A/N: I apologize for taking so long to write and post this. As I said in my profile update, life has intruded, as it often does, and I've had a hard time getting back to the story. I want to thank all of you who have shown interest and have offered advice on formatting. It had been so long since I had written anything other than emails to friends that I had forgotten. With that said;
ON WITH THE SHOW!
Disclaimer: I own nothing here; just playing around with a few of my favorite characters
Chapter 5
Harry stared at the clock. 1:47 a.m. He had lain awake since going to bed. He couldn't sleep. His mind just wouldn't shut down. Everything he had learned kept flying around in his head.
Giving it up as a bad job, Harry decided to go for a walk. Yes, it was early morning, but nothing ever happened in Little Whinging. In fact, Harry had never heard of a crime being committed here. Not counting Dudley and his gang, but that was petty shit and bullying. No, nothing serious had ever occurred here as far as he knew.
Since he couldn't count on Mundungus Fletcher being his watcher tonight, he decided to sneak out the back. Taking his invisibility cloak from his trunk. He draped it around his shoulders. Cautiously creeping down the stairs, being extra careful of the creaking stair, Harry silently made his way to the kitchen and out the back door.
Looking around, he couldn't see anyone. But that didn't mean there was no one there. He stood silently, listening for any sound. Finally deciding that he was alone, he jumped over the fence, folded, pocketed his cloak, and began to walk.
Not really paying attention to where he was going, Harry was startled from his thoughts.
"Hello, Harry."
Looking up, Harry realized his feet had taken him to the park. Sitting there on the swing was Mavis.
"Oh! Hello, Mavis."
Looking at him curiously, Mavis asked, "Something troubling you?"
"We haven't known each other that long, Mavis, and I wouldn't want to burden you with my problems," Harry told her.
Changing tack, Mavis asked, "Harry are we friends?"
"I would like to think so. But, my friends I thought I had at school haven't written at all this summer. So, I'm not sure if I have any." Harry replied.
Mavis said, taking his hand in hers, "I would like to be your friend, Harry. And I'm sure your other friends are just busy with other things, Ater all, the school hasn't been out very long, and they're probably doing things with family."
"I suppose that could be true, but they've never waited more than a day to write. Especially Hermione."
"Well, I'll still listen if you want to talk, and I won't tell anyone anything if you don't want me to."
After thinking, Harry decided to tell Mavis all he had learned.
Starting with the Will reading and who his guardians should have been. And that the Will had revealed that The Headmaster had known his Godfather was innocent and therefore had left him to rot in prison to place Harry with the Dursleys, how the will had emancipated him so that he was an adult now in the wizarding world and the revelation that he had been since the beginning of the Triwizard fiasco. And lastly, the results of the Inheritance test and the decision to send a note to his Godfather Sirius for help.
Mavis waited for him to finish, then sat deep in thought for a few moments. "Let me see if I've got it all. Sirius Black is your Godfather, wrongly imprisoned for something he didn't do, and Dumbledore knew the truth. Also, he placed you in an abusive home against your parent's wishes and, it seems, blocking your mail. Your mother wasn't a first gen witch; I hate the term muggle-born, but a squib. And, lastly, you have been an adult in the eyes of wizarding law since Halloween last year. Right?"
"That about sums it up," Harry said.
"So when are you leaving?" she asked.
"What do you mean?"
"It's a simple question. You're an adult now. When are you leaving the Dursleys?"
"You know, I hadn't thought of that. But it wouldn't do me any good to try." Harry replied.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, Dumbledore has people watching the house 24/7, and if I did manage to get away without them finding me, I'd still have to return to school and be sent back here under more scrutiny. The only way I get out now is with my father's invisibility cloak. Besides, I have nowhere else to go..." he said.
"What if you did have somewhere to go? Somewhere they could never find you unless you wanted to be found? Would you go?" she asked.
"In a heartbeat. I don't exactly hate the Dursleys, but I would do almost anything to leave them behind. Why? Do you know someplace?"
"I might," she said, "I would have to talk to my father first."
"Your father?"
"Yes. I would need his permission before going into further detail."
"Ok, I can be patient. Do you think Sirius and Remus could come?"
"Remus? As in Remus Lupin?" she asked, her eyes widening.
"Yes, he was one of my father's best friends and, I guess, an honorary uncle. He taught at Hogwarts in my third year. Taught me the Patronus Charm that year." he replied.
"I believe my father knows him. I'll ask. Can you meet me here the day after tomorrow night? At midnight?" she asked, looking at him.
"Sure, I'll sneak out just like tonight. Good night Mavis."
"Good morning, Harry," She giggled.
He laughed and turned for home.
Looking back over his shoulder, he noticed she had already disappeared. Seeing nothing but a bat flying away, a suspicion started to form.
