The scouts were in a tent with tons of chairs lined up in rows; this was where Kayaba was going to explain his plan to them. After training they were directed there by Captain Serlut. They all sat down, the first four seats to the right were reserved for the newly formed S.O.S squad.
"Ahem," Clearing his throat. Sortillina joined Akihiko up front and she was going to help him with showing the map.
"I will explain the plan, next expedition we will exit from Karanes district since the exit is blocked permanently…" He took a deep breath "..we will be in titan territory for a month our goal is to build a base…" murmuring could be heard amongst the soldiers. Kazuto raised his hand and was prompted to speak.
"How are we going to build a base?"
"I was about to tell you that, an old friend of mine owns a construction company and is willing to help, his company will be with me when we separate."
"What if the titans come?" a soldier shouted out.
"Simple, we defend them."
Tsuboi decided to speak up, "With all due respect commander we will be in uncharted and dangerous territory, say a horde shows up then what?" "Not like we can carry all the workers and put them on a tree that fast." Kayaba listened to his critique intently. He looked at the boy with blonde hair and blue eyes.
"We have an ace in the hole, Eugeo Nakamo. He will not be allowed to transform UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY." he made sure to emphasize the last few words.
"Such as?"
"A horde appears." he shot back
"Oh." Tsuboi felt dumb.
He explained the rest and went more deeply in the strategy. Eugeo wasn't allowed to transform unless needed. The newly formed S.O.S squad would be in the middle as the last line of defense. The majority of the soldiers would defend both of the entrances supervised by Lieutenant Corvatz.
After the meeting Kazuto left intending to go do solo training. Until he heard a voice.
"Yo Kazuto,"
"Yes, S-"
"Call me Tsuboi or Klein."
"..uuboy."
"Anyways want to go drinking?"
"Nah I'm good." he went in the opposite direction to do his individual training.
The three members were at trish's bar.
"Hey, Eugeo, does Kazuto not like me or something..?"
"Why would you say that…?"
"I wanted him to join us." Tsuboi was planning to have all four members of the newly formed S.O.S come here at the bar. He wanted the squad to bond and have a fun time together.
"Well he does Individual training at this time.."
"Wow." Eji cut in.
"Maybe next time.." Tsuboi sighed.
Kazuto was in the air practicing on titan dummies. Need to be faster. He tried to switch gears and immediately lost control and fell hard on the ground. "Fuck." he whispered to himself. He noticed someone else watching.
"Who's there?"
"Oh you saw me."
"Commander, why are you here?" he stood up facing and making eye contact with him.
"Why can't I watch my best soldier?"
He just looked at him, "Koichiro would've been better suited for this than me."
"Why is it because he's more likable?"
Kazuto didn't answer. Sure Koichiro is a good soldier but he isn't as good as you.
"I decided to keep him among the regulars. He can be a useful asset there."
"Sure, but I am weak. After all-" he realized what he was about to say and just squatted on his knees in despair.
"Cut the crap Kirigaya, if you were really weak why did you choose to join the scouts especially after what you witnessed that day."
He had no words to say.
"It's all my fault, If I was there I could have helped but no my ignorant ass wanted to go home to my wife..maybe I could've saved him…" he looked up at the sky.
So Kayaba has regrets? He looked at him with confusion.
"Don't look at me like that just because I'm a Commander doesn't mean I have no emotions."
He chuckled at him. Kayaba also laughed alongside him. "So who was this friend of yours..? You don't have to tell me…"
"He reminds me of you."
"How?"
"Let's just say he was a good fighter but…"
"But?"
"He quit."
"If he was so good, why did he quit?" Kazuto did not understand that.
"He had a son."
"A son, why would he quit over that?" he was a bit confused about his reasoning.
Kayaba explained to him that he had a family to support. It was not just him and his wife anymore, if he died it would effect the child as well. Now that this soldier was in charge of feeding an extra mouth, he promised his wife that if they had a child he would be a civil worker.
"Oh." I wonder if I had a child… nah thats stupid no one's gonna marry me…
"You know it's still sunset, you could join Tsuboi at The Dicey Cafe"
"Nah, I got to do my workout."
"A break isn't going to hurt you once in a while."
Kazuto sighed. So this was Kayaba's true purpose..? "Sure, let's go."
