared walking out from the trees.

"Oh dear, I did not realise you would be eating outside... are you all family?" the woman asked and Alma looked at her with a slight glare.

"Who are you first? Barraging onto my property" Alma demanded as Pepa handed Antonio over to Felix and the woman stood up straighter looking into Alma's eyes.

"My name is Minerva McGonagall, please answer my question of are you all family?" Minerva stated calmly and the Madrigals looked uncertain.

"We are family..." Mirabel tilted her head "why do you ask?" Mirabel answered followed by a question which had Alma glare towards her youngest granddaughter, who ignored the glare keeping her eyes on this Minerva McGonagall, who looked towards her with a kind smile.

"Are you Mirabel Madrigal?" Minerva asked softly and Mirabel nodded looking confused.

"I am" Mirabel answered and no one saw that Dolores glanced quickly to Casita, she knew that her tio would be confused seeing a strange woman near his daughter and Dolores hoped that the family and this Minerva moved into Casita so her tip could hear whatever this Minerva wanted with Mirabel.

"Who are you parents?" Minerva asked which drew Dolores eyes back to her as her Tia Julieta stepped forward with Tio Agustin just behind her.

"I am, my name is Julieta and this is my husband Agustin..." Julieta stated and Minerva nodded.

"Is there somewhere private that we can go and chat, so we are not overheard by others of this village" Minerva asked glancing around the garden and towards the village before looking back to Julieta, however before Julieta could say anything Alma took a step forward.

"What you have to say will be heard by the whole family, there are no secrets in my family" Minerva looked to her "why are you here stranger?" Alma demanded once again and Minerva raise an eyebrow at the demanding Alma.

"As I stated, I wish for us to go somewhere private and I can explain everything to you, so could we go into the home so we can talk without others of the village hearing" Minerva asked kindly yet with a firm voice and Alma nodded still with distrusting eyes. Soon everyone filed into the house as Mirabel was shielded by Isabela and Luisa.

As Dolores entered Casita, she heard her Tio move into a better spot and felt his eyes on her.

"Dolores, who is that?" Bruno asked quietly watching from a near by gap and Dolores glanced slightly to show she was listening to him with a small tilt of her head to tell him to listen.

"So why are you here? Strangers do not come to Encanto nor are they welcome" Alma stated crossing her arms and the family sat down in the lounge.

"I am here to deliver this for Mirabel Madrigal" Minerva handed a strange looking letter to Mirabel who frowned "you are a witch Miss Madrigal" Minerva stated as Mirabel looked shocked.

Dolores heard her uncle drop heavily into to his knees and she could hear him mutter.

"How could I have forgotten what Marlene told me, I know she promised to explain when she returned, but she never did... oh I knew Mirabel had a gift of something yet not from the candle... her gift is the same as Marlene... just not a gift that mama would have expected... " Bruno sighed heavily "Dolores, don't alert anyone, I... I am going to come out... I need to help support my daughter in this reveal" Bruno whispered softly and Dolores swallowed as she heard walking through the narrow hallways behind the walls.

"The gift ceremony..." Alma started and Dolores swallowed hearing her tio get closer and she knew family would shout in shock as Bruno chose to appear, she wanted to go back to her room and protect her ears.

"Did not work cause she already had a power within, which got got from her mother" everyone shot to their feet in surprise at hearing the new voice and turned to see Bruno standing there in the doorway looking slightly awkward "I always had a feeling that Mirabel would not get a gift from the candle due to well what her mother told me" Bruno decided not to say Marlene's name for it still hurt him deeply that she left him and he saw that his mother, siblings and brothers in law looked incredulous at seeing him again, while his sobrinas and sobrino were just gaping at him, apart from Dolores who looked at him with a small proud smile and then he glanced to see his daughter's reaction and he saw there were tears falling from her eyes as she stood in shock.

"Brunito?" Abuela whispered in shock as her eyes widen as tears started to form as she watched her son step forward looking at McGonagall.

