WHAT IF? - SEASON 6 EPISODE 7C - CANDY GIRL (PART 2)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I´M RELEASING THREE EPISODES AT THE SAME TIME TODAY, SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU READ ALL OF THEM. AS ALWAYS, A HUGE THANKS GOES OUT FROM ME FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

1. Int. Cafeteria. Day.

Angie eating lunch with her BFF Jenny, but her eyes are more fixed on Jordan and Maya, than they are on anything else.

Angie:

She´s totally wrong for him! But, if he has to find out for himself, then I´ll let him host his own funeral!

Jenny:

You´re just jealous, because he chose to ask her out and not you.

Angie:

No, I´m not! Just so you know, I don´t even like him anymore!

Jenny looks her in the eyes and can see easily, that Angie is lying.

Jenny:

Yeah and when I come home from school, it´s to find out that my parents have all of a sudden become millionaires!

Angie:

Okay, so maybe I am the tiniest bit envious of her! It´s just not fair! I was the one, who put in the work with him and made him comfortable around girls. You remember what he was like before.

Jenny:

Like almost all of the other boys in our grade are, wasn´t he?

Angie:

Plus, we pretty much made a verbal agreement, back when we were 11, that I would be his first girlfriend! You´d think he would honor that, at least!

Jenny:

I don´t think such an agreement is valid in a court of law! Not in a legally binding way, anyway! Look, if it bothers you that much, then just tell him how you feel!

Angie:

Then it´s bound to come up, that I tried lying to Maya to scare her off from talking to him! Why can´t I just go back to being a kid again and not have to think about these stupid feelings, I have for him?

Jenny:

No one told you that growing up would be easy, did they?

Angie shakes her head in agreement.

OPENING CREDITS

2. Int. Liberty´s Apartment. Day.

Liberty is showing JT her new apartment, which looks like a nice place, by the looks of it. She looks pretty happy with it too.

Liberty:

It´s only a sub-let for six months, but in my case that´s perfect, since I won´t have to spend money on new furniture and I don´t plan on living here any longer than that anyway.

JT:

Who would let a stranger live in a sweet place like this?

Liberty:

An archeologist, who´s off on a dig somewhere in South America.

JT:

Like Indiana Jones?

Liberty:

Only with a hundred percent less whip using and a hundred percent more extremely slow digging, where you´re very careful not to break anything that´s really old!

JT:

They probably don´t get all of the pretty girls either, do they?

Liberty:

I´ve seen a picture of him and based on that, I´m guessing no!

They laugh a little and take a seat in "her" new sofa.

JT:

It looks like you´re set up nicely here. Which only begs one question: When are you going to tell me, what happened with you at Yale?

Liberty:

It just wasn´t working out.

JT:

I don´t believe that for a second! It´s me, Liberty! You know that I´d never judge you for anything, you´ve done.

Liberty takes a moment to think about it, before telling him.

Liberty:

JT, two weeks ago, my parents had to be called in to make a decision on whether I should be admitted to a mental hospital or not.

JT looks shocked at what he´s hearing.

JT:

You´re kidding, right?

Liberty:

I wish, that I were. Jimmy found me in our bathroom crying uncontrollably, because I simply couldn´t handle the constant pressure of what my life had become anymore. The first time it happened ...

JT:

You mean that it happened more than once?

Liberty:

It happened twice. As I was saying, the first time I tried my best to shake it off, only it turned out to be the worst thing, I could have done. The second time was a few days later and that was the knockout punch, I wasn´t going to get up from right away, as they say.

JT:

Why didn´t you want to tell anyone?

Liberty:

Because I wanted them all to think, that I had it under control, like I´ve always had. Asking for help has never been easy for me and the more independent I started feeling from living on my own, the worse it kept getting.

They look one another in the eyes and she´s glad to see, that he isn´t looking at her with pity or disdain.

JT:

You´re asking for help now, so that´s the main thing. Are you seeing a shrink?

Liberty:

I plan on starting with one next week.

JT:

That´s good. Liberty, you know that I don´t care if you´re a waitress in Toronto´s sleaziest bar or the president of the entire country, as long as you´re happy, don´t you?

She smiles at his sweet words.

Liberty:

Yeah, I do. I´m not sure that my family would be all that happy with it though, if I didn´t at least go back and finish college.