As he reached the edge of the forest to take off his gear and put on his all new all black trench coat with the insignia on the back and each side of the shoulders. ODM gear wasn't allowed in the city unless you were a member of the garrison or had special permission from Commander Sejirou Kikuoka himself.
"Really Alice you did that?!"
"Yeah she was pretty badass." Agil complimented her once again
Kazuto arrived at the cafe. Confused by the commotion.
"Eugeo you have one badass girlfriend."
"Eiji how did you know that?" they hadn't planned on telling anyone about their relationship.
"Bro do I Iook stupid to you..?" Eiji gave him a look. "She literally kissed you in the middle of the district."
The now exposed couple looked the other way and blushed. Especially Alice since she was the one who initiated it.
"Zoo wee mama, that was one helluva kiss," one drunk soldier chimed in. That didn't help them calm down at all. Kazuto sat down next to Eji on the stool leaning back on the counter.
"So what did I miss?"
"The trending topic of Alice and Eugeo becoming a couple." Tsuboi told him
"Anything else?"
Hoh..so you already knew…?
Kazuto decided to introduce himself, to the gray haired man since he noticed he was wearing the same trench coat indicating that they were squad mates.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"I've never met you..since we are on the same squad I thought It would be beneficial...to get to know you..."
"So if we weren't on the same squad you wouldn't look at me…?
"..."
"..how cruel.."
Kazuto was panicking internally. He wanted to make a friend but decided to say that so he wouldn't come off as desperate. He fucked up or so he thought.
Eiji laughed "Joking…I'm an introvert as well. My name is Eiji Nochizawa and I am more of a combat medic..pretty useless right?"
"Nuh uh..you can save lives."
"What are you Kayaba's echo?" he muttered but Kazuto decided to let it go since he could not make out the words.
"And I'm Tsuboi but you can call me Klein and I am the squad leader." he cut in.
They chatted for a bit. All of them talking about their humble beginnings. Kazuto felt like he found his group and laughed alongside them.
"Hey Kazuto, do you want a drink?" Trish shouted from behind.
"Sure I'll have a…"
"Yo my girl Alice kicked the colossal titans ass!" a half drunk Fanatio exclaimed loudly.
"Oh stop it Fanatio…"
Kazuto was interested in this conversation and listened intently while sipping his iced tea.
"Now this I wanna hear.." Eugeo wanted to know how much of a badass Alice was.
Fanatio described the incident with the help of Andrew from memory. For some reason itsuki was sulking during the explanation. Kazuto noticed and walked up to their table.
"What's got Itsuki upset?"
Koichiro was hitting the table and laughing. "He's just mad he wasn't the one doing the ass kicking."
Itsuki grumbled.
"Don't worry itsuki you'll get your chance sooner or later."
"Yeah thanks, Kazuto."
"Besides, going up against the colossal titan is not the only way to gain recognition."
"Mhm…"
Kazuto went home early because he did not feel well and wanted to sleep. He entered his house.
"Hello, Kazu," Noriko was there talking to his aunt since they had been good friends since childhood.
"Hello Noriko and Auntie."
"We are making dinner-"
"I'm going to bed early," he said as he put his trench coat on the coat rack. He went up to his room and changed into sweatpants. He put his uniform in the closet and went under the covers. Downstairs Sugha noticed a black trench coat.
"Mom, whose coat is this?"
"Oh that's Kazuto's new uniform coat."
"I thought the uniforms were orangish?" She made a confused face while saying this. She noticed the gold insignia which she thought was beautiful.
"Kayaba thought he was special and put him in a squad."
So you're special wherever you go Kirito? If she said that outloud there would be a hint of venom. Sugha didn't know what to say so she shrugged it off. "Mmm ok."
"So how was Kendo?"
"Good."
"Where is Kirito?"
"He went to bed early."
"What's for dinner?"
"I made rice and beans."
"Can't we have meat..?" she made a pouting face, tired of eating beans and carbs everyday.
"You know we can't afford it," ever since Wall Maria was breached the meat prices were raised because there was a shortage and it was considered a delicacy unless you were of Nobility. Many people lost their farms after retreating behind Wall Rose. Hopefully the scouts can retake Wall Maria before a food shortage occurs.
"Fine," she reluctantly accepted the food that was served.
