Ch. 16: Sacrifices
Adam unlocked the door quickly and opened the door to reveal the room.
The office was a decent size and as they entered, everyone awed at the sight of it. Photos hung all over the wall with different frames that seemed to indicate the year of the photo. Some were filled with black and white photos and there was also a several covered canvases; at least, Maura observed the items that leaned against the bookshelf. There was a mahogany desk and closet was closed; in addition, on a refurbished chair, there was a coat.
It was a room frozen in time.
Adam approached the desk and sighed, "Typical Dani. Old fashioned desk."
"Antique roll top desk," Maura commented. "Usually these have keys."
Adam looked at the key ring and looked at the coat on the chair. He stuck his hand into the coat, rummaging in it until he pulled out a set of keys. He then placed them in the lock and opened the desk. When opening the cover, they observed many papers spread all over the desk. "Definitely a detective's desk," Jane commented.
While Adam and Jane were looking at the desk, Maura wandered to the closet and opened the to see an array of clothing. "She kept her old clothing," Maura wondered aloud. Jane stepped from the desk and looked at the closet, pulling out a duster that appear not to belong to Dani. "Her brother's," Jane heard Maura pointed out.
"Must be," Adam agreed.
"She must have been really close with him…" Maura trailed off then looked back at the canvas, remembering Dani mentioned how she used to sketch. It prompted Maura to approach the canvas and untie the strings that kept the cover over them.
Jane noticed immediately, "Maura, what are you doing?"
"Trying to understand Dani." As she pulled the sheet off, she took in the sight of the oil paintings. One was of an older man with one hand in his pants pocket and his other hand holding the lapel of his jacket. Another portrait was Dani sitting in a chair with a young man standing behind her. Both were had small smiles with mischief in their eyes and Maura knew that these paintings emulated everything.
"What," Maura heard Jane ask.
"My mother always said that a painting can reflect several things," the doctor explained. She gestured toward the man's portrait, "This older man has a serious expression and based on the pose, it was meant to be a serious portrait. This is different from the other portrait which shows of a more relaxed nature. Something against Victorian tradition."
"A rebel?"
Maura nodded then gestured toward the corners of the paintings. "Adam, do you know this signature," the doctor inquired.
Adam looked down and gave a surprised expression. "That's Dani's."
"From a life before," Jane commented before bringing her attention toward the wall covered in photo frames. She was amazed at the sight, with many images, certificates, and awards, prompting her to approach and take a closer inspection. Jane pondered if this was memorabilia until she took a closer observation of the photos and noticed Dani immediately. Jane reached out, taking the frame down and looked at the photo. Dani was standing among a small group of men, wearing a suit and a bowler hat; her eyes then went toward the plaque. "World War I with the troops," Jane read aloud.
"A small group of supernatural troops decided to join the war effort but, Dr. Van Helsing wanted Dani to go over that combat cannot reflect the supernatural world. They could use their abilities like tracking and traversing," Adam explained.
"She has another picture of herself with troops in World War II," Maura added.
"Helped with a map of London for our troops. Spots to shelter at and where to make rendezvous." Adam then gestured to another photo of Dani standing with an older gentleman with a wide smile, "That is Van Helsing."
Jane approached. "She's smiling," Jane pointed out.
"What was he like," Maura inquired.
"Fatherly and smart. I think Dani saw him more of a father than her own. He was her mentor for a long time, teaching her the importance of focusing on her studies. Once he passed away, all the weight of dealing and keeping the order because Van Helsing built everything up." Adam glanced up at the portrait of the two, "Van Helsing believed that it was possible to start again and when I met Dani, it seemed she believed it."
"Believed it? You say it like its past tense."
"After Van Helsing passed, Dani was devastated. It's the price of the immortality: losing the one's you love. When he died, a part of Dani didn't want to deal with any humans-"
"Except Regina," Jane pointed out.
Adam nodded and picked up a journal off the desk, running his fingers through the pages. Maura walked over and examined the papers on Dani's desk, picking up a sheet and reading it aloud, "For many years, I have had my condition under control but, as of recent, my other half has appeared. It has been angry; taunting due to the lack of freedom which has been about over a hundred years."