JT:

They´re not you, are they? Now, I know that I´m just a high school dropout, who´s only chance of going to college is if the general IQ of the human population all of a sudden drops radically. But, even I know that if you let someone else make all of your decisions for you, you´ll just end up leading a miserable and sad life because of it.

Liberty:

I forgot how to relax, that was the main issue. All of the time, from the moment I woke up to the time I went to bed, I felt like I had to be the most perfect version of myself all of the time.

JT:

And you´re wondering, why you had a nervous breakdown? No one can live a life like that, not in the long run anyway! Luckily for you, you´re in the presence of a master, when it comes to the artform of slacking off, pushing all of the things you should have done to the back of your head, where they will eventually be forgotten, all so you can get away with doing absolutely nothing!

Liberty clearly looks glad to be back in JT´s company again.

Liberty:

Do you think, you could teach me?

JT:

It´s never too late to learn, my young Padawan!

Liberty:

JT, you´re only two weeks older than me!

JT:

I´m sticking to what I said!

The door phone buzzes and Liberty gets up to answer it.

Liberty:

Yeah?

Manny (on the door phone):

Guess who I brought with me?

Emma (on the door phone):

Hi, Liberty!

Liberty:

Hi, Emma! I´ll buzz you in.

She presses the button, so they can get in.

JT:

Are you ready to start learning how to have fun again?

Liberty:

I think, I am!

She smiles to herself, glad to be back to what she knows and is comfortable with.

3. Int. Angie´s Room. Evening.

Angie is still in a sulking mood, while she plays a slow blues on her guitar, that seems to fit with her mood. There´s a small knock on the door and Joey comes in.

Joey:

Are you sure, you don´t want to come down and hang out with the rest of us?

Angie stops playing and looks up at Joey.

Angie:

Dad, how did you deal with it, the first time a girl broke your heart?

Joey sees that it´s time for a father/daughter talk and sits down next to her.

Joey:

Did something happen, that you want to tell me about?

Angie:

It´s more like what didn´t happen! Right now, Jordan is out on a date with Maya, this annoying "Little Miss Perfect", who never does anything wrong!

Joey:

And you´d much rather that he was on a date with you, is that it?

Angie:

It just feels so unfair!

Joey:

I know, it does, Sweetie. It´s still better than being told to your face, that he didn´t like you after all, like it happened to Manny, don´t you agree?

Angie:

Did some guy actually say those words to her? What a jerk!

Joey:

That jerk was your older brother and from what he told me, she had done her share to deserve it. If you want a hint on not to do, trying to tell him who he could and couldn´t hang out with after one date, probably was a slight tactitcal mistake on her part! She overplayed her hand just a little, you could say!

He gets a small smile out of Angie after all.

Joey:

As for my first real taste of heartbreak, it of course sucked, but I got over it. So, don´t go around thinking that you´re the only one, whose first attempt at love didn´t work out, like you wanted it to. Not that him going on one date with another girl has to mean, that your chance with him is gone.

Angie:

You don´t think, it is?

Joey:

If everyone I knew when I was your age had married their first date, then I would have married Liz which, with all due respect to her, would have been an extremely short marriage! Uncle Snake would have married Melanie and the two of them would no doubt have had some very funny looking kids by now, while the first girl to go out with his older brother Glenn would be married to a gay guy! Do you see what I´m saying?

Angie:

That I shouldn´t give up?

Joey:

You´re a special girl, Angie. I can´t see why any boy would choose another girl over you.

Angie:

You only think that, because you´re my dad!

Joey:

Perhaps, but it´s the truth. If you come downstairs, we can watch a movie of your choice.

Angie:

Actually, I think I might go over and pay Jenny a visit,

Joey:

That´s okay. I´m just glad, that I could help to put you in a better mood.

He gets up and leaves her. She grabs her phone and calls up Jenny.

Angie:

Hi, Jenny! What do you say, that we go out tonight? I have a plan so cunning, that all of the other cunning plans get jealous, just from hearing about it!

She smiles to herself.

4. Int. Mall. Evening.

Angie and Jenny are walking through the mall, that´s quite busy with people doing their shopping.

Jenny:

This was you cunning plan? To go to the mall and hope, that we see them?

Angie:

Okay, so maybe I overdid the brilliance of it!

Jenny:

Do we have any kind of indicatation, that this is where they are or are we just crossing our fingers and hoping for the best?

