Chapter 18:

Brooklet Nine Nine

Location: Route 5

"Huzzah!" Hau said. He had took on the Island Challenge before me and was holding up his latest Z-Crystal; the Waterium Z.

"Nice one!" I said. "So, who are you going to use it with?"

"Easy!" Hau replied. "I'm going to evolve Eevee into a Vaporeon, though not until I've beaten Mallow's Grass Types."

"To do that," Rotom Dex said. "You will need a Water Stone. Roto. Maybe Stoutland can sniff one out for you. Zzt."

"Great idea!" Hau said. "I'm looking forward to this!"

"Next challenger." Out came a girl with short blue hair. She was wearing a white top and blue trousers with what looked like a swimsuit underneath.

"You must be Lana," I said "Alola! I'm Elliott."

Lana smiled. "Alola! Come on, let's get you set up!"

"She seemz nizze, Roto!"

Location: Brooklet Hill

I walked through the trial gates to find a small lake with a wooden bridge running across it. Lana was waiting for me at the start of the bridge. Lana was waiting for me.

"So," she said. "Can you swim?"

Actually, I could. I have a few badges for 50m, but that was when the other kids at the Celadon City Pool weren't trying to drown me. "Yeah," I said.

"Well it'll take more than that to try and catch Kyogre," Lana said.

"What?! Zzt! Kyogre? I wazzn't told about thizz! Roto! It'zz the Legendary Pokémon from the Hoenn region that izz said to have raised the sea in a battle with Groudon! Roto!"

Lana laughed. "Well you will need two things. First up, a present." Lana went into her bag and pulled out a Fishing Rod and gave it to me. "You will need this to fish out Pokémon. Next, I will need your Ride Pager." I have it to Lana, who inserted in a chip. "With that, I have added in Lapras! You can now skim across the water!"

I looked at the body of water next to me. "Mind if I try this here?" I asked.

"Sure!" she said.

I faced the body of water and held up the Ride Pager. "I summon Lapras!" Out came the blue Pokémon with the grey shell back.

Lapras (ラプラス)

#353

Water/Ice Type

Transport Pokémon

8'02" (2.5 m)

485 lbs (220 kg)

It likes swimming around with people on its back. In the Alola region, it's an important means of transportation over water.

Lapras has no known evolution.

"Okay," Lana told me. "Now we will try fishing. Go over to a fishing spot, which is a small cluster of rocks with a hole in the top. When there is a rarer Pokémon, it will start bubbling."

I found the cluster of rocks and told Lapras to go over to it. "Okay, let's do this!" I flung the line and the bobber (is that what it's called? I'm not a fishing expert) went into the cluster. I waited for a few seconds before I got a bite.

"Now reel it in!" shouted Lana. I did just that, and out came a Pokémon. It was a… Magikarp.

Magikarp (コイキング)

#111

Water Type

Fish Pokémon

2'11" (0.9 m)

22 lbs (10 kg)

Although weak and helpless, this Pokémon is incredibly fertile. They exist in such multitudes; you'll soon grow tired of seeing them.

"Makuhita, come on out!" I shouted. "Nice easy one this!" Makuhita went forward and punched Magikarp back into the water.

"Roto! Makuhita learned the Dark Type move Knock Off!"

"Knock Off!" I shouted. "Great job Makuhita! That will be useful if you're against a Psychic Type!"

After that, I went back onto dry land. "Okay," Lana said. "I'll meet you at the next lake further down the hill. You will see Kyogre in no time!" After that, she ran off.

As I started walking after her, I was spotted by a Fisherman.

"Hook, lined and I'll beat ya!"

Elliott Vs. Fisherman Ernest

"Go Misdreavus!" I shouted.

"And I choose Barboach!" Ernest sent out a grey-slippery Pokémon.

Barboach (ドジョッチ)

#113

Water/Ground Type

Whiskers Pokémon

1'04" (0.4 m)

4.2 lbs (1.9 kg)

Its slippery body is hard to grasp, so much so that there are festivals where people compete to see how many they can catch barehanded.

"Misdreavus, Confuse Ray!" Misdreavus sent out a weird ray that caused Barboach to become confused.

"No Barboach! Try a Water Gun!" Barboach however hit itself.

Just then, Misdrevaus started down Barboach. It froze stiff. "I think that's Mean Look!" I said.

"Yep! Roto! It preventzz Pokémon from fleeing, which meanzz the confuzzion won't heal by recalling Barboach! Zzt!"

"Barboach, Water Gun again!" Barboach hit itself.

"Now use Astonish!" Misdreavus scared Barboach for little damage. (Astonish was never that strong).