"Here's another," Jane lifted the other note. "Mortals are not to be part of the situation, but things have fallen apart before they could even start. It seems the discovery of the body traveled enough to make Detective Rizzoli and Doctor Isles targets. Doctor Isles presents a kindhearted nature, almost naïve and yet, I find it comforting strangely. I'm not sure why but I will throw it to being older. There's hope in her eyes. Rizzoli is- Arrogant." Jane scowled with her eyes darting over to Adam who just shrugged.
Maura looked over her girlfriend's shoulder "Jane, there's more," Maura gestured toward the note.
Jane returned her attention. "-or at least, what I thought was arrogance. It is dedication and pride in her work. She wants to help, and I can see that especially working beside her." The detective placed the note down and said, "The Council has known Danielle since the inception. Now that she is discovered to have Hyde, she's considered a danger."
As Adam continued to look through the journal, listening to Jane and Maura until his brows drew together. "Maybe this is why," Adam uttered.
Jane and Maura turned toward Adam who gestured toward the journal. "November 15th, 1884," he started, "Time is not on our side. Henry's ingredients have not arrived, and I've noticed the latest happenings that involve the Board of Governors. One by one, they have been slain and I fear I know why. Edward acts on the subconscious, on the hatred that Henry hides. What am I to do if he cannot be cured?" He turned to the next page, "November 17th, 1884. What I feared has been confirmed by Edward Hyde. I entered Henry's lab, hoping to see him however, I was met with the sight of Edward in my brother's chair. His white shirt covered in blood and sweat stains, almost dishevel, and in his hand was the sword cane. It was unsheathed with the blade glistening from the moonlight. It showed the blood…and his latest victim was his or Henry's fiancé's father he confessed."
"Edward Hyde killed his own future father-in-law," Maura shuddered.
Adam frowned, "Most of society knew how evil and insane Edward Hyde was but, to have an account is-"
"A lot especially since this has been your friend and partner for many years," Jane interrupted.
Adam nodded, "It's a lot and right here, we have Dani's life in our hands."
"She's immortal though," Maura pointed out.
"Who knows what the Council can do. They might have a way to strip Dani's immortality. By exposing what happened in London, we might damn Dani or not."
When Regina received the call, she was shocked. She tried to get in contact with Mama Lorena but, there was no answer. This could mean a lot of things, but the important part was that she needed to go to Council's meeting hall. As she drove, she thought about the last couple of days and how her heart hurt so much, practically sick because of Dani's lie to her.
She knew it was a lie. Dani didn't want to look at her in the eyes when she expressed that she didn't have feelings for Regina. She wasn't sure how to speak to Dani; was it because she felt obligated as a friend, an acquittance as Dani stated, or was it because despite being hurt, she still loved Dani.
She pulled up to the Council's portal and opened it to see an empty lobby. She darted quickly to a side door and opened it to reveal a winding staircase, heading straight downstairs. She descended with the lights changing from modern to almost medieval torches to light the way. Upon reaching the bottom of the staircase, she was met with a wooden desk with a well-known lycan guard.
"Miss Coldwell," he greeted.
"Hello Quintin," Regina greeted back. "I'm here to see Detective Stevenson."
"I'm not supposed to let anyone near her."
"I'm asking for an exception."
Quintin glanced over his shoulder. "I don't think you'll be greeted with former Detective Stevenson," he informed.
Unsure what he meant by this statement, Regina took a torch and walked pass the guard toward the jail cell. As she was walking, she could hear almost two voices talking to each other in soft whispers, prompting her to still.
"Fight back."
"This is the Council. The very thing that I have stood by for year-"
"They are putting us to death possibly. We, you, and me, are considered dangers."
"We aren't."
"Yeah, but all of our defense is in the apartment. We are being set as an example."
"I know…and that's where the Council shows their faults."
"Faults," a scoff came then silence and a small whisper came, "Someone is here."
Realizing she's been caught, Regina approached, calling out gently, "Dani?"