Angie:

Half of each. I asked Jordan what they were doing and he said that he didn´t know yet. Usually when he can´t come up with something to do, he comes down here.

Jenny:

Angie, do me and the entire population of Toronto a favor. Don´t ever become a cop!

Angie:

It´s not like I can text him and ask him where they are!

Jenny:

Why not?

Jenny gets out her phone and sends a text to Jordan.

Jenny:

"Me and Angie are at the mall. Are you guys down here too", question mark.

Angie:

Don´t send it.

Jenny does, which makes Angie a little miffed with her.

Angie:

Now they know that we´re stalking them!

Jenny:

I think that you have to have seen someone first, before the actual stalking can begin!

Angie:

What if he reads it and gets suspicious, that something is up?

Jenny:

Then maybe you´ll do the logical thing and tell him, that you want to be his girlfriend, before it´s too late!

Angie:

You don´t think, it already is?

Jenny:

How should I know? I´m just trying to get you to behave sensible and rational for once!

Angie:

Of course you have to mention the two things, I´m worst at!

Jenny gets a text back and looks at her phone.

Jenny:

They´re in "Funland" next to the arcade machines. He writes that we should stop by and say hi, if we have the time.

Angie:

Then it wouldn´t really be intruding on them, would it?

Jenny:

You´re hopeless! Let´s go to Funland and see, if we can find them.

The two girls head off to "Funland".

5. Int. Liberty´s Apartment. Evening.

Liberty is having fun with her old friends and they have Toby and Kendra joining them too on a Skype call, through Liberty´s laptop.

Emma:

It´s nice to see that you two are still going strong.

Toby (over Skype):

We make it work, don´t we, Honey?

Kendra (over Skype):

I´d say so.

The two of them kiss.

Toby (over Skype):

Anyway, we should get going. We´re meeting some friends of mine at a comedy club in half an hour.

JT:

I don´t know if I like this whole you making friends without me, Tobes! We don´t know what it could lead to!

The two old pals smile at one another and JT looks happy for him.

Toby (over Skype):

I still haven´t found anyone, that can replace you, JT.

Manny:

If I were you, then I wouldn´t even try!

Kendra (over Skype):

Have a great evening, you guys!

Liberty:

You too.

The Skype call ends and Liberty closes the laptop down.

Emma:

And that was the most I´ve talked to him, since we left high school.

Manny:

It´s the first time I´ve spoken to Kendra since graduation. Time has flown so incredibly fast, since we left school, hasn´t it?

Liberty:

Tell me about it!

JT:

I can hear that none of you have to work menial jobs, or you wouldn´t be saying that!

Manny:

Aww, poor baby!

Manny gives him a small kiss.

Manny:

It won´t be that way forever, I promise.

Liberty stands up and looks ready to get some work done.

Liberty:

Well, if we´re going to eat tonight, then I´ll need one of you, that isn´t named JT, to help me out in the kitchen.

JT:

Why not me?

Liberty:

Because I still remember the taste of your one and only cooking experiment, as far as I remember!

Emma:

I´ll help.

Liberty:

Great! It´ll give us a chance to catch up too.

Emma and Liberty head off to the kitchen, while JT tries to look amazed.

JT:

Should I feel insulted or glad, that I won´t have to do any work?

Manny:

That is a real head scratcher!

They kiss again.

6. Int. Liberty´s Kitchen. Evening.

Liberty and Emma are helping one another with making Fajita´s.

Liberty:

Someone´s gotten practice, since the last time we did this.

Emma:

You could call it a natural progression. If there´s one thing you learn very quickly in college, it´s how far your meager funds will take you.

Liberty giggles.

Liberty:

I learned that too, although my parents give me a healthy allowance.

Emma:

How healthy are we talking?

Liberty:

Enough, that I don´t have to worry about money. At least that was one thing, I didn´t have to concern myself with.

Emma:

Yeah, but you don´t want to live that way for the rest of your life, do you?

Liberty:

No, but what jobs right now, am I qualified for, that are even slightly interesting? I guess, that I could become a secretary at my dad´s law firm, but that´s basically just running errands most of the day and answering phones. It´s not exciting, is what I´m trying to say.

Emma:

Is there anything you could think of, that you would want to do?

Liberty:

I guess ... don´t say this to anyone, but I did some DJ´íng down in Boston.

Emma looks surprised.

Emma:

Like on the radio?

