Scene Change: Fairy's Garden, Training Grounds, Year x762
POV Rep
I now know the pains of being an older sibling.
Back in my previous life before this, I was the youngest of four. Completely unaware of the pains of having to deal with caring for someone younger. I really wish I was still ignorant of this, but I now know.
And it's all because of-
"Hey Teach!" a four year old Cana Alberona, who had inserted herself into my daily life. She wandered into the forest just a few weeks ago while I was doing my now annual vulcan culling. "What're you doing?"
"Training," Like usual, though I just started training in Zero form a few minutes ago. "I just finished my warm up, so time to get into it."
"Why are you always training? It's all you ever do." Cana said, pouting like the child she currently is before smiling a bit and asking. "Can I train with you today?"
No, but you're just gonna keep nagging me until I let you so-
"No," Oh nevermind, Laxus is back from the job he took with Macao and Wakaba. "You wouldn't be able to keep up, you're too weak, wait until you're older."
Pot calling the kettle black there Laxus, you're only older by a few years and started out at about the same age only off by a couple years. Still though he's not wrong, if Cana tried to train with me at full throttle at such an advanced age she'll only cause difficulties for herself later in life.
"No I'm not!" Really the only reason I took Laxus on as a student was that he already showed signs of being able to keep up, despite only being six at the time. "You're just too strong! Of course I can't keep up with you, but that doesn't mean I can't train with Teach."
Does she think Laxus is stronger than me or something? That's probably cause I made sure to hold back when training her, she might have made that assumption because I always hold back when fighting her and Laxus and she's never seen me spar with Macao and Wakaba.
"I still have to train myself, Cana." I find myself answering emphasizing the word and using Zero's tone instead of X's like I have been with her for the past week. "I've been neglecting my own training for a while in order to better train you. I have to at least use today for myself so I don't get weaker."
That last part was a lie, as a cyborg I never grow weaker no matter how long I go without training. I can only ever grow stronger, but they don't have to know that, and that same thing doesn't apply to them. I don't want them to get any bad habits from me like not training for long periods of time and thus growing weaker instead of stronger, I made that mistake in my last life and don't want them to make the same one.
Heck, in this one I'm still kinda making the same mistake. I could've mastered Model Z by now but spent too much time working on Laxus .
"Oh," Cana said, looking down at her feet, looking a little sad. "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"It's fine Cana," I said using X's tone again, seriously X and Zero complement each other in practically everything. "Besides, I'm still going to train you and Laxus later after I finish my own."
At that statement Laxus looks surprised, he probably thought I was going to train with him.
"Sorry Laxus," I said after turning to him too. "I'll be drawing out a lot more today than usual and I don't want to risk hurting you permanently so we're not going to spar yet, you can practice with Cana until I'm done."
And at that statement Laxus looked a little upset, I can understand honestly. When I was his age I would always be a little short with others when they weren't at the same level as me, thank goodness I grew out of that after I started tutoring.
"Laxus," I said his name using Zero's voice as a warning before switching to X again. "I know Cana isn't as strong as you, but you can still grow stronger even when training with those weaker than you, I'm just not training with you guys right now not because it won't let me grow but because I don't want to hurt you too badly."
After I said that, Laxus looked a little better, though he did look scared when I used Zero's voice. Probably because I only ever use Zero's tone when I get upset with them, like a disciplinary device.
"Got it mom." There he goes again with that, I gave up on trying to stop him calling me that but it still grates on my nerves. At least Cana calls me by the nickname Laxus gave me before he started calling me mom. "I'll train with Cana, but just you wait I'll get strong enough to make you go all out with me!"
That's my boy.
Wait, "my boy"? Why did I think that?
Nodding my head at Laxus while using the motion to get the thought out of mind, smiling in pride at the little brat. I turn around and get to my own training.
Summoning the Z-saber and switching its power source from my Sunlight energy and internal power source provided by Model Z to my ether core, I begin slashing and dashing at full speed, making sure to keep control of the dashes, sometimes changing to just stepping using pure physical ability to do a charge dash and alternating the way the Z-saber is positioned while I dash to keep up my guard.
I noticed whenever I switched power sources, the Z-saber would change from a light blue-green color, to a pure green color. Probably due to the different energy being used, but other than the color the properties of the Z-saber never changed with the power source. Its shape, length, and cutting ability were all the same, even the stun mode didn't change. Did the 'variant weapons system' also adapt the other biometals' weapons to fit the power source?