Her eyes took in the sight of the moonlight on Dani's body, prompting Regina to move closer. However, when she approached, she met red eyes instead the normal dark brown eyes; it was those eyes that greeted her. "Why am I not surprised that you're here," Hyde snide.
"Hyde."
"So, we meet at last, Miss Coldwell," Hyde then stood up from their seat and bowed. Once they did their bow, they began to pace in their jail, giving Regina to take in the sight of the individual encasing Dani's body. Even though it seemed Dani was in there, it was evident that Dani wasn't there. Hyde had removed the button shirt with the scars exposed on the skin, leaving Hyde in a tank top and jeans. The pacing reminded Regina of an animal, one that thirst to be released. "Even saying that she doesn't love you can't stop you from coming here," Hyde pointed out.
Regina took in a deep breath. The face and figure were Dani's, but the mannerisms and speech was all Hyde. "She lied," Regina retorted flat.
"You don't seem so sure."
Regina straightened her back, "I'm sure."
"Well, take in the sight of your love because we're going to executed most likely," Hyde hissed. Regina looked away. She can feel her heart hurt and a small bit of doubt was weaseling through, prompting Regina to back away slightly and Hyde noticed immediately, "There it is. Weakness."
Regina's eyes darted up.
"I'm not weak."
"You walked away."
"Because she broke my heart."
"Yet, you are here now," Hyde laughed.
Regina crossed her arms. "Yes, here I am because you and Dani are in a terrible situation."
"But you hate this," Hyde stopped then gestured toward themselves. "I am part of Dani. I am within her."
"But it doesn't mean that you are Dani. You are Hyde, Dani's other half; not better, not worse and I know that Dani can hear this conversation." Regina watched Hyde's eyes darted away from her face, as if listening to someone over their shoulder. The witch stepped forward further, close enough to the cell bars, and whispered, "Dani, please."
Hyde moved closer and for the first time, Regina noticed that Hyde's eyes were no longer the piercing blood red but, a softer hue of red like a sunset. It was in this moment, Regina reached out her hand and took Hyde's hand. They jumped at the touch, unsure how to react to the contact and even Regina could feel Hyde's tension to fade.
"Don't run from me," Regina pleaded.
Hyde flexed the hand, closing their hand. "Letting you go was one of the hardest things I ever had to do," Regina's eyes darted up to see that the red eyes were gone completely.
"Dani." The brown eyes seemed to be fill full of sorrow as Dani released Regina's hand, raising it up to cup her cheek. As she caressed the cheek, Regina leaned into the touch and breathed, "Why did you then?"
"I've been hurt before-," Dani started.
"Mina-"
Dani shook her head, "Mina and I were just a tryst. Dracula and the Lycans were in a turf war and at the time, we were close friends at one time."
Regina looked away, "Then who was it?"
"Her name was Lily. She and I met at an event and she and I started an affair. I did not realize that I was her way to occupy herself until I started to make plans for us." Regina watched as Dani's brows knitted together then scoffed, "I wanted to run away with her, do the whole Boston marriage thing to get away from my problems; from Henry and instead, I lost everything." Dani pulled her hands away, "Edward knew, and he hinted that he…slept with her."
"Your own brother?"
"Edward was never my brother," Dani snapped. Regina flinched at the anger, prompting Dani to look away in shame, "I swore to myself that I would not let romantic dreams take over until…"
Regina felt her heart leap. "Until?"
"Until you," Dani admitted. Her back continued to face Regina as the detective continued, "It's insane to even think an idea like it."
"Why do you believe that," Regina questioned, feeling a burst of courage. "Danielle, I don't care about Hyde or what others say."
"It's not that."
"Then what is it?"
"I'm immortal, Regina! I cannot die," Dani shouted. Tears formed in Dani's eyes, "I've lived beyond my father, brother, Van Helsing, and as time goes, I will live beyond you. We wouldn't be a normal couple; you would be tied to someone never aging as you age and having children would be torture because I would outlive them and the many generations next." Dani sighed, "It's why we have our laws, the Contract because immortality cost a price and I will not take you away from a normal life."
