Entry 1 :
Let's begin with a fact that crushed my heart long ago.
" There is nothing special about me ."
Taking a deep breath to clear my mind I willed my voice to whisper a new fact .
Perhaps call me smart or pretty even .
But my lips are practiced in the dance of this single sentence.
Perfectly brainwashed to the idea of being an average failure .
" There is nothing special about me ."
I constantly stab myself with my own words without flinching.
Plenty of invisible blades rust away in the spots that they had first slashed into me .
" There is nothing special about me ."
Those awful words proved to be false.
There was something special about me and the cause of it fell from the sky today .
Like a gift from God .
Like an offering of Fate .
Like a stolen apple from Eden .
We saw the notebook tumbled out onto the lawn of the courtyard .
Eyes peering out the window due to the influence of boredom slithering through our minds .
Leafs of paper flapping in the air until the cover slammed shut in the aftermath of kissing the earth .
Drilling the rubber of the pencil against the wooden desk .
Brushing my teeth over my bottom lip .
A light sigh slipping out from full lungs .
I had decided that the notebook needed to be in my hands .
The ringing of the bell danced through the classroom.
The pencil rolled off the desk while I rushed to my feet .
Throwing my bag over my shoulder without double checking its contents .
Weaving through the crowds with the use of sharp elbows.
The classmates shied away from the pain echoing from their ribs.
Some of them yell insults at my back , their words never filled my mind with any emotional response.
The simple fact was that they had been in my way .
Now they were no longer in my way .
When I wandered over to the part of the lawn where the black notebook laid, my hands twitched .
Almost like an unconscious instinct had been unlocked in my waking mind , telling my hands that they must pick up the book .
" Did you see it fall from the sky too ," Light asked from behind me .
His voice was low enough to keep the giggling girls on the bench from hearing him .
" Why are you using a library voice ? "
I caught one of the girl's eyes while staring over Light's shoulder .
A blush settled upon the girl's face , before her friend quickly pulled her off the bench .
That's when a childish pout melted away the blush .
Our eye contact broke and the girls rushed away with a storm of giggles stalking their steps .
Annoying.
Snapping fingers in front of my face focused my attention back onto Light .
" They're gone now so use your outside voice ."
It's annoying for my ears to decipher the meaning behind the wisps of spoken words .
Light rolled his eyes while he knelt to pick up the book .
The notebook was sadly not a spiral one , where it was easy to rip out pages without having the covers and spine fall apart soon after .
But by all accounts it was ordinary.
Blood races through my veins though , quick with the power of adrenaline.
Standing on the tips of my shoe-covered toes , I was barely about to glance down at the open pages of the book .
Light was way too tall .
I made up my mind to trip him later.
Maybe when he is called up to the board to write and solve an equation.
On the way up , a well timed stretch of my leg out into his path could do the trick .
Knock the king off his high horse for a moment.
Smiling , my eyes barely processed the words written upon the page .
Something about the notebook influenced my body's functions but… my mind seems both intrigued and wanting to steer its focus away from it .
Odd .
" It's like one of those chain letters ," Light said , shutting the notebook with a gentle quickness.
" Well that's truly stupid," I said , not really processing that Light was brushing by with his chin held up proudly.
It was the perfect opportunity to stick a foot out .
Giggling while he slammed face first into the grass .
But instead I grabbed his hand , squeezing it until he quietly whizzed in discomfort.
His hand was a limp creature that was patiently waiting for me to talk .
" What did it say ?"
" You looked over my shoulder at it ."
Pressing my lips together , nails attempt to sink into the soft flesh of Light's hand .
He pulled out of my grasp before blood could be drawn though .
" Whoever's name is written in the note shall die ."
Glancing over towards him , a little smirk danced across my lips.
" Let you know if it works ," I said, kneeling to pick up the note from the grass .
Flipping it over towards the front my mind finally let my eyes connect the dots to something.
Something it had seen but chose to forget .
In oddly illustrated letters that were the color of bone the title cover reads , Death Note .
A hurried series of blinks leaves me with a hazy memory .
Blood letters authored with a hurried hand across a lined paper.
Letters that formed names .
Names of those that were doomed.
" I revoke ownership ," my voice had gasped .
The memory fades away with the quickness it used to first appear .
The weight of a palm melts into my shoulder blade.
The death note is held against my gasping chest .
My knees have completely tumbled onto the grass .
Before a single name is written upon the fresh pages my mind is convinced that it is real .
" This isn't a chain letter… this isn't a sick joke ."
" Prove it ," Light said.
My blood boils underneath my skin , making my cheeks blush in rage .
I shrugged Light's palm off my shoulder, glaring daggers into his dark gaze .
" Prove it to yourself."
Shoving the death note into his chest , felt like ripping out my pounding heart and sprouting wings all that once .
This was better than tripping him in front of the all inspired class .
This was cruel to myself.
My hands longed to write down names .
My eyes longed to watch the owners of said names die .
Clasping their chests and falling onto their knees.
Plenty of heart attacks and more creative deaths .
Closing my eyes I tried to recall the details of my faded memories .
Only flashes of bulging eyes drowning in frozen terror find my minds gaze .
" Are you brave enough to try it out ?"
Tears slid from the corners of my eyes , my nose wrinkled up in disgust.
Why am I crying ?
Light never dares to wipe away the watery nuisances .
He knows that a mouth full of teeth would be his earnings for that act of kindness.
Unnecessary kindness .
" Are you brave enough to watch me try it … you seem almost terrified of the notebook ," Light teased , a little smirk dancing upon his lips .
To an outsider that could not hear our words this would look like flirting .
