Gregory had just sat down to eat breakfast when Chica and Roxy came running in.
"Gregory! Roxy just had the best idea! Tell him, tell him!" She shook Roxy's arm a bit, and the wolf chuckled.
"So remember how we were talking about the rematch?"
"Yes, I can remember three days ago." Gregory said sarcastically, a smirk on his face.
"Well, this is your official challenge. You, me, tonight, an hour after closing." Roxy had a toothy grin on her face, but no malice in her eyes.
"Oh you're on, Wolf." Gregory's smirk grew.
He would show her who was the best on the track.
Everyone was gathered in the Raceway. Roxy and Gregory were in their go-karts getting ready while Monty and Chica convinced Freddy that this was safe. Moon sat nearby, observing the track and karts.
"It's going to be fine Freddy, he put a helmet on and everything!" Chica said.
"Yeah, the construction is almost finished anyways." Monty added.
"I know, but what if something happens? What if the—"
"Fazbear," Monty said, "They're going to race, the kid is going to beat Roxy—"
"I heard that, Gator!"
"—and then we're all going to go to bed and you're going to feel silly for worrying so much. Okay?"
"Okay, okay. Thank you, Monty."
Gregory started his kart and the engine's rumble reverberated around the track. "Alright! You ready to lose, Roxy?"
"Oh, bring it on kid!" They grinned at each other. "Remember. it's Mario Kart rules. First to finish three laps wins. Moon is keeping track." With that, Moon stood up and grabbed hold of the checkered flag sitting next to them.
"On your mark…" Its low voice carried strong.
"Get set…" Roxy revved her engine a bit, showing off.
"Go!" They were off.
Gregory flew across the starting line, air whipping past his face. The turns were sharp and tight, especially with Roxy right next to him. The sides of the go-karts bumped together and Gregory did his best to course correct.
They sped across the finish line at the same time, marking one lap. Everyone was cheering, but Gregory did his best to tune them out and focus on the race. (The go-kart engines were loud enough to make that easy.) Roxy's kart shot forward and she took the lead, staying a few feet ahead of him.
Second lap down.
Foot pressed flat on the back pedal, Gregory begged whatever deity was in charge of go-karting to make this thing go faster.
Coming upon the finish line the final time, Roxy looked back at him. "HAH! That's what you get for challenging the racing master, Roxanne Wo—" Roxy was cut off as she rammed into the wall surrounding the track. She tumbled halfway out of the go-kart as Gregory sped past.
He crossed the finish line and the crowd erupted into cheers. Everyone quickly ran out of the stands, Chica and Monty rushing to help Roxy up and Freddy barreling towards Gregory. He was scooped up into Freddy's arms and spun around.
"Congratulations Superstar! That was amazing!"
"Thanks Freddy!" Gregory couldn't help giggling, giddy with adrenaline.
"Not bad Squirt." Roxy was walking over, flanked by her bandmates. "But you got lucky, I'll beat you next time."
"You sure about that?" Gregory said.
"Yeah Wolf, you've lost to this dude twice now." Monty added.
"Oh shut up you." Roxy said good naturedly.
Chica gasped. "I just had the best idea! We still have some time before it gets late late, so what if we all raced!"
"Heck yeah! You and me Wolf, I'll show you how bad at this you really are."
"Sure you will, Monty. Anyone else want in? Moon, Freddy?"
Moon shook its head. "Racing isn't my speed, I prefer to watch. Besides, I promised I'd tell Sun everything that happens tonight."
"I would also prefer to watch you all, I don't even have a helmet."
"Freddy, we're robots." Roxy said.
"The principle still stands!"
"Sure, sure. You in kid?" Was that even a question?
"Hell yeah I am!" Gregory said before jumping out of Freddy's arms and running to the go-kart, ignoring his shocked gasp.
"Are you sure you're okay Freddy? You seem nervous." The bear looked at Moon.