Hearing these words, Regina now understood why Dani didn't want to cross the line. The immortal saw beyond their relationship as a dating situation but, a sign that there could be a life with marriage and children.
It was the aftermath that Dani saw as well.
Regina touched Dani's cheek and despite the bars between them, her forehead touched Dani's. "Do you love me," Regina asked; Dani didn't look up, but the witch could feel Dani squeezing her hands tightly. She brought one of the hands to her lips, kissing the knuckle gently and whispered along the hand, "I know that I'm in love with you and I don't care about who you were in the past. I care about who you are now; that's the Dani I love."
An hour came and gone with Jane, Maura, and Adam arriving at the Council chambers with a large crowd assembled. They practically tore Dani's office, trying to find proof that Dani and Hyde were not dangers to the supernatural world. It derailed the case, and it became clear that everything happening was a political move and Dracula wanted Dani's head.
"How's everything at your end," Jane inquired on the phone. She decided that it would be best to check in with her brother and the others.
"No one has ever heard anyone named Randolf and Xigbar," Frost informed. "The bullets are still being processed but according to Doctor Crane, he is saying that the bullets are made of laced with silver and something else."
"Something else?"
"Yeah, it's really odd," Frost pointed out. "Crane and Harding are trying to break it down further but it's hard to figure it out."
"Damn."
"However, there is a good thing. It's the same substance so same magic that's on the medallions."
"A fucked version of the Hyde formula, trying to keep Lycan shapeshifting under control but causes them to become werewolves," Jane recollected. She let out a huff, thinking aloud, "This person has to be well connected and has great knowledge to know how to gather these items together or has the funds."
"Faust might know."
"True," Jane agreed then noticed the large doors open for everyone to enter. "I got to let you, Frost. Text me an update." With the call concluding, Adam entered first with Jane and Maura and took their seats.
As the crowd took their seats, the Council walked in with everyone taking a seat. Mama Lorna looked over toward where Jane and the others sat and gave them a sympathetic expression. Jane looked around then whispered to Maura, "Where's Regina?"
"I don't know," Maura retorted with worry laced in her voice.
Dorian entered and stood before the crowd, speaking to everyone, "We are here to bring trial to Danielle Stevenson who is Danielle Jekyll in truth, twin sister of Doctor Henry Jekyll and mass murderer Edward Hyde. It has been discovered that the former detective has hidden a deep secret of being a product of her brother's experiment." He turned toward the door, "Bring out the prisoner!"
The doors opened and Dani, in her tank top and jeans with the Twisted Sisters scar peeking out, handcuffed like a criminal. She was placed in front of the Council with a single wooden chair; the guards made her stand before the Council, with Dracula looking down at Dani with disgust. O'Neil placed his feet up on the table, giving a neutral expression with Clayton who peered over his spectacles. Mina's chair was empty and instead, Adam turned his head to see Mina sitting across the aisle and it seemed her attention was elsewhere.
The Creature nudged Jane and the detective looked at him before he gestured toward the direction where Mina was staring at. At the doorway was Regina, prompting Dorian to raise an eyebrow curiously and noted, "Miss Coldwell, an unexpected surprise to see you at the dungeon passageway."
Regina did not speak and instead, she walked up and kissing Dani on her cheek, whispering in her ear. Dani gave a small smile and kissed Regina's forehead; Regina touched her cheek then walked away, prompting her to sit next to Adam. She looked at everyone and whispered, "Please tell me you found something?"
"Possibly," Jane assured, "but we would be opening some old wounds."
Regina nodded, "It's our only chance."
"State your name to the Council," O'Neil barked.
"Danielle Jacqueline Stevenson also known as Danielle Sarah Jekyll," Dani acknowledged.
Dracula stood up and spoke, "You are being charged for hiding your identity from the Council. In doing so, you have violated the Supernatural Contract of 1899 by endangering the supernatural and mortal world." Loud whispers came at the announcement of Dani's charges until there was the sound of the gavel, silencing the room. Dracula ran a hand down his black shirt, smoothing it, "How do you plead?"