Kazuto was running in the fields with his squad, chilling just after training.
Ducker and Testuo were messing with each other using a knife and doing weird fighting stances and making weird noises. Keita was laughing with his mouth full of bread. Meanwhile Kazuto and Sachi were watching the sunset on top of some stacked boxes. Enjoying their time together.
"You think we can wipe them out, Kirito?"
"If we work together, yep."
"I hope our kids don't ever find out what a titan is," before she realized what she was saying, her face was a tomato as she turned towards her lover.
He was staring up nonchalantly, pretending that he didn't hear her. If he was making eye contact he'd probably just be as red as her. "Mhm…"
"Hey Sachi, you think you want kids when we get older?"
"Maybe…BUT YOU LET ME DIE!"
He fell off the box after the sky turned red and his squadmates were zombified. His zombified squadmates surrounded him as they bombarded him with questions.
"Why…"
"I miss my mother, she's sad because of you."
"I am sorry!" he scooted back while being surrounded by his former comrades.
He woke up in a cold sweat huffing and puffing. Holding his forehead and sighed Fucking nightmares. Just then, the door opened revealing his aunt.
"Kazu, I made breakfast and you have to go soon…" She said avoiding eye contact with him. She went downstairs.
At Least close the door.
He looked for his uniform but could not find it. Kazuto started panicking.
"Where's my uniform!?"
"Oh I washed it and put it out to dry last night," Midori yelled back since she was downstairs.
Eugeo woke up yawning. He tried to move his arm but he could not due to a certain someone using his arm as a pillow. Carefully moving his arm. He sat on his bed and let's just say they went to bed late. He blushed thinking about last night's events. He was careful because sex before marrige was looked down on so they both agreed to avoid that until marrige. Swearing he would marry her until the threat of titans were gone. So that their kids can grow in times of peace.
Kazuto was now at the barracks using their shower. Just enjoying the warm water.
"Yo Kazuto you ready," he shouted at the stall next to him.
"Born ready, Eugeo."
Kazuto was on his horse. Just before the bell rang Midori came to him with a pack of food.
"Don't do anything reckless, ok?"
"ATTENTION THE 58TH EXPEDITION IS NOW UNDERWAY!" Akihiko shouted as the bell rang. "FORWARD MY SOLDIERS!"
And off they went there were no titans but just in case there were a few garrison escorts. As they headed further into the unknown Kayaba gave the signal. Kazuto then separated from his squad with Eugeo.
"Don't die boys."
"Trying not to Klein."
And they separated from each other. There was nothing you could hear besides the galloping of the horses. They spotted a titan but were ordered not to engage them. Their purpose was to tell the others the location of the titans. The Commander would then fire a green flare in the direction that was deemed safe by him and the rest of the formation would follow through. They would repeat this process until they have reached their destination.
Kazuto was itching to get some action but remembered what Kayaba told him at the strategy meeting. "This isn't going to be the walls where you can refill ODM anytime. You have a limited amount of supplies and it's basically your life." Plus he had no experience fighting outside the walls so he decided he wouldn't be reckless unless absolutely needed.
They arrived at the forest of giant trees. Eugeo and Eiji were ordered to standby on the trees. While the rest of them cleared the forest of titans. The cart holding the construction workers and supplies was being protected by the command group.
Koichiro killed many titans alongside Diaval and Lind. They were steadily clearing the forest at a steady pace. In the distance they saw a bunch of titans fall like dominoes before a black spec. It was Kazuto who would first amputate the arm and then orbit to the nape and go for the kill.
The forest was now clear of titans and the construction workers now got to work on the foundation of the base. Surprisingly there weren't many titans; the exterior was well defended as only a few titans came near but were swiftly dealt with. Five days in, things were going smoothly.
Back in Trost, Midori was washing dishes just after lunch. She was thinking about Kazuto and would never forgive herself if something happened to him. What made her change her mind about him enlisting in the military? Just then she heard a knock and answered it expecting to see her friend Noriko instead saw an unfamiliar face.
"Uh hello can I help you..?"
"Hi…" not knowing what to say. "...My name Rosalia, is Kazuto here? I'm a friend."
"Oh uh he's at…work right now."
"Oh we talk sometimes and he said this is where I could reach him…sorry to disturb you."