LIberty:

No, only at private parties. It was Jimmy who came up with the idea as something, we could do together. I wouldn´t mind doing that for a living, but where do you start?

Emma:

I´ve started volunteering down at our local college radio station. All of the DJ´s down there started out exactly like you did and just went for it.

Liberty:

Yeah, but that´s a college radio station. I´m not currently in college, in case you haven´t noticed!

Emma:

There´s lots of small local stations, that need hosts and dj´s aorund here too. It can´t hurt to try to get a job with one of them, can it?

Liberty doesn´t look dismissive of it.

7. Int. "Funland". Evening.

Montage - Song: "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne.

We get a fun little montage of Angie and a more and more reluctant Jenny, as the montage goes on and she ends up having to do more and more embarrassing things to hide, what her and Angie are actually doing. She sets the bar at kissing a boy, she doesn´t know though, when Jordan and Maya almost catch them in the act of spying on them.

8. Int. Women´s Room. Evening.

Angie and Jenny are washing their hands after a bathroom visit.

Jenny:

As very un-entertaining as this evening has been, I need to get home soon or I´ll miss my curfew.

Angie:

It´s just so unfair!

Jenny:

Can you change that CD, please?

Angie:

She´s like so, whatever! He could do so much better!

Jenny:

And you think, you should get together right now, is that it?

Angie:

That´s exactly what I´m talking about!

They grabs some towels and wipe their hands, before heading back out.

8. Int. "Funland". Evening.

Angie and Jenny come out from the women´s room to find Maya waiting for them with her arms crossed and looking as tough, as it´s possible for her to look. Which admittedly isn´t all that tough, even for a twelve-year-old girl, but still enough for Angie and Jenny to worry a little.

Maya:

Why have you been spying on us all evening?

Angie:

You must have imagined it!

Jenny:

She likes Jordan and made me do it with her!

Angie:

Thanks for throwing me under the bus, Jenny!

Jenny:

Okay, so maybe she didn´t actually make me do it with her, but I had no fun whatsoever tonight, I swear!

Angie shoots Jenny an annoyed look, while Maya stares her down. Jenny looks apologetic.

Jenny:

Sorry, you know that I´m no good, when I get put under pressure!

Maya:

Go somehwhere else, Jenny. Angie and I need to have a girl talk.

Jenny:

I´ll be right over there, when you need me.

She walks over to where she pointed to.

Angie:

Where´s Jordan?

Maya:

He´s outside waiting for his dad to pick him up. So, how are we gonna settle this?

Angie:

You mean like, a fight?

Maya has to smile a little.

Maya:

I think we can both agree, that a fight between the two of us would probably be more funny to look at than anything else!

Angie:

Good, because I´ve never actually been in a fight before and I don´t feel any need to try it for myself!

Maya:

Me neither. Do you have any suggestions?

Angie thinks about it for a second or two.

Angie:

You could just let me have him, of course?

Maya:

No!

Angie:

How about this then? One game of Air Hockey, you versus me, winner gets to date him.

Maya:

Done! But, you should know that I´ve never been beaten in a game of Air Hockey!

Angie:

Yeah? Well ... how many games have you played?

Maya:

Four! You?

Angie:

Three and although I lost one of those games, I´m still confident that I´ll win!

Maya:

We´re really bad at talking smack, aren´t we?

Angie:

More like awful at it!

Maya:

In that case, I say let the best girl win!

They shake on it and Jenny comes back to them.

Jenny:

Does that mean, you two have found an adult way to settle this?

Angie:

Yeah, we´re playing a game of Air Hockey, to see who gets to date him.

Maya:

It´s really the most fair way of settling it!

Jenny:

I guess, I was wrong!

Angie and Maya look pleased with their decision, though.

9. Int. "Funland". Evening.

Angie and Maya are playing their extremely important game of Air Hockey against one another and it´s a very close affair indeed! The score is tied at 8-8 and both of them are playing with everything they have in their tiny bodies, while Jenny is practically getting cross-eyed from trying to follow the "puck" with her eyes. After a lengthy duel, Angie manages to score on Maya, bringing the score to 9-8.

Angie:

Oh, look who´s winning for once and who´s trying what it´s like to lose, for the first time in her life!

Maya takes Angie´s words personally from the look of it and Jenny sees the need to intervene.

Jenny:

Excuse us for a sec, Maya. We need a second to talk tactics!

She pulls Angie away a little, to where Maya can´t hear them.