Either way, if I can use all of the weapons with my ether core as the sole power source, that would make for wonderful training. My ether core just like the rest of my body can only grow stronger, and while I can 'overtrain' it and thus make it unusable for a while. It'll always recover stronger than it was before, if the Z-saber is anything to go by it looks like the weapons are compatible with ethernano.
As I was practicing my motions, I heard using Zero's advanecd hearing Laxus and Cana sparring. They were really getting into it too, I could practically feel the frustration Cana had everytime she shouted when Laxus most likely just tanked her Card Magic attacks. He was probably using that Counter shield technique I told him about that I ripped off from Pokemon of all things, one where you break dance while spewing out a stream of elemental magic to create a shield against ranged attacks.
That reminds me, I should probably start practicing that.
Quickly changing my movements, drawing on Zero's battle experience once more, I start jumping more often, sometimes using the dashes to make the distance both forwards and upwards greater. As I incorporate the movements I start moving the Z-saber in a downward slashing movement more often, as if I'm aiming for the head.
After getting used to the simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar movement, I start to do my favorite attack from Zero.
Time to speen.
Acting on Zero's instincts, I use my dash jets while mid-air to push my body in a certain way while I slash downwards creating a spinning movement. Thus doing Zero's legendary mid-air buzzsaw attack.
I always wondered why Zero, and by extention Vent or Aile, never got dizzy while doing that. Turns out it's because of the helmet, it makes it so that they and me now after receiving the biometals, don't perceive motion in the same way as a normal human and thus don't feel vertigo in any way so long as we're wearing our helmet.
After successfully doing the legendary attack a few times, I start to move faster trying to figure out how to do it while using my newly created constant dash, a technique that allows me to basically as the name suggests, always be in a state of dashing. It's pretty awkward to do but nothing a little practice can't fix.
As I sped up more and more, I noticed that Laxus and Cana stopped their sparring, the noises stopped. They're probably taking a break, I always stress the importance of pacing yourself to them after all.
I'll take a break myself after a few more runs around the field, even if I don't actually need it. I still need to set a good example for the kids after all, I don't want them to think it's alright to hurt yourself in training by doing too much.
While I finished up the last few runs, I heard Macao and Wakaba coming into the field and asking Laxus something, to which point he responded. I couldn't really make out exactly what they were saying since I was still focussed on the exercises but made note that they were here nonetheless.
After doing one last run around of the field, I try to combine the buzzsaw slash with a move I made myself by taking the charge dash and using it in midair to create a bastardization of Model H's air dash. I failed at the movement and Zero like X didn't really have experience in trying to fix himself in midair after being launched but luckily all those accidents while I experimented with X's Buster came in handy.
Looks like I can't do a buzzsaw with an air dash since the buzzsaw uses the dash jets to be successful in the first place.
After landing, albeit on my hands due to the loss of control, I turned to where I last heard the group talking and saw Laxus and Cana staring at me wide eyed, with Macao and Wakaba looking at them as if they heard the funniest joke in the world. What happened over there?
Walking over, it seemed that Macao and Wakaba noticed me coming, and fixed their expressions, Laxus and Cana still looking at me like I was some sort of alien. Though I vaguely heard Cana say something. Now that I think about it, that was the same way that Makarov, Macao and Wakaba looked at me when I gave them that whole Take Over lecture.
I still don't know how Laxus managed to get a pen and notepad to this day, was it some type of magic or something like Requip? I mean if the fanfics I've read were anything to go by it's possible to use them like Gilgamesh's "Gate of Babylon".
Thoughts for later, for now I've got kids to teach.
Scene Change: Same time and Place (Ten minutes ago)
Laxus POV
When Mom said that he didn't want to risk hurting me, I thought he was being condescending since I'm younger than him.
Turns out he wasn't, he was really just worried about hurting me and right in front of me is the proof.
It started when I heard the little explosions that came with Mom's usual dash techniques, but they were a little weird. They were almost silent and I could barely hear it.
I wanted to watch, but I couldn't since me and the little girl were sparring while we waited for Mom to finish. At least until I pulled out the Countershield, I still can't believe that dancing of all things could make my magic so much stronger. When Mom told me about it I thought she was going insane until I actually pulled it off after a bit of practice. Now it's a mainstay of my favorite moves to use, especially since everyone in the guild looked really funny when I did it for the first time in front of them.
Seeing that Cana was getting too tired to do any real spells anymore and resorted to literally just throwing the cards at me, I called the spar off, remembering what Mom said about training too much and not wanting Cana to hurt herself.
After doing that I noticed just how tired I am too, guess Mom was right. Like always. Even training with someone weaker than you can make you stronger.