Midori chuckled "Don't worry my daughter isn't home yet and you weren't really disturbing anything, come on in." She wanted to get to know this friend better.
Two minutes in the conversation and she did not have a great impression. Midori got the impression that she liked Kazuto but did not ask her.
"Thank you for having me again, sorry for disturbing you."
"You weren't."
They smiled as she saw her off to the door. Midori went back to work Sugha came home late again due to Kendo practice.
Sugha came home after school.
"Still no Kirito mom?"
"No, He'd said a month. It's only been two weeks." Midori sighed
She'd been so mean to him. Why was she feeling down? As she recalled a time with her brother.
"So Sugha wanna know what the insignia's mean?"
She nodded.
"Freedom, It's meant to represent a bird." He smiled.
"But why is yours gold and white unlike others?"
"I don't know, I asked Kayaba about it…but he didn't give me a straight answer."
Midori was peeking around the corner, smiling at them.
She sighed heavily. What was he doing now?
As Kazuto and Eugeo were playing a game of cards.
"Ah damn I keep losing."
"Haha."
"Curse you and your poker face Kazuto."
Suddenly a black flare was fired. They noticed this and were on guard. Immediately after multiple purple flares were followed. He stood up and took out his swords.
"Eugeo stay here."
"What's happening?" a construction worker asked but was ignored.
Kazuto was now airborne, soon joined by Klein.
"Don't do anything reckless, Kazuto trust in your comrades."
He just nodded and simply boosted forward, ignoring his words. Koichiro was at the front patrolling at the front checking the perimeter as ordered. Diavel looked through his telescope spotting a horde led by a…female titan?
"WHAT THE..?!" Gathering the attention of his peers and immediately firing a black flare. "ALL HANDS ON DECK A HORDE IS EN ROUTE, DO NOT LET THEM GET PAST US!" As they clashed only a few were killed leaving only a few survivors they immediately fired purple flares.
Diavel, Lind, Koichiro and Corvatz barely got away from the massacre. Suddenly two titans who were giving chase flopped as a result of being killed by Kazuto and Klein.
"Tsuboi, Kazu, get out of there you won't survive!" exclaimed Koichiro
"I'm going back to the site to inform the others of the situation, Kazuto work your magic."
"Don't have to tell me twice."
Klein never felt more scared in his life than now. Sure he's encountered hordes but that was near the walls when they had artillery support. He landed at the site sweating.
"Klein you good?" Eiji had never seen him with such a scared look.
"EVERYBODY TAKE SHELTER THERE'S A HORDE!"
Suddenly everyone was screaming. A worker panicked and ran to a tree and attempted to climb it.
"PLEASE I DON'T WANT TO DIE!"
"OY GET BACK HERE!" Exclaimed Eugeo. He was too late as a crawler jumped the worker and ate him.
"Holy shit…"
As soon as Klein left. Kazuto got down to business, holding his left blade backwards. He immediately got to shredding. Koichiro and Diavel did what they could do to help. He was in pursuit of a crawler. It was so fast that he had to really use the gas trigger to boost but he was too late as it slurped up a construction worker. Immediately killing it afterwards. Fuck. He noticed Eugeo standing there and ran to him.
"Eugeo get inside now!"
"But I can hel-"
"No get inside, you're too valuable to lose besides your transformation will probably attract even more titans. Best bet is to stay inside with the construction workers." Kayaba cut in.
Eugeo was frustrated but had to follow his commanders orders "Fine." He growled angrily and ran inside.
"Kirigaya you got this right?"
"Yes, Commander." As he went airborne to help the others.
Kayabe attached to a tree branch and standing on it was Liena.
"Liena, situation report."
"We are surrounded. Advised to surrender." As she put the telescope in her jacket pocket.
Kayaba clenched his fists. Well fuck.
Koichiro was watching in awe at Kazuto's speed and reaction mainly because he was always on gear two. He was covered in blood as he just kept slicing and dicing away. Suddenly the female titan passed through. He immediately gave chase, throwing his blades at it in order to get its attention but it failed. He noticed an abnormal about to jump at him so he dodged it by orbiting a tree and subduing it but he lost the female titan.
Eugeo was anxious there was a horde outside but was ordered to be on standby. What was Kayaba thinking? How many people had to die? Suddenly Klein came in and ordered the workers in the cart outside. As they were running to the exit they had a little chat.
