Chapter 1
Five girls... and one nearly impossible choice. It's hard to believe that I was going to confess my love to a woman I had only become friends with a little over a year ago, yet here I am. The only thing stopping me was a single door leading to the rooftop, where just recently I had shared a kiss with a girl, without my consent, I should add! Normally I would have felt nervous about this, I mean, confessing your love to someone is no easy task after all. Yet all the anxiety, all the pressure I was supposed to experience was pretty much nonexistent at this point.
I reached for the handle and opened the door slowly, muttering "Here we go..." as I readied myself for what I was about to say. Yet by the time I fully opened the door, I was at a loss for words.
There she was, a beauty with brown hair and eyes as blue as the sea leaning on the railings, her signature blue earphones wrapped around her neck as she watched the festivities happening below. She seemed to be deep in thought as she didn't notice me walking up to her.
I leaned on the railing beside her, much to her surprise. "Hey, penny for your thoughts?"
"Fu-Fuutarou? What are you doing here? Yotsuba should be in the clinic! Go, on, Hurry! You mustn't keep a girl waiting during these kinds of things!"
I smiled, "And why should I be going to Yotsuba? Because she was the girl I fell in love with six years ago?"
Miku's silence and her desperate attempts to avoid eye contact were all the confirmation I needed to know that really was the case.
I sighed and reached into my bag, bringing out a can of matcha soda and pressing it against her cheek, to which Miku let out a slight yelp.
I smirked, reminiscing about the first time we ever interacted with each other. "You cannot believe how hard it is to find these in vending machines! But then again with something as unique as matcha soda you wouldn't really find that many places to get some... Oh, and don't worry, there's no snot in it!"
She giggles for a bit before taking the soda, "This reminds me of how desperate you were to get me to join you when we first met! Time flew by really quick, didn't it, Fuutarou?"
"I guess it has been quite a while... we just started off as student and teacher, and now things have gotten closer between the two of us. Well with your confession in Kyoto and how you kissed me just the other day, we've gotten quite intimate, wouldn't you say?"
A look of embarrassment was shown on Miku's face, clearly, she wasn't ready for this conversation to pop up any time soon.
"You know, you've done so many things to show how much you love me, and I still haven't repaid you for the Valentine's chocolate, so I guess now is the best time to repay all the love you've given me."
I took one of her hands in mine and stare into her eyes, "Miku Nakano, I love you. I never thought in my life I would actually say these words to anyone, but here I am. Ever since meeting you, my life has been nothing but hell..." Miku raised an eyebrow at the comment but I continued on, "but it was a fun hell I would never want to get out of. Being with you just lit a spark in the heart I never knew I had. Back then, studying was all that mattered to me, but now I realized that there are things, no, people, that are worth every single bit of my being, and you're that person, Miku. I know this all sounds cliché, but I meant every bit of it! So please, as my last question as your tutor, will you answer this question. Will you be my girlfriend?"
Miku, teary eyed, looked at me and nodded. "Yes... I'll be in your care then, Fuutarou!" She dropped the can of soda and tackled me, causing the both of us to fall down to the floor.
There was a moment of silence before I started laughing, "Why am I not surprised? Pinning me to the ground has always been your way of showing affection, hasn't it?" I placed my hand on Miku's head as she continued to giggle.
She looked up and smiled, "I could stop if you want..."
"Nah, you can continue doing it if you want, as long as you don't get hurt, I don't mind getting tackled."
We stayed in this position for a while, enjoying each other's company, until suddenly a very familiar voice popped up. "Ara ara... how long are you two love birds going to stay like that?"
Miku and I looked up to reveal the rest of the Nakano quintuplets waiting by the door. Ichika being the one who called out to us. "Girls? What are you doing here?" I asked as Miku and I got off of each other and stood up.
"Obviously we got tired of waiting for you two, Fuu-kun. I mean, you guys have been in that position for so long we just had to butt in!" yelled the ever so hotheaded Nino.
I walked up to her and nearly started arguing with her, but instead I smiled and patted her on the head. "Right... sorry about that Nino, I know how much you love me, heck you were really aggressive ever since that confession at the bakery! I really appreciate it, Nino, but Miku is the woman I love, hope we can still stay friends after all this though."
"I... You dont even need to ask that! We'll always be close, no matter what!" said the embarrassed Nino as she turns away to hide her tears. "I'm happy for you, Miku! But if you ever leave him unattended, you best believe that I'll take him for myself!"
Miku smiled and gave Nino a big hug, "You know I'll never give you the chance, right? I love Fuutarou and that's never going to change."
Yotsuba walked up to me and smiled. "Uesugi-san! Congrats on getting a girlfriend! I'm really... really... really glad... for you!" Despite what Yotsuba was saying, tears were streaming down her face. I felt bad for her and awkwardly gave her a hug.
"Yotsuba... I know you've been keeping in your feelings for so long, and I'm an ass for not reciprocating them, and it hurts me to see you cry. Especially after all we've been through! So I promise, even if I didn't love you back, I'll always be there for you, just as how you've always been there for me." I brought my hand to her face and wiped away the tears.
