Chapter 3: After the Meteor

Jeanine's POV

I groaned as I began to wake up. My eyelids fluttered slowly. After a while, my eyelids opened fully. I found I was not outside the ice cream shop, but in a hospital bed. Just then, two doctors entered the room, followed by my parents, Granny June, and Ace's parents, Mrs. Evangeline and Mr. Jackie Bunny. I turned around to find Ace and Anya in separate beds. They were also awake. Ace's mother ran to him and embraced him very tightly.

"Oh, my wittle bunny baby, I was so worried about you!" Mrs. Bunny said. Ace's face turned red from embarrassment due to his mom's nickname and due to her tight hug. "Mom, I love ya too, but you're hurting me!" Mrs. Bunny then let go. "Sorry, sweet baby." My father then took out his wallet, and gave Granny June 50 dollars. "And the rest of the forfeit?" My father muttered, "Maybe betting that a meteor would hit today was a bad idea." Then, Dad, whose face red with embarrassment, literally took a bite out of his wallet. Mom asked, "Girls, you OK?" I said, "Yeah, Mom. You don't need to worry. My glasses, on the other hand, are not." Dad then asked my sister, "What about you, Anya?" Anya said, "Yeah, I feel great. It's like I'm a completely new person." I didn't know it at the time, but what Anya said was a clue for what life had in store for me.

The doctor said, "Thankfully, the children are all right. No concussions, no broken bones, nothing too serious. But, I did notice something weird." He took out some x-ray photos, and showed them to us. "Ace and Jeanine didn't suffer fatal injuries, but Melanya suffered many fractures in her shoulders, left upper arm, and her hip. But, when we double-checked the x-ray, it seemed as if all of Anya's fractures had healed themselves." Naturally, my family was shocked at the doctor's findings. But, we all shrugged it off despite the absurdity of what he said. But, Anya did look perfectly fine, except for the fact that someone had called her Melanya, which bothered her. So, the doctor did have a point.

The doctor then began to speak again. "We noticed something else strange. One of the specialists here was checking everyone who was hit by the shockwaves. We noticed something while looking at their genes. Most of the patients' genetic codes were normal, like Melanya. But for other patients, like Ace and Jeanine, their genetic codes seem to have changed. We don't know what the new genetic code represents, but we do know that it is related to the meteor." We were also confused about this, but we shrugged it off.

We were released from the hospital later that day. I was about to go to bed, when I realized that I had forgotten my phone in the kitchen. I was planning to look at EBuzz, the greatest social media platform of the decade. I would always check my follower account at the end of the day. I was too exhausted to get my phone. I stretched my arm out to the door, and then something odd happened. My arm started to stretch beyond it's normal length. I looked at it in shock. Then the door opened. It stretched out for a while, and then came back with phone in hand. I shot out of my bed, and then very lightly sighed, before letting out a loud and long scream. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" My mom, dad, and grandma then ran out in a panic. "Jeanine, what's wrong? I hope it's not your injuries." Mom asked. "It's not that, Mom." Granny then said, "Okay, we just wanted to make sure. Whenever your father would scream like that, it would likely mean he wet the bed." "Mom..." Dad said, clearly embarrassed. Then, they walked back to their room.

Instead of looking at EBuzz, I went to my group chat with Ace, which we called "Besties". I texted, "Dude, I need to tell you something. Right now!" Ace texted back two minutes later saying, "Jeanine, what is it? I'm so tired." I then texted, "Meet me at Old Sulky tomorrow at 9 a.m. It's important." Old Sulky was what we named the tree where we met. Then, Ace texted me back saying, "Why?" I said, "Well... I think I'm now human rubber My arm just stretched out longer than it ever could." Ace then texted, "Well, something's been goin' on with me ever since we got home. My eyes keep flashin' red, and some strange beams shot out of dem." "Oh, okay. Well, see you at the tree. Goodnight." I then sent my text, and turned off my phone. Tomorrow, my life would change again.
