"Gonna need ya to come out here and talk some sense into this girl," Daryl said from where he crouched at the opening of the tent.
Putting down the crayon she held, Charlotte left Annabelle coloring on her sleeping bag and moved to the opening, "What's going on? All I hear is yelling."
"Jim got bit," he told her quietly, glancing at the little girl coloring behind her, "He needs to be dealt with the same as that girl. The sister refuses to move and let us deal with it."
"She's grieving Daryl. She just lost her sister."
"She's a ticking time bomb," he countered, "Thought maybe you could talk some sense into her. Let us take the body."
"You think I should let Belle see her like that?"
"Ain't gonna be able to keep the ugly from her. We cleaned up most of the bodies but we keep going like this she's gonna see worse."
Knowing Daryl was probably right she sighed, "She's only three."
"Your nephew and Carol's girl are being looked after by Morales' wife. Take her down to their tent," he suggested.
"Carl, Sophia, and Miranda," she supplied, with a smile
"Whatever," he muttered.
Once she got Annabelle settled with Miranda and the children, Charlotte headed for the RV where Amy still lay on the ground with Andrea sitting beside her.
Clearing her throat, she asked if she could sit.
Without looking away from her sister, Andrea nodded.
"I'm very sorry, Andrea. She was a good girl."
"I wasn't always the best sister to her."
"Doesn't mean you loved her any less than she did you, and I know she loved you a ton. Nothing can change the love you feel for your sibling."
Stroking Amy's hair, Andrea sighed, "Thank you for being so kind to her. She loved you and Annabelle."
Biting her lip, Charlotte hesitated, "I'd like for Belle to be able to say goodbye. I could get some water and we could clean her up. Maybe let them take care of her so she doesn't turn. She wouldn't want to be that way."
"No."
"Andrea."
"No. I wasn't always there for my sister like I should have. I'm gonna be here now. I'll take care of her when I'm ready," she told Charlotte firmly.
"Okay, I understand that. How about I go down and get some water and bring it back here. When you're ready I'll help ya get her cleaned up. Is that okay?"
At Andrea's nod, Charlotte got to her feet.
"Where ya goin?"
"Told her we'd get Amy cleaned up," she answered Daryl, "Goin down to the quarry for some water, and then I'm gonna help her."
"Your supposed to be talkin her into us takin care of the problem," he grumbled at her, taking the bucket before she could pick it up.
"She knows what needs to happen, Daryl," she told him, as they began the walk down to the quarry, "She's prepared to take care of the problem herself."
"Think it's a mistake," he muttered.
"That may be, but it's something she needs to do to grieve," she responded, "Just like Carol beating the hell out of Ed's corpse."
"Ya saw that?"
Snorting, she rolled her eyes, "Hard to miss her taking a pickax to his face, but it's what she needed and you let her do it so we need to let Andrea do what she needs," she replied.
Clearing his throat he nodded, "Your brother come talk to you yet?"
"No. Why?"
"He's livin in a damn fantasy world too. Thinks we can get Jim help at the CDC," he told her.
"Maybe we can," she said with a shrug.
"You serious?"
"What? It's plausible they could still be up and running."
"Ya got dead people walking around, and you think this jackass of a government protected the CDC out of everything?"
Sighing, she shook her head, "Probably not, but it's a destination. There's gotta be something better than camping at an old quarry."
Walking the rest of the way down to the quarry in silence he filled the bucket with water and they headed back up to camp.
"What did ya tell Belle?" he eventually asked.
"The truth. I told her Merle wasn't where Rick left him, but we hoped and prayed he was still alive somewhere out there," she told him, "And with Amy, I told her she went to heaven with her mama. I'm not sure how much she understands."
"She's smart. Thinking she understands a whole lot more than you think," he responded.
"Probably, I never saw myself as a mother. Now to have to deal with it with all this going on," she waved her hand in the air, "Don't know how to explain it all."
"Trying to shield it all ain't gonna work. She needs to know what these things are so she can protect herself. She got damn lucky last night."
"She's only three," she reminded him again.
"Ya want her to live till four don't ya?"
"Geez, Daryl," she muttered, shaking her head, "I wouldn't," she began cutting off at the sound of a gunshot echoing through the hills, "That was her, right?" she whispered, looking at him wide eyed.
"Should probably get up there," he responded.
Hurrying the rest of the way up to the camp, Charlotte didn't stop until she was on the ground with Andrea, hugging her tight, "I'm so sorry," she whispered over and over as the blonde cried in her arms.
Once her tears dried, the two worked together to clean the blood from Amy's body. Taking an extra sheet from Carol they used it to wrap Amy's body up and then Charlotte had Daryl move her body to the back of his truck with the rest of their dead.
