Possession
A spooky quirk for the spookiest month of the year!
A recently orphaned four-year-old Izuku sat on his bed in the orphanage. The boy had been moved here that very morning after the hospital had given him a clean bill of health. The room had 4 bunk beds inside along with 4 large wardrobes. A single window illuminates the room with the light of the setting sun.
Izuku stares out motionlessly toward the setting sun. His was red, covered in drying tears and snot. An empty cup of water and half-eaten dinner on a plate rested on the floor. Everyone else was eating downstairs but it was only a matter of time before his new roommates came upstairs.
"I miss you, Mummy. Why did you have to go? I need you. It's not fair." He murmured.
"Oh Izuku, Honey. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to leave you all alone." A familiar voice apologized mournfully. Startling the young boy.
His head snapped towards the sound of the voice and he went slack-jawed, at the sight of a ghostly apparition that was none other than his mother. The very woman who had died in a villain attack the day before.
"Mum!?" Izuku exclaimed in shock believing that he would never see her again.
"Izuku! You can see me!?" Inko exclaimed in shock. Much like her son, she had red-rimmed eyes and dried tears.
Without a moment's thought, Izuku leaped at the apparition with open arms and fresh tears in his eyes. Inko responded in kind. Neither of them was prepared for Inko's ghostly form to be sucked inside Izuku. Izuku looked around shocked and confused as to where his mother could have gone. "Mum?" He calls out.
"I'm here Sweety! I can see through your eyes!" Inko's voice echoed from inside his head.
"What's going on?" A bewildered Izuku thought to himself.
"Isn't it obvious Honey? It's your quirk. That's the only possible explanation." Inko giggled from inside his head.

It took a lot of work to convince people Izuku was not insane, and his quirk did actually let him see dead people who have not passed on. Most people saw Izuku's quirk as a novelty. Intriguing but ultimately useless. That was how both One for All and the hero commission viewed the quirk, deeming it to have far too big of a drawback to be of any use. And so Izuku was mostly left alone besides orphans and the odd widower wishing to speak to a loved one they lost. A request Izuku regrettably couldn't always grant.
As Izuku grew older he came to realize that it was rare that he actually found lost souls, but when he was 12 he met one who would help him find his purpose in life beyond wishing to be a hero. As he walked to the local shop he saw a very angry lost soul following an ordinary looking man. "You think you will get away with your fucked up shit!? They're hot on your tail motherfucker! And when they catch you, your bitch ass won't last 5 minutes in jail! AND THEN I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL!" The male roared, he had the head of a crocodile and green scales over his skin and was wearing navy blue overalls and black work boots. But the most shocking thing was that Izuku recognized him. He had seen his face on the news that very morning. He had been murdered. Which means the person he was following was his killer!
Izuku felt his heart sink to his stomach, as his skin paled and he trembled in fear. He was standing behind a murderer. Someone had killed a person by stabbing them 8 times. Izuku snatched up the soul and ran.
"Hey! What the-!? What's going on!?" The spirit questioned the baffled soul. Too confused to even try and escape.
"I'm sorry! I just reacted!" Izuku apologized as he continued to run.
"How did you even see me?" The spirit questioned.
"It's my quirk. I can see dead people who haven't moved on." Izuku answered as he finally stopped running. Looking at his reflection in a shop window. His eyes were now yellow and reptilian in shape. His skin was now covered in green scales and his teeth were now sharp. There was always a dull pain when he took on a mutation quirk but the adrenalin had diluted the pain so much that he had hardly felt it.
"Well shit. That's pretty dope." The spirit replied. "Hey kid, can you do me a solid?"
"What is it?" Izuku questioned.
Soon.
Izuku soon arrived at the police station, texting his adoptive parents where he was going on the way there. Arriving at the front desk he was met by a male officer behind some reinforced glass. "Hi." The officer greeted.
"I know who killed Sato Rui." Izuku claimed firmly.
The officer looked stunned before he spoke. "Please take a seat, someone will come to talk to you soon. What is your name?"
"Midoriya Izuku." Izuku answered and sat down until a detective and one of his guardians arrived, from there they entered an interrogation room.
The detective explained how the questioning would work to Izuku and his guardian before they began. Izuku cleared up some questions about his quirk and proceeded to give his side of the story before allowing Rui to use his voice to do the same.
Once the detective got everything he needed he closed his notebook and spoke. "Okay, that's everything. We have more than enough evidence to issue an arrest warrant, search his home, and with your statements, plus whatever else we find, they will be luck to ever see the light of day again."
The next day they arrested the murderer. A couple of months later the trial was held and he was found guilty on all accounts and sentenced to spend the next 70 years in Tartarus for 3 accounts of murder, being a member of an illegal organization (Creature Rejection Clan), and for evidence found at his home suggest plans to murder others in the future.
Izuku had been sat at the back of the courtroom along with his guardians while hosting Rui. Once the killer had been escorted out of the courtroom something strange happened. Izuku's connection to Rui began to fade.
"Huh. I guess this is it. Thanks, kid. You really did me a solid." Rui spoke from inside his head. Seemingly accepting what was happening as his voice sounded further and further away. And then, it was gone.