Angie:

The only tactic I need to know, is that I´m better at it, than she is!

Jenny:

This isn´t about that! Don´t you know about her mom?

Angie:

No, what about her?

Jenny:

She´s in a wheelchair thanks to some disease, she has. Their dad couldn´t handle it, so he split on them and her sister.

Angie´s pride suddenly starts to fade very quickly.

Angie:

For real?

Jenny:

It can´t be easy for her, so maybe you should cool it with the insults?

Angie nods and they go back to the Air Hockey table, where Maya is ready to play.

Maya:

Ready?

Angie:

Ready.

Maya gets the play started and although Angie defends her goal, she also doesn´t do anything to accidentally score again. Maya takes advantage of it and scores an easy goal on her.

Jenny:

9-9! I have to admit, that I am a very tiny bit excited, how this will turn out!

Angie puts the puck down on the table, but stops herself before hitting it with her paddle, when she considers what she´s actually doing right now. Maya looks at her with confusion on her face.

Maya:

What are you waiting for?

Angie:

This moment right now.

Angie, in stead of shooting the puck towards Maya´s goal, scores a deliberate own goal to both Jenny and Maya´s surprise.

Angie:

Maya, I´m really sorry that we ruined your date tonight. I hope, that we can still be friends.

Maya is so surprised, that she barely knows what to say.

Maya:

I guess so, but won´t it get in the way, that we like the same boy?

Angie:

Nah! I´m going to do the one sensible thing, I have done all night and let you have him.

Jenny looks a little proud of Angie, who looks glad with her decision too.

10. Int. Liberty´s Apartment. Evening.

Liberty is saying goodnight to her guests.

Liberty:

Thanks for coming over, guys.

JT:

Now that you´re back, we might as well make a habit of it.

Liberty:

I wouldn´t mind that!

Manny:

How about tomorrow?

JT:

We have a kid to think of too, you know? Sometimes, I think you forget that!

Liberty:

Bring her over. Nowhere in my lease does it say that a baby isn´t allowed in here.

Emma:

I wouldn´t be so sure, if I was you! They put some strange small print in those contracts.

Manny and JT leave, while Emma stays behind for a moment.

Emma:

It is possible to move forward with your life in other ways, you know. In case that you don´t decide to go back to school.

Liberty:

Not in the eyes of my parents!

Emma:

Just because they see it one way, doesn´t mean you have to see it that way. Everyone is different, including you and if there´s another way out there, that turns out to be better for you, I think that it would be a shame for you to automatically dismiss it because of them.

Emma leaves her to think about it and Liberty closes the door after she´s left. She smiles to herself afterwards at the thought of all of the new opportunities, that this has opened up for her.

11. Int. Joey and Caitlin´s Living Room. Evening.

Angie is talking about what happened with her parents.

Angie:

After Jenny said that, I started picturing what her life must be like with no dad around to talk to and give her fatherly advice, not to mention her mom being stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. I guess, I just always thought she had it so easy, that it made me look at her another way when I found out, that she doesn´t.

Caitlin:

It sounds like an evening, where you´ve done a lot of growing up!

Angie:

I guess, you can say that.

Joey:

Although it´s not fine with us that you went to the mall without telling us, so we have to ground you for a week.

Angie:

That´s okay. It´s not like I have a boyfriend, who can take me out on a date or anything like that!

They smile at her.

Caitlin:

Angie, you´ve only just started this great big journey towards womanhood. You know the expression "Rome wasn´t built in a day", don´t you?

Angie:

Yeah?

Caitlin:

That´s sort of what growing up is like too.

Angie:

Are you telling me, that I´m like a house?

Joey:

In some ways, you could put it like that. See, every little brick that´s laid helps to create the complete person, you´ll hopefully become as an adult.

Caitlin:

Getting a strong foundation under that house is extremely important too.

Angie:

Duh, because otherwise it would sink into the ground! That´s logic!

Caitlin:

That´s what you´re building in these, what they call your formative years. Boyfriends and all of that will come in time, I promise, but even when it does, it´s still important that you keep working on yourself, if you want to become the woman, you really want to be.

Angie:

I guess that makes sense.

Joey:

You could even grow up to be like Caitlin.

Angie:

Can I be like Manny instead? No offense, Caitlin, but I don´t want to wait until I´m in my 30´s, until I start having kids!

Angie smiles to herself.