"Not guilty." Dracula glowered, sitting down in his chair as Dani cleared her throat, "I've been part of this community since the Contract and the Council's establishment. Abraham Van Helsing trusted me."
"But," O'Neil cut in, "did he know about your condition?"
"Yes, he did."
Dracula looked at Mama Lorna and Clayton, "It's all hearsay."
"It's not," Dani argued. "Van Helsing documented my condition. He thought I didn't know but, I did, and he kept it in his files."
"Which are missing," Dorian added.
Whispers came once more, and Maura looked around to see the pointed looks; the community that Dani was part of were starting to be swayed. The gavel sound came once more and the crowd was silent then Clayton asking, "Let's establish several things before we continue to question about the secrecy. Everyone knows about the chaos that Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde brought upon London, but we do not know your story, Danielle."
"Indeed," Mama Lorna agreed, speaking for the first time. "How did you come to your condition?"
Dani looked down at her shackled hands then glanced over her shoulder; her eyes locking on Jane and the Italian knew what it meant. Jane stood up from her seat and motioned for Maura to hand something over. She stepped forward, "Detective Jane Rizzoli of the Boston Police Department. I was working with Detective Stevenson-"
"Former Detective Stevenson," Dorian corrected.
Jane rolled her eyes but continued, "Danielle documented a journal about her brother's experiment, her time trying to help him until his death." She opened the journal and read the page aloud, "Hyde has destroyed too many lives. The Board of Governors are dead including Henry's own future father-in-law. Hyde slept with the woman I was in love with, proving that I was being used. Everything has fallen apart, and I have no other choice but stop my brother myself. How? I'm not sure yet."
"This doesn't prove much except that she knew," Clayton pointed out.
Mama Lorna raised her hand, "Continue Detective Rizzoli."
Jane nodded. "What was meant to cure my father of ailments turned my brother into the monster he is. I have adjusted Henry's formula and hopefully, I can stop him as someone stronger. This ends tonight." Jane closed the journal and looked at Dani who looked visibly sick.
"Again, Detective, we are not proving anything except that Dani hid her condition. The journal corporates this," Dracula argued.
Regina stood up from her seat, "The journal also proves that Detective Stevenson was doing what she had to do to stop her brother."
"At what cost then? No one knows what happened to Henry Jekyll except of a fire burning his residence and his body never found," O'Neil argued. "The author of the novel said he took his own life. What is the truth?"
"Maybe we should have Hyde speak for itself," Dracula added.
"What do you mean," Regina questioned, watching as two guards approached Dani, holding her down her seat. She struggled with Adam standing up quickly, trying to approach but was blocked. Mama Lorna stood up from her seat, walking to Dani with a small vial in her hand. "Mama, please don't."
Mama bowed her head, "I'm sorry, child." She stood in front of Dani who stopped struggling; they locked eyes with Mama signaling them to let go of Dani. When they released Dani, Mama handed the vial to the former detective. "This will bring out Hyde and keep you here; completely separating the two of you for the time being," Mama explained.
"Mama, it's too dangerous especially with her immortality link. The Twisted Sisters decreed this."
"It's okay, love," Dani assured. Regina turned her attention toward Dani who could hear Hyde shouting in the back of her head. Are you insane, Hyde shouted, we are going to die! This might kill us.
"It has to be done." She then lifted the vile to her lips and the burning sensation going down her body. Maura watched as Dani dropped to the ground immediately, making the doctor stand up from her seat and push pass the guards. "Give her room," Maura ordered as Dani screamed out in pain with the crowd gasping.
Her body was reaching its breaking point; it felt as if her body was on fire, her bones almost wanting to break and rip out of her body. Suddenly, Maura noticed a black cloud forming around Dani's thrashing body as did Jane. The detective grabbed her girlfriend quickly as the black cloud split from Dani's body in a rapid motion with screams filling the room.
Two, Jane realized. I heard two screams.
The black cloud started to stretch to the other side of the room; a small thread of itself attached to Dani's back that was glowing green. "The mark of the Twisted Sisters," Regina muttered as the glow ripped from Dani's body with the final thread breaking. With a final scream, the cloud shifted and changed into a human body with red eyes and the glow of the scar; both were still on the floor.