Barboach snapped out of its confusion. "Now use Water Gun!" Barboach fired a jet of water at Misdreavus. It took it very well.

"Now use Psywave!" Misdreavus hit Barboach with a wave of Psychic energy. It was almost down.

"Mud Bomb!" Barboach fired a ball of mud at Misdreavus. But because Misdreavus had Levitate, it did nothing!

"Finish with Astonish!" Misdreavus scared Barboach once more, knocking it out.

"Great one. But now it's time for Goldeen!" The other Pokémon was aquatic and golden. It had a horn on its head.

Goldeen (トサキント)

#186

Water Type

Goldfish Pokémon

2'00" (0.6 m)

33.1 lbs (15 kg)

The way it swims along fluttering its dress-like fins has earned it the name "princess of the water."*

*Despite this nickname, Goldeen has a 1:1 male:female ratio.

"Thanks," I told Misdreavus. "Okay Munchlax, go!" I shouted.

"Goldeen, Horn Attack!" Goldeen jumped forward and stabbed Munchlax with its horn.

"Use Metronome!"

"Be careful Eliott! Roto!"

Munchlax waggled its fingers and used a move. Munchlax sent a ghostly aura towards Goldeen. "Rotom? What was that?" I asked.

"Trick-or-Treat," Rotom Dex said. "It adds Ghost Type to the opposing Pokémon."

"Not Ghost?!" I shouted. "Munchlax can't do much… but I know who can!"

"Goldeen, Water Pulse!" Goldeen fired a ball of water at Munchlax. Upon being hit, Munchlax was confused.

"Come back," I told Munchlax. "Go Makuhita!" I shouted.

"A Fighting Type?!" Ernest said. "What good is there in doing the island challenge if you don't know your Type matchups? Goldeen, Horn Attack!" Goldeen rammed into Makuhita with its horn. "And again!" Goldeen used Horn Attack once more.

"Now Knock Off!" Makuhita slammed its fist down onto Goldeen, who went down in one.

"Great thinking! Roto! Knock Off is Super Effective on Goldeen now!"

"Hook, line and you beat me!"

I continued my way down the hill. I could skim the water now! And fish! It got me even more excited to try and battle Kyogre! If that was the Totem Pokémon, then it would be really challenging.

I walked through some tall grass and found a new Pokémon. This was green with a few legs and a bubble covering its head.

Dewpider (シズクモ)

#174

Water/Bug Type

Water Bubble Pokémon

1'00" (0.3 m)

8.8 lbs (4 kg)

It can only breath oxygen that has dissolved in water, so it wears a water bubble on its head when it walks around on land.

"Go Trumbeak!" I shouted. "Pluck it!" Trumbeak rammed Dewpider with its beak. Dewpider then fired a web at Trumbeak.

"That'zz Sticky Web! Roto! It actzz similar to Mean Look! You can't escape or switch!"

"No need! Trumbeak, Pluck!" Trumbeak hit Dewpider with its beak again, knocking it out.

Following that, I continued on down the hill. I was taken to another lake.

"Wow," Rotom Dex said. "To think a hill can have this many bodies of water. Roto."

I looked into the distance. It was the sea. "We're by the coast but there isn't a beach. I suppose rain water must have filled this up, and on lower levels high waves fill in the basins."

It wasn't even a step before a Backpacker spotted me. "You're right there! Now show your brains in battle!"

Elliott Vs. Backpacker Mikiko

"Go Torracat!" I shouted.

"You're up Fletchling!" Mikiko replied. She sent out a small orange Flying Type with a black beak.

Fletchling (ヤヤコマ)

#192

Normal/Flying Type

Tiny Robin Pokémon

1'00" (0.3 m)

3.7 lbs (1.7 kg)

When it's excited, its temperature can double, spiking hormone production in its body.

"Fletchling, Quick Attack!" Fletchling darted forward and hit Torracat.

"Double Kick!" Torracat kicked Fletchlign twice, almost dealing with it.

"Now use Flail!" Fletchling tossed and turned all over the place, eventually hitting Torracat.

"Now use Fire Fang!" Torracat chomped down with its fiery fangs and knocked out Fletchling.

"You did show your brains in battle! Do that against the Totem Pokémon to!"

I saw Lana on a wooden pier, so I went over to her.

"You got use to fishing and riding?" she asked.

"Yeah!" I said. "Now, let's see Kyogre!"

"Oh," she said. "I was joking! Kyogre isn't here!"

"WHAT?! ROTO?!"

Well Mallow did say she was a bit of a jokester. I felt a bit naïve to say the least, but I didn't let that get me down. There is a difference between joking and lying after all. Not a huge difference but a difference in context.