"KLEIN LET ME TRANSFORM I CAN USE MY POWER AND PROTECT EVERYONE!"
"No, not yet."
"THEN TELL ME WHEN IS THE FUCKING RIGHT TIME? WHEN EVERYONES DEAD? COME ON MAN YOU AND I BOTH KNOW WE'D HAVE A BETTER CHANCE IF I USED MY POWER HERE AND NOW." He yelled frustratingly.
"EUGEO THINK FOR A SECOND WE ARE SURROUNDED BY TITANS IF YOU GET EATEN OUR WHOLE PLAN IS FOILED. KAZUTO, KOICHIRO LIND, DIAVEL AND THE REST ARE DOING THEIR BEST RIGHT NOW HOLDING BACK THE ENEMY SO TRUST IN THEM. IF YOU TRANSFORM RIGHT NOW IT WILL ALL BE FOR NAUGHT."
"FINE!"
They made it outside and went and some workers were picked off by titans. Eugeo brought his hand up and was about to bite it but was interrupted.
"KEEP GOING EUGEO!" It was Kazuto. Even though he was bathed in blood he was smiling. Killing them left and right. He looked forward and sped up and got on his horse. The female titan and her horde demolished the two weeks of work that was done on the base.
"YOU BITCH! LISTEN TO ME I'M RIGHT HERE." Kazuto yelled angrily at the female titan but was ignored.
The female titan killed many soldiers whilst protecting her nape. Running fast as she could only having one target.
"SHIT THAT TITAN IS ON OUR ASS!" Klein exclaimed
Akihiko and Liena got off their horses and managed to slow it down by slicing the ankles and mounted their horses and retreated back on their horses. Somehow they caught up with Eugeo's group.
Eugeo looked back and saw a soldier in the air looking behind her. They could hear footsteps THUMP, THUMP. He looked forward and sighed.
"Permission to transform, Commander?"
"Why are you asking me?"
"Well becaus-"
"Because I'm the highest rank, because I am the commander?"
"..."
"Even I don't know the right answer. I have years of fighting these monsters yet I still don't know what I'm doing. So it's up to you to decide, to run or fight?"
"I don't know."
"Let me rephrase that. Which choice would leave you with the least amount of regrets?"
That's when Eugeo knew what he was going to do. The female titan swatted the female scout like she was a bug. He went airborne and went towards it.
"EU-"
"Let him be, Sortliena."
"But Kayaba, he's important."
"He's the only one who can stop whatever the fuck that is."
Suddenly a lighting bolt appeared and humanities titan appeard.
"RAAAAAAAAAAR" As he landed he managed to get a clean punch on her.
I'll kill you. He looked around the forest and saw many corpses and blood splattered everywhere which enraged him even more. Your going to die here you fuck.
Going in for a punch but she attempted to block him with her arm but his force was much greater and managed to break her guard. There is my opening!
He punched with his other arm and managed to get her to topple over. He immediately got on top of her enraged and started punching her. After his fists were bloodied he stopped punching to let it heal. That's when he realized he was hitting the ground and not her face. He saw this and was shocked. Well fuck.
She smiled. My turn to counter… She squeezed her legs around his torso and managed to squeeze his head off between her thighs. She easily slid out from under and put both her hands on his shoulders and took him with her mouth.
Kazuto had killed the abnormal but lost the female titan. He was about to take off when suddenly Kochiro stopped him.
"KAZU, DIAVEL NEEDS HELP! AND I CAN'T REACH HIM!"
FUCK! He went in the direction of Diavel who was being chased by a titan. He was fleeing from under it. Kazuto noticed his leg was bleeding. He quickly attached to the titans' nape, killing it with a horizontal slash. He landed and ran up to him.
"DIAVEL ARE YOU OK?!" Putting both of his hands on his shoulders
"Jeez dude I'm not deaf. Just my leg hurts."
"My bad." he took a deep breath and took his hands off. Suddenly Diavel had a fearful look on his face and whimpered. Kazuto wondered why and saw a titan behind him. The titan fell as Koichiro killed it.
"Are you guys good?" He said as he walked up to them.
Kazuto looked around one… two… three… shit. He counted six titans.