"I am fine, just worried about there being so many go-karts on the track at once."
Lanterns illuminated the old, burnt Pizzaria while Lux and Vanessa worked on the trap. Rope converted the tables and a large pile of nails covered the checkered flooring. The two employees were currently on their hands and knees, picking up as many of the nails as they could.
"'I can help build the frame!' she said, 'I've done DIY projects before!' she said."
"Oh shut up Lux."
"I kid, I kid. Though maybe let me finish this up, you can finish prepping the blackout curtains." Lux dumped vir handful of nails into a plastic container.
"Aye aye Captain." Vanessa added what she had gathered to the container and went over to the blackout curtain. It was draped over a couple of old folding chairs and in the middle of being cut to size.
Sounds of hammers and scissors filled the room for a while before Lux bridged the silence.
"I left some letters at home."
"What?" Vanessa looked up from the fabric.
"Some letters for… I know that we've got this all planned out and it's going to work but on the off chance that something goes wrong…" ve gripped the hammer tighter "It's just a back up plan. Sorry, I talk when I'm nervous."
"You're good, I get it. Sorry for getting you wrapped up in this though."
"Are you joking? You gave me waaaay too many chances to back out. Just wanted to make sure all my bases were covered."
"I get that." Vanessa stared down at the fabric again. "It would suck dying two weeks before Christmas though."
"Shit, is it that close already? I haven't even started shopping." Lux groaned.
Vanessa laughed a bit. "Hey, it's never too late to start. You can probably get some pretty good deals on stuff now."
"Maybe."
"Alright! That should be the frame done. I'll start gathering the rope, you bring this in." Lux said.
"Roger that." Vanessa picked up the wooden frame and carried it into the next room, setting it right in front of William. Running back, she grabbed the blackout curtain and threw it over top, effectively cutting off any vision he would have had.
"Alright Willy, let's do this."
"You almost done?"
"Yep! Just gotta tie one more knot… Who knew that Boy Scouts would actually pay off one day!" Vir laughed at vir own joke.
"Cool, I'm going to— I'm going to go make some phone calls. I'll be right back."
"Gotcha!"
The best cell reception was next to the dingy elevator. Before pulling out her phone though, she grabbed the Fazwatch that Freddy had let her borrow for the night.
"Freddy? You there?"
"Yes, I am here. Is it time?"
"Almost. Everything should be going according to plan, but be ready to run if anything goes south."
"Understood. Good luck, Vanessa."
"Thanks." She put the Fazwatch back in her pocket and took a deep breath. That was the easy part.
Vanessa dialed the number and listened to the phone ring, staring at Sammy's contact photo.
"Hello! Sorry I'm not available at the moment, but I'll try and get back to you ASAP! Leave a message after the tone!" Vanessa felt a small weight lift off of her shoulders. This would definitely be easier as a message.
"Hey Sammy, just calling to let you know that I… I love you. You've been with me for so long and I couldn't have asked for a better friend or partner. You mean the world for me and I—" She was starting to choke up. "I love you so, so much. Uh that's, that's all." Vanessa hung the call up and wiped at her face, scrubbing away any doubts she had. It sucked, it was terrifying, but she had to do this. If she didn't at least try and stop him now, who knows who else he could hurt.
Vanessa walked back to the room swiftly, determination seeping into her very soul.
They were in positions, everything was set up, it was time. Vanessa clutched the small remote tighter in her hands and gave Lux a nod. Ve sat back against the side of the charging tube and Vanessa approached it. Swiftly she walked to frame and pulled the curtain off.
William was staring back at her and she met his gaze in full.
"Alright Willy, on a scale of one to ten, how much do you want to kill me?" William banged on the door. "I'll take that as at least a five." She walked back across the room, standing right in front of the door.
Deep breaths.
They had practiced this, they had prepared, it was going to be fine. Vanessa took one final breath, focused on the beating of her heart, and opened the charging tube.
"Come and get me motherfucker."