After me and Cana decided to take a break, I turned to see how Mom was training since it was apparently dangerous enough for me not to train with her. And I managed to catch it, right when he decided to start really going all out.
I'm really glad he decided to not have me help him out, it would've just been like one of the tests he does with Macao and Wakaba except worse because I don't know how to deal with that.
Mom was doing this weird slash thing, where he would do a down slash while dashing nothing really special until he started jumping too. Then he started spinning.
This was probably where he got the idea of the Countershield from, it was the same just from a different angle. He probably told me to do breakdancing in order to make the attack easier and to confuse my opponents.
He was spinning like a buzzsaw, multiple times after every jump he took. Three times a lap, and it didn't look like he was slowing down at all. If anything he was getting faster and doing that attack more.
By the time I realized I should've gotten back to sparring with Cana, I looked up and saw that Macao and Wakaba are here. Looking amused while watching Mom.
"You guys see what me and Wakaba help test now right?" Said Macao looking at me after he noticed I saw him.
"Yeah," I said, still trying to get over just how strong my mom is. "And I really hope he never uses that on me."
"This was the way he trained before you came along, you know." I heard Wakaba say, looking like he was trying not to laugh. "He would train with this kind of stuff every single day, he only really slowed down so he could teach you."
I guess Wakaba has a good reason to laugh, I probably looked a little funny. I mean I just realized how crazy my Mom is, and he used to do this every day. No wonder Macao and Wakaba are so strong, they have to deal with this!
"And I thought that you and Teach were as strong as each other." I heard Cana say, why would she think that? I always told her that Mom trained me, Macao and Wakaba. "Boy was I wrong."
How does he do it? How is he so strong and yet able to come up with all these new techniques out of nowhere? He said he's still training to be able to join a guild, but with how strong he is, he could easily join any guild in all of Fiore! Just what kind of guild is he planning to join!?
Honestly at this point, if he doesn't join a guild yet he'll become the strongest member in an instant once he joins them. The only mages I know who can move as fast as Mom did are Gramps and Gildarts.
"Hey Rep, still crazy strong as ever huh?" Asked Macao, he's probably so casual because he's used to it. "I haven't seen you do stuff like that in a while, are the kids finally able to keep up?"
"No, I just had them train with each other while I got some serious training in for myself." Ugh, why am I so weak!? I've been training with Mom for two years now, I should be able to keep up with him at least a little. "I'll be training them after I take a little break. Need to recharge so I'll sunbathe for a bit."
Oh, yeah that 'using sunlight' for his attacks thing. I still don't get how he does that, does he absorb magic power from the sun? Not to mention, how does magic eat for you? I really don't get Mom's magic, but it's really powerful so I guess it's fine.
"A-are you going to have us do that?" I heard Cana ask, shaking at the idea. Why is she so scared, that would be awesome! "Cause I don't think I'd be able to keep up, like Laxus said I'm too weak."
"Why would I have you do that?" Asked Mom, tilting his head like usual. "For one, you guys don't use swords so you'd have no use for it. And you don't have the types of magic to even do that, even if you did use swords."
He didn't say he wouldn't, just that there's no reason to. Should I learn how to use a sword? Because that attack was so cool and I want to do it too!
"Can you teach me how to use a sword then?" I asked, wanting to be more like mom. "I want to know how to do that too."
Mom did that thing where he thinks a lot again, he covered his mouth with his hand. He always does that when thinking a lot, like when he's trying to teach me and Cana or when Gramps asks him something about Take Over.
"It would be better if you didn't try to learn how to use a sword." He finally said after a while, having the same look as when he taught me the Countershield. "There isn't a weapon out there that can keep up with your magic and you've already advanced this far without one, it's better to continue without that so you don't get too spread thin."
He's probably right, if I specialized in weapons I might be able to learn that. But I use my fists and lightning magic to fight, so I should focus on that instead of trying to learn other things.
"What about you though?" Asked Cana, a look of confusion on her face. "You don't specialize, so why can't Laxus do what you do?"
It's a good question, but knowing Mom he already has an answer.
"Because unlike Laxus my magic's main strength is just that." He said while taking on that lecture pose he always does when teaching us. "I can copy and learn from my opponents, which is the basis for the majority of my skills, each of my different forms being made to more specialize in a specific skill. Like this form using a sword, or my X form which you haven't seen being specialized in ranged combat. I have the advantage of not having to worry about being unable to master the magics I learn as a result of having transformations that put me on par with those who do since they-"
Mom went into lecture mode again and ended up spending the whole day talking about magic specialties and how it's ok to learn the basics of several magics but to only learn one in an advanced way. I took notes like usual using Requip to pull out a new notebook and pen. I usually have to write down everything Mom says when he gets like this, and have several others that are already full from his other lectures. It's hard to remember everything he says.