"So," Lana said. "Let's let the trial… commence!"

Brooklet Hill Trial: Start!

"Now that you know the basics, what you need to do is go about and battle the Pokémon that are fished out of bubbling crevices." Lana pointed out to the lake where there were some wild goings on in the water.

"That muzzt be one! Roto! Remember Elliott, you're not allowed to catch anything. Zzt."

"Correct," said Lana. "There are three more lakes. Battle two Pokémon in bubbling crevices in this lake and the next and then meet me at the bottom lake, which is the Totem's Den."

"Sounds good!" I said. "I will see you down there!" I summoned Lapras and swam off.

I reached the first bubbling area and a Pokémon jumped out. And… it was small and silver. It looked like it was about to cry.

Wishiwashi (ヨワシ)

#133

Water Type

Small Fry Pokémon

0'08" (0.2 m)

0.7 lbs (0.3 kg)

They're weak, so they move in schools. However, they can also often be seen all alone, having strayed from the school.

Wishiwashi has no known evolution, but it is known to-

"Go Makuhita!" I shouted.

"Wait! Roto! I haven't finished my entry yet! He'zz not gonna lizzten is he…"

Wishiwashi went first, attacking with Brine. It shot salty water at Makuhita. "Makuhita, use Force Palm!" Makuhita grabbed Wishiwashi and clenched its fist. Wishiwashi was down in one.

"Well, that was easy," I said. "Okay, onto the next lake."

"Hold on!" Rotom Dex said. "Maybe you shouldn't get too cocky…"

"Cocky?" I replied. "Pu-lease! If that's what we're up against, I feel this will be a piece of cake! Onto the other lake!" As I walked away, I thought a saw a bunch of Wishiwashi go into a tunnel below the surface…

I walked down the path to lake number two.

"Elliott, pleazze be careful. Roto. Big thingzz don't alwayzz come in small packagezz, but when there are lot'zz of the packagezz..."

"Don't worry!" I said, summoning Lapras again. I hopped on and headed towards the next bubbling water. A Wishiwashi jumped out. "Go Trumbeak!" I shouted. "Use Pluck!" Trumbeak stabbed Wishiwashi with its beak. Wishiwashi came back with Feint Attack, appearing from behind Trumbea and hitting it. "Now Rock Smash!" Trumbeak hit Wishiwashi back into the water.

"Done!" I said. "Now to take on the Totem Pokémon!"

"I've got a bad feeling about thizz… Roto…"

As I walked down the path, I noticed that clouds were starting to gather. "Oh great," I said. "Rotom, get inside my Bag if you don't want to malfunction."

"Zzt, it's fine! I'm rainproof! Roto! Trust me, I think you might need me for this! I juzzt can't fall in a large body of water… Roto…"

As Rotom Dex said this, it started to rain a bit.

I walked into the Totem's Den, which was the biggest lake of the lot. A short distance away, waves crushed into the rocky walls and brought more water into it.

"Hey!" Lana said. "I believe that the Totem is ready for you!"

"Totem?" I asked. "Really. Another Wishiwashi?"

Lana looked at me. "You will just have to find out."

I got on Lapras and started surfing to the middle of lake. "Wait! Roto!"

I looked back in the direction. "Rotom, what is i-"A large shadow was coming up in the water behind us. "Lana… what is that?"

"See you after you beat the Totem!" Lana said, running off as the drizzle turned into a downpour.

"I tried to warn you. Roto."

Suddenly, it jumped out. A large-dark blue Pokémon. Wait, it wasn't a single Pokémon; it was multiple Wishiwashi!

Wishiwashi (ヨワシ)

#133

Water Type

Small Fry Pokémon

26'11" (8.2 m)

173.3 lbs (78.6 kg)

Weak Wishiwashi school together to concentrate their power. Their united force makes them the "demon of the sea," feared near and far.

Wishiwashi has no known evolution, but it is known to school up like this because of its Schooling Ability!

"Here it comes!" I shouted.

Elliott Vs. Totem Pokémon Wishiwashi

An aura went around Totem Wishiwashi, raising its Defense.

"This'll be tricky!" Rotom Dex said. "And this is why you should have listened to me!"

"Have a go at me later!" I told it. "For now, we have a trial to beat. Torracat, go!" Whilst I was aware of the weakness, that is why I was going with Torracat first. "Use Double Kick!" Torracat kicked at Totem Wishiwashi twice. Wishiwashi then came back with Water Gun. It knocked out Torracat in one. "Oh no!" I shouted. "THAT was a Water Gun?" Suddenly, Totem Wishiwashi started calling. Then, a pink Pokémon leaped out of the water to join in.