"Madam, I am Mirabel's father and I am here to support my daughter" Bruno stated calmly that shook Mirabel from her shock for she ran forward to the shock of everyone and jumped at Bruno, who caught her.

"Papa... you're here" Mirabel cried into Bruno's shoulder as he hugged her close kissing the top of her head.

"I am so sorry, Mira... I am so sorry I left" Bruno whispered as he kissed his daughter's head again and held her in his arms.

"Where did you come from? How did you know to come here now?" Minerva asked with her eyes narrowing and Bruno looked at her then slightly to the family.

"I have been hiding in the walls, been in the walls for six years... my family and I are special... it is a bit of a story but we all have gifts... apart from Mirabel and Antonio... well now I know Mirabel has magic just not from where the rest of the family got their magic" Bruno said with a soft smile looking to the baby in Felix's arms seeing as Pepa was in shock and on her knees looking at Bruno.

"Gifts?" Minerva asked with an eyebrow raise and Alma sighed.

"46 years ago, my husband gave his life to protect mine and our children... his sacrifice blessed this valley and gave us a home... when my children Julieta, Pepa and Bruno were 5, they were given a power..." Alma explained and then looked to her children.

"Could you please all introduce yourselves and your children?" Minerva asked before anyone could speak.

"I introduced myself and my husband outside, so these are my daughters Isabela and Luisa... my gift that I can heal with food, pretty much anything but mental health, genetic ailments and of course death" Julieta said as her two daughters nodded their heads at Minerva and Minerva looked impressed at the gift.

"Nothing can cure death for it is a part of life" Minerva said and everyone nodded in agreement.

"I... I can... Bruno?" Pepa whispered still in shock at seeing her little brother and Bruno put Mirabel down, knowing that his sisters wanted to hug him and once Mirabel was on the ground with Dolores coming over to her and whispered to her.

Julieta and Pepa ran to him hugging him close, which he welcome missing their hugs and Minerva was shocked to see a small cloud form above the triplets and rain started on them.

"I am Pepa's husband, Felix and she can control the weather through her emotions, while these are our children Dolores, Camilo and this is Antonio" Felix explained smiling at the triplet reunion, then smiling at his children and Minerva looked impressed before a worried look came over her face.

"That would be a hard gift to have" Minerva stated as the triplets released their hug and Pepa looked at her.

"It can be" Pepa replied still in shock and Bruno rubbed her shoulders before looking to Minerva and giving a sigh.

"And I can see the future" Bruno stated calmly as Mirabel hugged her father and Minerva raised an eyebrow at Bruno's gift.

"How may I ask, do you see the future?" Minerva asked with a bit of a scoff which got Dolores to give a slight glare and Bruno tilted his head.

"I just can see the future, I can record it on an emerald glass plate... but I have not used my gift in 6 years... I saw something that involved my daughter and due to how many see me, I knew I had to go away" Bruno explained softly and Minerva saw the family but one looked surprise which caused Pepa to gasp in shock and glance towards Dolores.

"Dolores... you knew he was here" Pepa whispered seeing her daughter's face and Bruno looked at his sister.

"Pepa, please don't be angry at her.. be angry at me for asking her to keep it to herself" Bruno stated as Mirabel looked at her father with shock and then to Dolores with tears forming in her eyes.

Then before anyone could stop her, Mirabel ran up the stairs and Bruno looked to his family.

"Go Bruno... you best tell her everything" Julieta stated and Bruno nodded as she followed his daughter up the stairs.

"She hates me for keeping her father's secret" Dolores whispered and Isabela ran over to hug her prima.

"Give her time, Dolores" Felix told his daughter, who looked up the stairs with a sad look and Julieta looked around the room.

"Would anyone like a cup of tea, while we wait for Bruno and Mirabel to return?" Julieta asked and everyone nodded.

"Just a black tea, please" Minerva told Julieta who nodded and left the room.
