Wolf Princess chapter 27
At first we just kept bursting through a maze of twisting passages. I tried to keep track of them all with the twisting and turning, but it was impossible to do so. The rattling cart seems to know its own way around because Taloncrick wasn't steering. I figured it to be more magic.
My eyes stung hard as the cold air rushes past me. I struggle to keep them open. I don't want to miss a thing. At one point I think I spot a large burst of flame at the end of a passage and twisted around to see what it was, but soon missed my chance to. Our group plunged even deeper into the ground. We passed an underground lake where huge stalactites and stalagmites grew from the ceiling and the floor.
"How massive is this place," I asked, calling to Remus over the noise of the cart.
"Oh, it goes for miles," shouted Remus, over the noise. "Gringotts is hundreds of miles under London. It's quite deep under the Underground. Without a goblin for a guide you'd probably get lost trying to get out."
Another few minutes pass and we still kept on continuing deeper. Eventually the cart stops a few yards away from a large opening in the passage wall.
"this way," said Taloncrick, getting out of the cart and moving away. The rest of us exit, following him.
I'm trying to listen since I thought I could hear something nearby. As we move around the corner and saw what had been making the noise and halted in my tracks.
A gigantic dragon is tethered down to the ground in front of us, barring access to a number of vaults behind it. The dragon's scales once beautiful have turned very pale and flaky during its long incarceration under the earth. Its eyes were milky pink. Both of its rear legs bore heavy cuffs from which chains led to enormous pegs driven deep into the rocky floor. It's great spiked and majestic wings were folded close to its body. If it was able to spread them, they would have been able to fill the entire chamber. The dragon turned its head toward us and roars with a force that made the surrounding rock and stone tremble. Opening its mouth, it spat a jet of fire toward us that would've severely burned us if we had not retreated back up the passageway.
As soon as we are out of range, I spin angrily to confront Taloncrick.
"What the hell is a dragon doing down here," I demanded, teeth gritted in fury.
"We have it contained here to guard the high security vaults for our clients at Gringotts," answers Taloncrick, indifferent. "Having one down here is actually one of the many beneficial reasons why no one has ever dared to try and break into any of the vaults. They're too scared they've be killed by one."
"This is absolutely no place for a dragon, especially one in such a horrendous condition such as this," I snarled. "A dragon should be flying freely through the skies, soaring in the air with its scales shining from the sun and flame shooting from its mouth. Instead it's imprisoned here with no view of the sky, hardly any room to stretch and move, and looks so emaciated that it appears not to have had a decent meal in many months."
"We feed it enough," disputes Taloncrick, eyes narrowed. "And it doesn't need any more from than it already has at present."
Eyes blazing in fury, baring my teeth. I felt so mad that the urge to reach for my knife is nearly overpowering. As carefully as I could I shift my hand toward the concealed blade.
Out of all the others Remus was the single one who saw what I was doing. Just as my hand grazes my knife Remus brought his hand up to my own. At this I avert my gaze away from the goblin and over to him.
Shaking his head, Remus warned "Leave it. Even if you continue to argue there's nothing you can do for it."
Remus says this soothingly probably trying to both offer reassurance and keep me calm.
Somehow, by some miracle, I managed to quell my boiling rage just fit to burst forth. I had to remind myself that I'm no longer in the Forbidden Forest. This was still a brand new world for me and I had to follow its rules whether I want to or not. So far now I restrain myself from cutting the goblin.
The goblin then retrieves a bag from inside the cart. He extracts a number of small metal instruments that when shaken create a loud, ringing noise resembling small pebbles clinking together.
"You need to shake them together," instructs Taloncrick. "It will expect pain when it hears the sound. It will retreat and I will place my palm upon the door of the vault."
Our group advance around the corner again while shaking the clankers. The noise echoes off the rocky walls, grossly magnified, so that inside my head seems to vibrate with the cling. The dragon unleashes a hoarse roar and then retreats, showing submission. I can clearly see it trembling in fear as we draw nearer. The scars made by the vicious slashes across its face become more obvious. I guess it had been taught with shark and scorching hot objects to fear pain when it heard the sound resonating from the clankers. The dragon whimpers in horror of our group.
Living in the Forbidden forest does have its advantages and taught me many things. One of them was learning the languages for nearly all the creatures on this earth.
As the dragon is crying, I can understand it plain as day. It keeps repeating over and over again the same thing.
"Please don't hurt me! Please don't hurt me! Please don't hurt me! Please don't hurt me! I'll be good!"
Its pleas and calls go completely unnoticed by the others as they focus on the vault, but not to me.

By the way whose been watching House of the Dragon? I am so in love with Prince Daemon. He is a dream. Matt Smith was the perfect person to play that character. Similar to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool no one could've done it better.