Izuku looked around to see if he could find Rui's spirit but to no avail. "Rui? Rui?" He called inside his head but no one responded. "Did he pass on?"
Once they left the courtroom the detective who had interviewed Izuku asked for a moment of their time. "I can't thank you enough for what you did. You made the entire process so much simpler just by telling us where to look." The detective thanked Izuku, filling the young boy with pride. So how does Sato feel right now?"
"I think he passed on." Izuku answered slowly.
"Makes sense I suppose." The detective responded. "You said you only see lost souls, people with unfinished business. Once that business is done they can pass on."
"Yeah, that makes sense." Izuku replied with a bright smile.
"Well. Maybe one day you can be in my shoes and can help other lost souls find their peace." The detective suggested with a smile.
Izuku's eyes seemed to light up in response. "Really!?"
"Sure!" The detective replied with a smile before all joy seemingly vanished from his face. "I won't lie to you kid. You see the worst humanity has to offer and then put it under a microscope, and sometimes the criminals are smart so you have to be smarter to catch them. But you seem like a smart kid." The detective praised. "You don't have an answer now, but I'd appreciate it if you gave it some thought." With that, the detective made his leave, and Izuku was left with much to think about.
…
Izuku stood before his mother's grave with flowers in hand. Without a word, Izuku gently placed the flowers in front of the grave before he spoke. "Hi, Mum." Once Inko knew that her son was going to be well looked after by his new foster family, Inko had been able to pass on peacefully. It had been a tearful goodbye, to say the least, but Izuku would later come to understand the importance of not trying to hold on to someone who was already gone.
Izuku stayed for the better part of an hour to talk about anything of note that had happened since his visit the previous month. The highlight was Izuku's acceptance into UA on the criminology course which would help him significantly reach his goal of becoming a detective. Thanks to his quirk Izuku had been able to help solve a few cold cases and a few recent ones as well.
After saying his goodbyes, and promising to visit again next month, Izuku stood up and began to leave the graveyard. But out of the corner of his eye, Izuku saw a lost soul looking mournfully at some graves. Izuku's curiosity and desire to help drove him to approach the spirit and the graves.
The spirit was a woman. She was well-built, with sleek black hair, ad wearing some kind of hero costume. Upon looking at the graves, Izuku saw they all had the same last name. Shimura.
Izuku stops next to the spirit, who has yet to notice him and speaks. "Hello, I am Izuku Mydoria and I want to help."
A week later.
The number 1 hero of japan, All Might was sitting at home on his laptop, preparing for his upcoming job as a teacher at U.A. when his phone began to ring. Looking to see that the call was Detective Naomasa, All Might quickly answered.
"What do you need, Naomasa?" The top pro asked. Ready to jump into the fray.
"I thought you would like to know, that the Shimura case, has been solved." Naomasa answered with a heavy tone.
The sheer shock caused All might to bolt up from his seat and cough up blood. "What!? How!?" The mystery of what happened to the Shimura family had gone unsolved for years! How had it been solved now!? What had come up!?
"Toshi. It's- it's best if you come down to the station to get all of the details." Was the detective's only response. The dreed that continued to lace his tone only furthered the deep unsettling feeling in the hero's stomach.
"I'm on my way." Was his only response.
Soon.
All Might and his former mentor Grand Torino sat beside each other in utter shock and disbelief at what they had just heard. To think that the son of the kindest and companionate woman they knew would be so bitter and cruel to his own children. To think he would abuse them at any showing of wanting to be a hero. To think that the youngest child would awaken such a destructive quirk and kill the rest of his family. To think, that the last time the child had been seen, was in the clutches of All-For-One.
It was a dark and harrowing story to say the least.
"I can't believe this." Torino said as he shook hi head. "This can't be right. How did you even come to think this!?"
"A few years ago, a kid solved a case by bringing the ghost of the murder victim to us thanks to his quirk. Ever since he has been solving cases with his quirk by finding the spirits of those who hadn't passed on. A week ago, he had found the spirit of Nana Shimura." Tsukauchi answered.
"This is absurd!" Torino bellowed.
"I know how it sounds, but he is telling the truth, and knew things that he should never know, including One-For-All, and All-For-One." Tsukauchi answered.
"Who is this kid?" All might asked. "I would like to meet him."
"I'll see what I can do." The detective replied.
A few days later.
Izuku was confused as to why he had been asked to come to the local police station but complied nonetheless. Nana Shimura was still with him and had let him play with her quirk a few times. Upon entering he was lead to a sitting room and asked to wait. Only to get the shock of his life as none other than All Might walked in.
"All Might!" Izuku gasped with a cheer.
"Ah, a young fan I see!" All Might replied boisterously.
"Of course! You're the coolest hero ever!" Izuku replied with equal volume and vigor.
A clearing of the throat causes Izuku to snap back to reality and he looks over to Nana's ghostly figure. "I think Toshi wants to speak to me. Would mind letting me borrow your body for a couple of minutes?" She asked.
"Not at all." Izuku agreed, confusing All Might until he turned and elaborated. "Nana's gonna use my body to talk to you for a while." He explained.
All Might watched in awe as Izuku's eyes changed blue, and his body posture changed. "Hello, Toshi." He says with a mellow smile.
Sorry, it's so short and a little late, but this was a hard one to write for.
