Chapter 11
A flash of lightning and a crack of thunder shook around them. The canvas of the sails was stretched and taut. The ship rocked into a swell, climbing up the other side. The crew were well-practiced sailors, but it still took everything that they knew to keep the ship floating in the water and not go under the large swells of water that were from the storm.
Rose closed her eyes as the ship rocked again into another swell. She gripped onto the rope keeping herself balanced on her shaky feet.
Jack stood at the helm steering the ship expertly as he had done countless times.
Will look forward to where Jack faced the storm head-on. He couldn't understand why he would risk the crew like this to go into a wild storm such as this.
Jack looked down at his compass and nodded.
"How can we sail to an island that nobody can find with a compass that doesn't work?" Will questioned raising his voice so Gibbs could hear him.
Rose shook her head lightly as she gripped a rope to keep herself balanced. She refused to have herself go overboard and into the rough waters. She knew if anyone went overboard there would be no way to get them back on board safely.
"Aye, the compass doesn't point north. But we're not trying to find north, are we?" Gibbs nodded his head moving away. Gibbs climbed the tilted deck towards Jack. "We should drop canvas, sir!"
"She can hold a bit longer." Jack hollered out, his face rather crazed looking knowing that they were getting closer to where the Pearl was.
Rose swallowed the lump in her throat as the wind began to howl even more. She lowered her head hoping that the howling was going to calm down at some point, but she knew that it was impossible. But with the way that Jack was acting. It concerned her why Jack was acting this way. It was like he was crazed on finding the Pearl that had her sister for another reason completely.
Jack smirked knowing that they were gaining and gaining fast to the Pearl. He could not wait to put his plan into motion. He could only hope that Will wouldn't do something stupid.
"What's in your head as puts you in such a fine mood, Captain?" Gibbs questioned moving forward to hear Jack better over the howling wind.
"We're catching up!" Jack looked back to the sea liking the fact that they were well on their way.
"How are we catching up in a storm like this?" Rose shouted over the howling winds. Her hands gripped and tightened onto the rope that she held onto.

The ship slipped through the sound-deadening fog. The crew onboard became watchful and tense.
A shape emerged from the fog, huge, reaching and it was the wreckage of a ship dashed on the reef, one of many, in a graveyard of ships that never returned from the Isla de Muerta.
"Dead men tell NO tales!" Cotton's Parrot called out.
Rose shivered a little, wrapping her arms around herself and swallowing the lump in her throat as she looked out into the thick patching fog.
"Puts in a chill in the bones, how many honest sailors have been claimed by this passage," Gibbs explained looking out.
Will nodded his head in agreement.
Rose gasped softly hearing a low scraping sound. She closed her eyes as she gripped the rope that she was near, her knuckles turning white in fear. Her heart pounded in her chest as they continued on their way. She honestly wanted to get off of the ship and onto dry land.
Gibbs and Will turned to look speculatively at Jack.
"How is it that Jack came by that compass?" Will questioned softly.
"Not a lot's known about Jack Sparrow 'fore he showed up in Tortuga with a mind to go after the treasure of Isla de Muerta. That was before I'd met him, back when he was captain of the Black Pearl."
"What?" Will looked back suspiciously back towards Jack. "He failed to mention that."
"He failed to mention a lot of things, Will," Rose said as she shakily came over to them. "More so he should've told us more than what he did. You can't trust a pirate Will, they'll backstab you in more ways than one." She shook her head softly knowing that was very true.
Gibb's eyes went wide realizing that he had made a mistake. He took a swig from his flask. "Well, he plays things close to the vest now. And a hard-learned lesson it was. See three days out on the venture the first mate comes to him and says everything's an equal share – that should mean the location of the treasure, too. So, Jack gives up the bearings." Gibbs shook his head. "That night, there was mutiny." His voice lowered causing Rose and Will to move closer to hear the old man. "They marooned Jack on an island and left him to die. But not before he'd gone mad with the heat."
"Ahh. So that's the reason for all the …" Will imitated Jack only to get elbowed by Rose, which caused him to stop.
"Reason's got nothing to do with it. Now, Will, when a pirate's marooned, he's given a pistol with a single shot. One shot, well that won't do much good hunting, or to be rescued. But after three weeks of a starving belly and thirst - that pistol start to look real friendly." Gibbs mimed helpfully with a gun to the head and pulled the trigger.
Rose let out a breath shaking her head lightly. She hated the fact that Jack lied about what his true intentions were. She didn't think it was fair that they were trusting him and finding out more about him through Gibbs who seemed to know more than what he let on.
"But Jack - he escaped the island. And he still has that single shot. Oh, but he won't use it, though, save on one man. His mutinous first mate -"
"Barbossa." Rose and Will said at the same time.
"Aye."
"How did Jack get off the island?" Will questioned his brows, raising in confusion. There was no way that he could get off the island without some sort of help.
"Well, I'll tell ya. He waded out into the shallows and he waited there, three days and three nights, 'til all manner of sea creatures 'came acclimated to his presence. Then on the fourth morning, he roped himself a couple of sea turtles, lashed 'em together, and made a raft."
Will couldn't believe what he had said. He peered over at Gibbs and Gibbs held his gaze steady. "He roped a couple of sea turtles."
"Aye. Sea turtles."
Will blinked a few times not quite believing it. There were so many problems with that story.
"What did he use for rope?" Rose questioned softly, her brows furrowed in confusion. She didn't believe the story either. There was no way that he could've roped turtles together when there was no rope on the island most likely.
Gibb went to answer but then realized quickly that he had learned his brows furrowed together in thought trying to figure out how Jack would have gotten off of the island.
"Human hair. From my back." Jack said, answering what had happened.
Will and Rose saw that Jack's gaze didn't wane and let out a soft breath.
Jack looked over at the crew. "Let go of the anchor!"
"Let go of the anchor, Aye!" Gibbs hollered out ordering the crew.
"Young Mr. Turner and I are to go ashore," Jack told Gibbs.
"I'm going with I'm not letting you two go alone to save my sister," Rose said crossing her arms her eyes narrowed. She wasn't about to let Will out of her sight. She didn't trust Jack with Will. She had no idea of what Jack was even planning for Will now knowing that his father was a pirate.
Jack looked at Rose with his brows raised. "Aye, and Miss Swann will be going ashore as well."
Gibbs stepped close to Jack, unaware that the two of them were listening. "Cap'n! What if the worst should happen?"
"Keep to the Code."
"Aye, the code."
Will and Rose watched Jack speculatively as they walked away from the two of them.
Rose blinked a few times, her brows furrowing in concern. "Are you sure that you want to trust Jack Will?" She asked softly, looking over at the younger man.
Will took a breath through his teeth unsure of what he needed to do. "I know you don't trust Jack…"
"With good reason." She pointed out looking at him. "You should feel the same way." She let out a soft breath. "Doesn't it worry you that he only accepted to help you when he found out your name? And that he has an idea in his head of what he's planning on doing next?"
Will let out the breath that he held in his lungs knowing that Rose had every right to tell him how she felt. He didn't blame her for not trusting Jack. He knew deep in his heart he knew that he didn't fully trust Jack either.