Rick and Shane were up where Jim had been digging his holes making enough graves for them to bury their dead. Now that Amy was ready to be taken up with the rest Charlotte went down with Lori and Carol to get the kids from Miranda.
"Coco!"
"Hi, Belly Girl!" Scooping the little girl up Charlotte gave her a tight squeeze, "Were you good for Miss Miranda?" she questioned, looking over at the woman.
"She was," Miranda confirmed, "She had a few moments though."
"What do you mean?" she questioned as they followed Lori, Carol, and the kids back up the hill to where they were burying the dead.
"She got upset saying you and Daryl weren't coming back and that the monsters were gonna get her," Miranda whispered, mindful of the little girl Charlotte was carrying.
Sighing, Charlotte nodded, "Thank you."
Reaching the top of the hill, they stood silently as each of the deceased campers were placed in their grave and buried. When they got to Amy's body, Andrea stepped forward, "I'll do it," she said, pushing Glenn to the side to reach her sister's body.
"I'll help you," Dale declared, lifting Amy's feet while Andrea carefully lifted her head.
Watching Andrea struggle to put Amy into her grave, Charlotte hugged Annabelle tighter, "We're gonna say goodbye to Miss Amy now," she told the little girl.
"She sleepin now with mama."
Closing her eyes, Charlotte took a deep breath, "That's right baby. She's with your mama," opening her eyes at the feel of a hand on her shoulder. Looking over her shoulder she gave Daryl a small smile.
"Darie!" Annabelle squealed, noticing the man standing behind them, launching herself out of Charlotte's arms toward him. Catching her mid swan dive, he held her as they watched Andrea and Dale move the loosened dirt back over Amy's grave.
Once the graves were filled in most of the group left to go back to camp, "I was thinking we could find some flowers or some pretty rocks to mark Amy's grave. Do you want to help?" Charlotte asked, taking Annabelle back from Daryl.
"Charlie!"
Glancing over at Rick's call, she sighed, "Let me see what he wants," she said, halting when he called Daryl over too, "Uh, oh. Guess we're both in trouble," she laughed, snagging his hand and dragging him with her.
"How are you Miss Annabelle?" Rick questioned, smiling at the little girl in Charlotte's arms.
Instead of answering Rick, Annabelle reached her arms out for Daryl, burying her face in his neck when he took her back from Charlotte, "We're working through a few things," Charlotte answered her brother.
"I think we all are," Lori commented.
"Well, that's kind of what I wanted to talk to you two about. What to do next."
"You wanna try for the CDC," she stated, smiling at the surprise on both Rick and Lori's face, "Daryl told me."
Pursing his lips, Rick studied the man standing next to his sister, holding Annabelle like he'd been doing it for years. Giving him a considering look he remembered how the rough man had been yelling for both Charlotte and Annabelle the night before, "Well, what are your thoughts?" he questioned, looking at Daryl.
Blinking, Daryl glanced at Charlotte before shrugging, "Doubt anything will be there, but it's a destination, right? Better than sitting around here just waiting for another group of geeks to come through and take the rest of us out."
"I don't like the monsters!"
At Annabelle's declaration, Charlotte turned to look at the little girl meeting Daryl's eyes over her blonde head, "I know, Honey," she soothed, running her hand down her back.
"Let's go find them flowers," Daryl said, turning with Annabelle and walking away towards the woods.
"He's not what I pegged him to be."
"And what was that?" Charlotte questioned, turning back to her brother and Lori.
"Not the man I'd want my sister to get involved with," Rick answered, "But I think I was wrong," he smiled before taking Lori's hand and heading back down to camp.
Biting her lip she watched them go before turning around and walking to where Daryl had Annabelle picking a bunch of wildflowers at the edge of the woods.
After exclaiming over the flowers Annabelle had picked Charlotte told her to pick a few more before turning to Daryl, "Are you really coming to the CDC?" she asked.
Not taking his eyes off Annabelle he shrugged, "What else am I gonna do?"
"Well, Merle's out there somewhere."
Snorting, he rolled his eyes as he turned his head to look at her, "He knew where I was. He took our damn truck so if he wanted to come back for me he would've. I ain't waiting around for him."
Sighing, she nodded, "I mean I'm glad you're coming, but I'm sad for your brother being an ass."
"Don't need ya to be sad. We ain't like you and yours."
"Well, in any case. I at least hope he's okay out there, and maybe you'll find each other again," she told him.
Grunting, he shrugged before walking away to where Annabelle stood with another large bouquet of flowers overflowing from her arms.