This was one of the reasons why he's the only teacher I will ever need, he always has a lot to teach me about something, even if it's something small like why I shouldn't learn advanced forms of multiple magics.
Still though, to think that Mom still has other transformations to master with all of them being strong in their own ways different from the ones I've seen. And he hasn't even mastered this form yet either. I wonder what the form that lets him use lightning will be like, whatever it is knowing Mom it'll be amazing.
Scene Change: Fairy's Garden, Rep's home (Cave), two hours after Rep started his lecture
Rep POV.
I really need to stop just randomly going into lectures, this was the fourth time this week.
By the time I stopped my lecture it had already been close to sunset, so I sent the kids home with Macao and Wakaba who had stopped by to see how I was doing. Of course I did this after cooking some Bear meat for the kids since they didn't get to eat lunch, HUD has a lot of good info and that includes cooking techniques. Luckily I have some experience from before I reincarnated so I was able to cook just fine. Though it did take a bit of practice and I couldn't really eat it myself so I couldn't check the taste either.
But if the way they wolfed it down was any indicator then it was pretty good. Feels good to have someone appreciate my efforts.
Still though, I've been teaching Laxus and Cana stuff outside of training and magic. Maybe I should just give the kids 'an education' on top of my training, since at this point I've already done that who knows how many times. Something to work on in my free time though, it'd be easier if I have a-
'HUD, do I have a note taking system?' at the thought instead of giving me a beam of info, at least not that alone, but something that looks like a notepad appeared in front of me. Cool, something to do while I sunbathe. And something that I can spend the jewels I earned from the jobs that Makarov gave me. He kept giving me more after that first one, though only the ones that are close to the expiration date.
I'll ask Macao and Wakaba to tell me where I can buy the supplies. Hope Makarov doesn't mind me doing this, especially since I've had an eidetic memory as a side effect from becoming a cyborg. I literally remember everything from since I came to this world with perfect clarity, this will come in handy when lecturing the kids on history and literature. I wonder what the books are like in this world, the anime never really got into that other than Lucy wanting to be an author.
Maybe I could even publish something- HAH, as if.
From what I could tell in the anime, it took Lucy years to make something she deemed ok to publish. And that was with help from Levi who as shown in canon reads a lot and even has magic based on that, so unless I choose to plagarise the authors of my world I wouldn't be able to do anything.
And even then, I don't remember everything from my previous life with perfect clarity. I can barely even remember my mother's voice let alone all the fiction stories I've read.
Luckily I already had the foresight to have HUD scan my memories for Fairy Tail and everything I know to have a back-up to fall on if I forget anything. I still have to ask HUD for it though since it isn't always automatic. It still sometimes reminds me of things whenever I get an 'off track' thought about canon like thinking the Edolas King and the Fiore king were the same person and not Makarov being the Edolas king.
You know what, 'HUD, scan all of my memories from my past life. I DO NOT want to ever forget my family.' I really should've done that a long time ago.
Though this will take a long time, it's a lifetime's worth of information after all. Luckily I'm going to sleep soon and I don't need HUD to keep a constant vigil anymore. The vulcan know better than to attack me in my sleep now and all the wild animals in the forest can't get past my traps.
For now though, before going to sleep in a couple hours I may as well start on the lesson plan for Laxus and Cana. Let's see, Laxus is about eight now and Cana is Four. I can have Cana start on basic arithmetic like adding and subtract- actually no that wouldn't work she's already advanced enough to know that due to her magic so muiltiplication and division, as for Laxus he should be around that level too, but just in case I'll test both of them.
As for history, I'll just use their rest day to read up at the Magnolia library. Do I have enough to buy some Gale Force Reading glasses? That should speed up my reading speed a lot, maybe I could even use the variant weapons system to copy the enchantment.
They definitely have no concept for science, I know that much due to Fiore's over-reliance on magic. Luckily I am literally a living science-fiction, or I guess "science" since it's not fiction anymore, trope. So, I literally just need to ask HUD for some help.
Oh, judging by the speed of that info burst, it seems HUD is more than willing to help me. Thanks bud, looking forward to working with ya. Still have to study all that info though, and HUD can't just beam everything into my head. I do not want to know what happens when you beam literal centuries worth of a scientific revolution into one person's brain no matter how enhanced it is. So normal studying, yay.
So much to do, and so little time. Thank goodness for my cybernetically enhanced memory, cause this cramming session is gonna be a long one.