"Kazuto…Koichiro...leave me and run."
"No Koichiro stay with him."
"Bu-"
"STAY WITH HIM!" Koichiro couldn't move for some reason as Kazuto took off and swiftly killed the first two titans.
Koichiro and Diavel were running to the horse with the cart attached to it. Kazuto spun around a titan and killed his third titan. He noticed a crawler approaching them. FUCK! He went up a gear and boosted towards the crawler but first he elevated making because the crawler's nape was a little harder to slice due to its positioning. Once he got in position he boosted downwards and sliced the nape. Then he turned back after he helped them on the horse. He easily killed the fifth titan by attaching his right hook to his neck and strafed quickly behind him. As soon as he was behind him he retracted his hook and slashed the nape.
He quickly went airborne again looking for the last titan but it was nowhere to be seen as he looked behind him. He looked forward and saw a jumper coming at him. Everything at that moment slowed down. What should I do? An idea popped in his head since he was already flying towards his mouth he boosted and adjusted his swords in a slashing motion and went in the mouth and came out of the nape side. Soaked in blood and saliva. Suddenly lightning flashed and a roaring sound was heard.
Eugeo… He jumped up and flew hoping nothing bad happened to his best friend.
He finally caught up to the scene but just saw Eugeo's decomposing titan body. Looking forward he saw the female titan running up ahead. "YO TITS MCGEE COME BACK HERE!" He yelled as he flew towards her. As he was chasing behind her barely managing to keep up with her. He had a bad feeling so he held his left blade backwards just in case something happened. She swiftly turned around hoping to punch him but he spun like a beyblade resulting in the amputation of her arm.
GIVE ME BACK MY FRIEND! He slashed her ankles in a swift manner and stabbed her eyes with both of his swords. Noticing two legs under him he quickly slashed both jaw bones and pulled him out. While flying away he noticed her giving up and leaning against the tree. What was even more odd is that it shed a tear. Finally landing on the cart and leaving the lush green forestry.
"Better?"
"Yeah thanks Eiji.."
Eji had patched up everyone's wound to the best he could.
"FUCK!" Koichiro screamed
He pointed to the horde who was following behind. Kazuto was about to go when he was pulled back down by Eiji.
"Kazuto don't we are almost at the wall let the cannons do it."
"Right." he sat back down.
Alice was sitting dangling her legs on the wall thinking of a certain someone. She looked like a young girl who just discovered what love was. Alice couldn't help but worry about them, especially him.
Agil was gulping down some alcohol in his flask.
"Day shifts almost over." He was relieved he wanted to go home to his wife. It was a serene sunset. The sky was beautiful, a streak of yellow was glistening across the horizon. The commander decided to accompany them on the wall since he had free time. A soldier was rushing from the lift.
"Commander there seems to be a horde of titans by Karanes district."
"Deal with it yourselves, you guys are highly trained soldiers."
"But…"
"But what? Spit it out." Sejirou rarely gets irritated
"The scouts have returned!"
"Oh."
Alice perked up at this and was about to ask the commander to accompany him. Agil stopped her saying that they have enough personnel over there and to trust in them. She agreed eventually.
There was knocking on the door.
Knock knock knock
"Coming! One moment I just have to wash the last dish." This was harder on Midori because she had one arm. Usually Kazuto or Sugha would help her but they were both busy.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
She decided to put the dish in the sink and ran to the door and opened it.
"Can't you see I'm bu-" She turned her head.
"Noriko?"
"Midori, what did I say about housework?"
She looked away guilty "To uh call…you?"
"Yeah I'll reprimand you later. The scouts are coming back!"
"What?" Kazuto wasn't supposed to be back for another three weeks. At least that's what he said.
"I heard some civs and soldiers mutter about it."
She quickly put on her sweater with Noriko's help and left a note on the table. "Let's go." They both headed Karanes hoping to intercept the scouts.
"WE ARE ALMOST THERE DO NOT ENGAGE! UNLESS YOU WANNA DIE!" shouted Liena.
If it was up to the Lieutenant he would've probably charged. If not for the captain's order. Volleys of grapeshots were then fired. They managed to slow down the horde but weren't accurate enough for a precise shot as they were 40 meters out from the wall.
They finally made it to the town outside but there was another problem… The wall cannons were jammed.