Maybe this was our way of flirting .
Maybe this was just our way of aggravating each other.
Light tucked the death note into his bag before stalking off .
Without a word he is calling for me to scamper after him like an eager puppy .
He is truly a bastard .
I rushed after him before settling in step with him .
Walking beside him as an equal .
For the first time in a while I felt like I was his equal .
Maybe in a strange way even his better .
What an odd thought that my mind focused on during our walk .
His home was its same boring self .
" Akira needs tutoring in math ," Light quickly tells his mother when she greets us at the door .
Hardly two steps into the Yagami home and his mother appears out of nowhere .
Light scratches the back of head in a show of mock bashfulness.
" No one else could help her ," he muttered like he was a boy attempting to example his choice behind helping his cruel ex .
I glanced down to my feet , fingers playing with the fraying ends of my coat sleeves.
" Your son is truly too kind ."
My voice was a whisper that nearly quivered with false nervousness .
" I am proud that he is so kind ," His mother responded before telling us that dinner would be ready in an hour .
We climbed the stairs silently , a giggle bursting from me when the bedroom closed behind us .
My back slid down the cool wood of the door.
" Your mother really just invited me to dinner?"
Light pulled the notebook from his bag to place it on his desk .
" Does that really matter, Akira ?"
Rolling my eyes at his disregard , I pulled myself from the ground and snatched up his remote.
" Her reaction just confused me a little bit , I expected more glares or a demand for me to get out of her fucking house ."
The little television on the nightstand next is his desk blares to life with the doomed filled report of the news .
" Now we just need a name-."
" and a face ," Light said , snapping a pen to life .
It hovered over the clean paper for a moment before it rolled limping out onto it .
Light leans back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest while he stares up at the ceiling .
" So if I write a name that person dies…unbelievable."
My ears catch the word hostage floating from the tiny tv .
" Say if it did work wouldn't that technically make me a murderer ," he said , words more directed towards himself then at me .
I turned the volume up on the television , hopeful that Light would take the bait .
If he was told to write down a criminal's name, the action would never take place .
He would slam the notebook shut and call it all foolish .
But if his mind came up with an idea on its own then a name would surely be written down .
Light's greatest flaw was the thirst to fix anything that he saw as broken or as wrong .
His ears honed in on the reporters chatter about the hostage situation .
His dark eyes glazed over with the glow of the screen .
A mugshot of the villain flashed across the moving picture .
The name of the villain was revealed as well .
He clicked the pen to life , pressing the inky tip to the page with a focused pressure .
Once the pen stilled , dropping from between his fingers I snatched it up .
Scribbling Charles Milles Manson diagonally underneath Lights orderly in between the lines script.
He sighed , fingers flicking my temple in retaliation for my classic messiness .
Chuckling , we watched the seconds on the clock trial by .
The seconds hit the forty second mark and Light like always is impatient to a fault .
" Guess it doesn't work ," He said, reaching for the remote in my hand .
I put it behind my back , stepping backwards before tumbling onto the bed .
" Akira , stop acting like a child ."
The television blares to life with childish shrieks and a reporter declaring that the hostages had rushed out of the building .
" Patience is a virtue for a reason ," I taunted , propping my head against a pillow .
" This just ended … the suspect is dead … I repeat the suspect has been found dead in the building ."
I turned off the television , filling the air with a deep silence.
Lights settles back into his chair with wide eyes that are still locked on the screen .
" It could just be a coincidence ," he muttered after squeezing his eyes shut for a few moments .
" Want to do another test run ," I taunted , already expecting the glare that was quickly pointed at me .
I smiled and asked him the question again .
" Get out ," He growled , locks of hair settling over his eyes .
Casting an eerie darkness over his features save for his lips .
His teeth were gritted , snarled like a caged tiger .
His nails sunk into the thin cushion of his chair arms .
I went to snatch the notebook up when his hand captured mine.
My fingertips just hardly managed to brush against the covers bone white title .
A chill raced down my spin .
Licking my lips , I brought my face closer to his .
The tips of our noses brushing against one another .
Neither of us breathed during that tense glaring contest .
" Try it again and again and the result will never change ."
I wanted him to stop being so stubborn.
I backed away , tugging my hand out of his hold .
" Promise not to write my name down ," I said , sticking my finger out in his direction.
Without a pause his finger wrapped around mine in a tight squeeze.
" Only if you promise to not write my name ."
" That's a deal , Light ."
Our fingers fell away from each other .
Our gazes dropped one another with the quickness of a flickering switch .
Light is quick to tuck the notebook into a drawer, making it quick clear that it's his night to watch the prized child .
Fine by me , when I really want to go on a spree that notebook will find its way back into my hands again .
" Staying for dinner ."
" Rather become a caged bird ," I said , running a hand through my hair .
Discovering an uncomfortable amount of tangles that left my scalp aching .
Light laughed lightly at my last comment.
I wonder if he truly finds any humor in those words ?
Light's mother is humming as she stirs a pot of broth .
If only she knew what her son had just done .
What horrible things he would do in the future .
He was like me .
A bored soul that was long tired of this rotten world .
He settled into the seat next to mine that afternoon in cram school .
" Free after class ," He asked me for the first time in months.
He never bothered to spare me a glance from the corner of his eyes .
" Only if we are going to be doing something exciting."
" Find handwriting practice exciting?"
What a smart ass .
" Absolutely , how could I not ."
………………. I am about to pass out and this pen hardly holds any ink . Finish the story later , dearest diary .
Body count -
Light - 1
Akira - 7 1 = 8
I remember 7 bloody names being on the notepaper in that flash of hazy memories .
Now sleeep for me
