AN: This story takes place in Season 6 Episode 11, Town Father. Sam Booth is running for re-election for mayor of Cabot Cove and this time he has competitors. A mysterious woman claims that Sam promised to marry her and that he is the father of her children. In this scene, Seth is over for dinner at Jessica's house and they are interrupted by two councilmen, Ebenezer McHenry, and Howard who encourage Jessica to run for mayor. They make a few suggestive comments about Seth being over there so late which never fails to make me laugh when I watch this episode and here's what happened following that encounter.

"I mean Sam just doesn't seem like the sort of person who would lead a double life, he's an open book!" Jessica said as she washed the dishes at the sink while Seth in one of her pink aprons walked over to the stove where he was cooking one of his meals that they had for dinner.

"Something by Jaqueline Susann." Seth replied to her comment as he seasoned the pot.

"Do you know that he's lived in the same house since he was born? I've never even seen him out on a date." She turned to look at Seth.

"May not be quite as harmless as you thought eh?" he asked.

"You know Seth Hazlitt, you really are an old gossip, you know that?" She said, drying her hands with the dishtowel.

"You're absolutely wrong. I'm merely an informed citizen who, come election day, is going to exercise his God-given right at the ballot box." He walked over to the kitchen table and set the salt and pepper back in the center as Jessica merely smiled at him with her back turned. "This year," he added, "I'm actually going to vote."

"Mhmm," Jessica nodded. She turned around as a knock came upon the door. "I'll get it." Opening the door she found the two councilmen, Ebenezer McHenry and Howard

"Howard, Ebenezer," She greeted them.

"Hope we're not interrupting anything Jessica?" Ebenezer asked.

"Of course not, come inside."

Both men stepped inside the kitchen. As Howard removed his hat, they spotted Seth by the stove, and immediately both sets of eyes grew wide with surprise and wonder at what exactly they were witnessing.

"Doc." Howard began, "What are you doing here?"

Seth turned around to look at both of them.

"Well, I might ask you the same question Howard," He replied.

"Emergency!" Howard pointed out.

"Oh," Seth started to head for the door to the dining room. "Let me get my bag."

"No it's not you Doc," Ebenezer informed him, "It's Jessica's help we need."

"What?" Jessica asked.

"As you know Jessica, Ebenezer and I sit on the city council," Howard said, nervously gripping his cap.

"And the only way we've been able to keep the zoning the way it needs to be is because Sam has been providing the swing vote," Ebenezer said. Jessica nodded along.

"But because of this scandal, Sam may not be re-electable." Howard told her.

"And if Milton Overguard is elected that will tip the council towards the zoning changes. Yes, it certainly is cause for alarm but uh, what can I do?" Jessica asked.

Howard's eyes grew wide and a grin broke onto his face as he told her,

"Run for mayor."

Jessica's face turned into one of confusion. "What?"

"Now there's an idea!" Seth piped up from the background cleaning his glasses.

"You would be a shoo-in!" Ebenezer said.

"Oh but surely there are others who are far more qualified than I am," Jessica argued.

"Everybody likes you, Jessica," Howard told her.

"They respect your judgment. And you've got the good sense to keep your trap shut." Ebenezer said.

"And you have no history of...philandering." Howard stuttered. At that moment Seth cleared his throat as he took off Jessica's apron. All three turned to Seth as Howard's eyes grew wide with alarm again. "...Do you?" He asked concerned as Seth just stood there.

"Thank you, both of you, but I have just finished two books in a row and I'm looking forward to a nice rest." She smiled at the two men.

"Aww but you're the only celebrity we have in this town." Ebenezer pleaded.

"You're uniquely qualified," Howard stated.

"Yes," Ebenezer agreed, "No one has your style, your popularity,-"

"Your intelligence, you're one of a kind Jessica," Howard interrupted.

"One of a kind." Ebenezer agreed.

"Gentlemen!" Jessica said with a bright smile on her face. "Thank you. I'm really very flattered ...but the answer is 'no'. Unequivocally, no."

Both men dropped their faces slightly when Ebenezer noticed Seth about to leave the room.

"What about you Doc?" He asked. "Would you consider running" Jessica's face deadpanned and she suddenly became worried about the answer that Seth might give. However, Seth merely turned around, grinned slightly, and gave a look that made it clear, that would never happen before turning around again and walking into the dining room.