Yotsuba sniffled for a bit longer but eventually smiled, this time genuinely. "Thanks Uesugi, no Fuutarou-san! You better keep your promise, otherwise I'm dragging you along with me on a 25 km marathon! shishishi!"
The final quint walked up to me and smiled, "Congratulations are in order, Uesugi-kun. You finally understood what you've been feeling and acted accordingly, I couldn't expect less from you!" She then leaned in closer so that no one else could hear, "But if you hurt Miku in any way, you know whats coming to you, understand?"
My hand instinctively protected my cheek as I remember how loud she smacked Nino a few months ago. "Yeah, you know I'd never hurt her, Itsuki. And don't you think it's time to call me by my first name now? We are close friends now, aren't we?"
"W-w-well... if you insist Fu-Fu-Fuesugi-kun! Agh! I just can't bring myself to say it just yet! Please give me some time to get used to it!" said a very flustered Itsuki, much to my amusement.
"Fine, you always did need more time to apply things after all." I said as we joined the rest of the quintuplets.
After a few more minutes of talking, we all went down to the main gate. Suddenly, Nino raised a question that we were all unprepared for, "By the way... do you think Papa would actually allow Fuu-kun to date Miku? I mean Fuu-kun has always been on Papa's bad side, I don't think he'll take the new of the two of you dating very well."
I shuddered at the question. "I'll think of something, I always do, so no need to worry about it!"
Miku held my hand tightly, "Correction: We'll think of something, I'm not letting you do this alone anymore, I'll be there to support you every step of the way!"
A collective "Awwww" was made by everyone present, including Maeda and Takeda, who somehow infiltrated the group a couple of minutes ago. I looked at them with slight annoyance, "How the hell did you guys get here? Didn't I leave my work with you two to do?"
Maeda hooked his arm around my neck,"Oddly enough your work was simple enough to do with some help, you made it look so troublesome, man! Plus with Takeda's twinkling schtick we managed to find quite a few people who would help us."
"Yes, Uesugi-kun, your work was meant for more than one person, I'm amazed you decided to do everything on your own." added Takeda.
"I just didn't want to bother everyone else, plus I'm the class rep, I gotta do the work while the rest of you enjoyed the festival."
Maeda groaned, "And you still ended up dumping it all on us anyway, for a genius you do lack common sense sometimes" everyone else, including me, laughed at the comment.
"I guess you're right, Maeda. Which is why I got you and Takeda to back me up from now on, right?"
Maeda and Takeda couldn't help but smile as they finally got acknowledged by me, after updating them on what happened, they said their goodbyes and headed back home, leaving me and the quints at the gate.
Ichika looked at her sisters and smiled, "I guess we better head home then, c'mon girls let's leave Miku and her new boy toy to themselves for a bit, they deserve it." The remaining quints except for a very flustered Miku agreed and headed back to the penthouse, leaving just me and Miku at the gate
I held Miku's hand and smiled, "So... wanna head over to the park first? There's this place at the playground that Yotsuba took me to and it has a great view of the city."
Miku smiled at the thought of us going together somewhere, "Yeah... I would love that!" and with that, we walked towards the park.
As we walked, Miku stopped for a but, with a conflicted look on her face, "Fuutarou, why did you choose me out of all of my sisters? Believe me, I'm happy that you chose me, but all of my sisters, Yotsuba especially, would have made a better girlfriend for you, so why me?"
I looked at her and sighed. I walked up to her and lightly karate chopped her head. "Because you're you, silly. I fell in love with you because you're hard working, you never give up, and you always try your best! And most of all... the moments I've shared with you, that time at the igloo, at the hot springs, during the Kyoto trip, at the roof a couple days ago, and when I confessed to you earlier, those were all the happiest times of my life. And with you, I know I'll be able to experience more happy moments in the future, and who knows? Maybe along the line we can share these moments with children of our own..."
I leaned in to kiss Miku, but as I was about to do so I noticed something coming straight at us, a car was coming right at us, and by the looks of it the driver was drunk too. I had little time to think and did the only thing I could, I pushed Miku away from me right before the car came. "Watch out—" was all I could say before I got crashed into, I went flying across the street and landed several meters away from Miku.
Miku rushed to my side, tears rolling down her cheeks, "Fuutarou! Don't worry, I'll call father! He'll know what to do! Just please hang in there!"
I weakly raised my hand and rubbed the tears off her face "You're alright... that's good..." I tried to observe the damage the car had done to me but I winced in pain. "That collision... messed me up a lot... didn't it? I don't think... I'll make it, Miku... sorry."
"No! You can't die like this! You can't! Weren't we just talking about the future? I can't lose you, Fuutarou, I just can't!"
"Hey... it's alright. Please don't cry anymore... I wouldn't be able to... face your family... if the last thing I did... was make you cry!" I joked before wincing again from the pain.
Miku tried her best to stop crying, but could only smile with tears in her eyes, "I love you, Fuutarou, no matter what!" she leans in to kiss me, and I do nothing to stop her, not that I could do anything to begin with.
After the kiss I looked at Miku and smiled, "Thank you... for everything... I think... I'll go to sleep... for a bit." And with that, I closed my eyes, my consciousness fading as my life was about to end, "Did I do good, Mom?" were my final thoughts before everything went to black.
I was dead.