Dracula and the rest of the Council stood up from their seats, Dorian moved to the back of the wall, some audience members had step back except Mina, and Regina, Jane, and Maura were unsure which figure to approach. However, Mama Lorna approached the black first who moved finally with an attempt to rise from the ground but dropped. Regina rushed over to Dani, who was also struggling, and helped her up to reveal a pale and pain expression on the detective.
"Are you okay," Regina fretted.
Maura crouched down and grabbed Dani by the wrist. She then looked up at her girlfriend with confusion, "I can't get a proper read on her pulse."
"What do you mean," Regina gaped. Her eyes darted back to Dani who seemed to be weaker in each moment. "Mama, what is wrong with her," the young witch questioned her mentor.
Mama continued to gaze down at the black figure. "A forbidden potion to separate the two halves and it appears that both have a strong will to live. However,…" she let her wrinkled finger glide along the scar mark causing the black figure and Dani to react; the figure hissing in pain and Dani touching her shoulder. "It is apparent who made the immortality deal."
The figure attempted to stand once more, ignoring its pain as it bowed to the Council. "We meet at last," the figure spoke, their voice almost similar to Dani's voice.
"It worked," Regina awed.
Dani stood up from the ground and stared at the figure, "Hello Hyde."
"Danielle," Hyde greeted back before bringing their attention back to the Council. "Here I am. Waiting for your stupid questions."
Dracula crossed his arms in front of his chest. "You will answer our questions for your lives hang in the balance," the vampire threatened.
"She told you the tru…" Hyde paused then tried, "She told you the tru- fuck why can't I say it?"
"Part of the potion is to release the inhibitions. To speak the truth," Mama Lorna explained.
Dani paled while Dracula smirked. "Let's reveal the secrets," Dracula announced, approaching, and grabbing Hyde from the neck and tossing them aside into a chair. The vampire then hovered and questioned, "How did Henry Jekyll died?"
Hyde's red eyes glanced over at Dani who bowed her head. Silence hung over them and Dracula looked up at the crowd, "What we have here is a danger to our society. A liar who lived among us and used our trust. She judged us and all we have is a killer here."
"You don't know us," Hyde rebuked.
Dorian chuckled, "Like you've been telling the truth to us? Your brother's story didn't end the way it was written." Maura watched as Dani squeezed the chair, looking up to the ceiling. She nudged Jane who follow Maura's gaze.
"It's his legacy," Hyde hissed.
"You killed him," Dracula accused. "That's why you are so adamant to hide the truth. You were the monster in the story!"
Dani closed her eyes in shame. This must stop, Jane thought. She needs to tell them the truth about what really happened that night. "Enough," Jane shouted suddenly.
The room became silent, Adam's eyes widened, and Dracula turned with his wings revealing, "You dare command me, mortal?"
Jane started to step forward until she felt a tight grip on her wrist. She glanced back and took in the sight of a concern Maura. The detective touched Maura's hand in reassurance and pulled away, stepping toward Dracula. "She's not a murderer," Jane claimed.
"You don't even know her," O'Neil argued.
"That's where you wrong." Jane opened the journal toward the last of the pages. She took a quick glance at Dani and mouthed a simple sorry, "Edward Hyde has taken over my brother. He takes over Henry's body whenever he wants to and it's for vindictive and evil ways. I have modified my brother's formula and have injected the same amount my brother injected in himself…I know he will return to our family home then I will confront him…this maybe my last entry."
"That doesn't prove anything," Dracula started.
Jane raised her hand, "It's been several days since that night…I don't know why I write in this journal or keep it. My brother's notes are gone or at least, I believe it is. The confrontation that happened between us caused a fire and our home burned down with Henry's corpse…yes, corpse. My brother is dead, and I killed him because he wanted Edward stopped. Now, I live with its twin within me with no cure. This is my burden to bear and the sacrifice that has been made."
Jane then closed the journal and glanced over at Dani with her head in her hands and Hyde looked away. "Dani is only guilty of is putting others before herself," Jane explained. "Sacrificing everything for others."