Alomomola (ママンボウ)

#191

Water Type

Caring Pokémon

3'11" (1.2 m)

69.7 lbs (31.6 kg)

It uses its special mucus to close the wounds of injured Pokémon. The reason for this behaviour remains unknown.

Alomomola has no known evolutions.

"Come out Makuhita!" I shouted. "Use Fake Out on Wishiwashi!" Makuhita clapped in front of Totem Wishiwashi, making it flinch. Just then, Alomomola let off a calming aura that healed it.

"No! Roto! That'zz Heal Pulse! It can heal an ally!"

"Then we'll just have to take down Alomomola first!" I said.

Alomomola darted forward with an Aqua Jet. Then, Makuhita came back with Force Palm. It paralyzed Alomomola. "Nice one!" I shouted just as the paralysis was quickly healed. "Now what?!"

"It must be Hydration!" Rotom Dex said. "It's an Ability that heals status conditions in the rain!"

Totem Wishiwashi attacked with another Water Gun which thankfully Makuhita took. Alomomola used Aqua Jet, and by now Makuhita was just about holding on. "Use Force Palm again!" Makuhita clenched its fist down on Alomomola again, almost knocking it out. Totem Wishiwashi came back with another Water Gun, finishing off Makuhita. "We need Speed then, got it. Go Trumbeak!" Out came my Flying Type. "Use Pluck attack!" Trumbeak pecked at Alomomola. The Critical Hit took it down.

"Great one! Roto!"

Totem Wishiwashi then came back with a Brine attack. It almost knocked out Trumbeak. "Use Rock Smash! Let's lower its Defense!" Trumbeak hit Totem Wishiwashi. It did little, but like I planned, its Defense fell. Wishiwashi used Water Gun again, taking out Trumbeak.

"Don't worry," I said. "I've got this. Go Munchlax!" Yeah, you know what it was time for. Well, after Totem Wishiwashi hit Munchlax with a Brine. "Ya ready?" I asked Munchlax, who nodded back in reassurance. We put both our arms out in front. "Totem Wishiwashi, your time is almost up! It's time to ungroup! Munchlax…" We both put our arms in a square formation. "BREAKNECK BLITZ!" Munchlax dashed forward into Totem Wishiwashi who took lots of damage from the move. So much, that most of the Wishiwashi ungrouped, leaving a solo one.

"You've broken through! Roto! Now, strike while the Wishiwashi is solo! Zzt!"

Totem Wishiwashi used another Water Gun, but this one was piddling compared to the one by the School Form. "Now use Chip Away!" Munchlax punched Wishiwashi back into the water. Terrified, the poor thing swam off.

"We did it!" I shouted as Munchlax ran into my arms. "Great job Munchlax!" At that point, the sun also came out. It created a rainbow.

"Hey!" Lana shouted from the shore. "Congratulations!" I sailed back to dry land. "Great job! I watched the whole thing!"

"And what did you learn today?" Rotom Dex. "You can't judge a Pokémon by its cover. Except Bruxish, that thing is hideous no matter what way you put it."

"And now," said Lana. "This." She handed me my next Z-Crystal.

I got… the Waterium Z!

"So," I asked Lana. "What's the pose?"

"Well," she said. Lana put both her hands in front, then to the side. She started swaying her arms like a wave, then brushed them to the other side quickly. "The move you get to use is called Hydro Vortex!"

"Slowpoke can make great use of this!" I said.

"Also, Pokémon traded to you up to Lv. 30 will now obey! You're getting stronger! Okay, the next trial I would recommend is Kiawe's Trial." She pointed to the sky where black smoke was going into the air. "That is coming from Wela Volcano, where Kiawe is the trail captain. That is your next stop."

"Got it!" I said. "I will start heading there next!" I looked at my Waterium Z. "My next Z-Crystal. I can't believe it!"

"Oh, and the Legendary Heatran is up there!" Lana said.

"Really?!" I replied.

"Just joking!" she replied.

Rotom's Move Dex!

Roto! What a wet and wild day! I almozzt malfunctioned! Zzt. So, Elliott got his newezzt Z-Cryzztal! He can now uzze the Water Type Z-move! So, it'zz time to look at a Water Type move! Today we will be looking at…

Water Spout!

Water Spout is kinda like the oppozzite of Flail. The more HP the uzzer hazz, the stronger the move. Roto! And Water Spout is a VERY strong move. 130 bazze power! That'zz insane! Let'zz just say that it'zz bezzt to get that move off azz soon azz you can. Zzt zzt!

Pokémon that can learn Water Spout include Wailord and Jellicent.

Be thankful that Totem Wishiwashi didn't know Water Spout; that would have been difficult! Roto!
