Two lights crash into the water; up from those two spots, Sora and Riku appear, and both are greeted by their friends, welcoming them back home.

Sora is overjoyed to finally be home and together with his friends again. They have been separated for such a long time, and Sora wants to know everything about what happened to them.
During their separation, Kairi spent most of her time tending school and worrying about them. Sora feels terrible to have put Kairi through that, but she eases his feelings. "I'm glad you're both back, and I could help you both out if just a little in the end." After having seen her bit in action, Sora is glad to hear that and suggests that if she would like to join him and Riku's sparring matches. Kairi is a little hesitant but agrees to train with them once in a while.

Opposite Kairi, Riku had been incredibly busy during their time of separation. He spent most of the time being a nuisance for the back then too strong Organization, aiding Naminé and ending up befriending Ienzo, which in his words; "It was rocky in the start, but we soon made it work." Riku said and eyed Ienzo, who returned the look with a knowing smirk. Sora is glad to see that Riku got himself a new friend and gets the sense that Riku is mainly happy to be home so he can relax for a bit. Sora does not blame him one bit for that. He wants a nap just after an hour of work on a raft.

It's nice to be home, but it's also sort of bittersweet. Sora knows that his two traveling companions— his friends- have to return to their home world. It will be strange not to have Donald and Goofy around, and Sora sorta hopes that this isn't their last adventure as he still has to keep his promise to Shion. But first, they all need a breather from their latest tribulations. Does leave an excellent question; "Any idea how you will get back to your own worlds?" he asks the former Nobodies of the renamed world, Radiant Garden.

"I am not sure if my Keeper has survived the destruction of The World That Never Was, but if it has, I should be able to summon it in a few days," Shion replies and explains why she can't call that flaming eagle now. "It needs to recover from the strike it took from Saix."

"I know a keyblade trick to open portals." Mickey speaks up but hesitates to do it as there are strings attached. "but depending on the distance between our worlds, it can be very dangerous." And Mickey honestly does not want to test his luck.

This is certainly annoying but not unexpected. "It seems we will stay here for a while." Even voices to no one in particular, Aeleus frowns, also quite annoyed, while Ienzo… has already left to investigate the world of the keyblade wielders. Even resists the urge to snort in annoyance at this and instead decides to go over and speak with the small king about their plans on how to get home if Shion's Keeper won't be able to come.

Leaving the crowd for a while, Riku walks over to the smaller island and finds a certain irony now that he's back. For so long, he was so sure that he could never return home, forced to stay in the shadows and live in this self-banishment made from not only his shame but the fate he had willingly thrown at himself. Riku is relieved that he's free from Xehanort's Heartless form, yet he can still feel the darkness he was given, and Riku does not think he ever will be rid of it. It is okay, he has learned to handle it, all thanks to the friends he got on his personal journey. But like Sora, Riku had promised someone; to return for him and Riku has every intention of retrieving the remnants of Vanitas's heart inside Castle Oblivion. He has to figure out how to get there...

"Quite unusual how one can miss home when been unable go back for a time."

Riku chuckles a small laugh, "Yeah," he bobs his head back to Ienzo, walking over to him. "it's quite funny to think about." Another thing he also finds quite funny and that is this scene he has with Ienzo. "You're not going to lecture me like last time?"

Ienzo laughs and asks, still smiling, "Do you want another lecture?" adding mainly as a joke. "I do have a few more illusion tricks I could use." After a moment of silence, they both laugh, "It's a pity this world order won't allow people to stay in contact with one another." Ienzo muses, watching this simple world of islands; it seems disconnected from everything compared to Radiant Garden. "I wonder how it would've been if each world wasn't disconnected but open for everyone, even if it's just in a small manner."

Eyeing the slightly older male, Riku knows that obstacle wouldn't be a problem for his friend. "You're smart, Ienzo. I'm sure you will figure something out." Ienzo chuckles, and after another moment of silence, Riku does admit it. "It would be nice, though, knowing you can either leave or be in contact with friends one made from another world. Not trapped in your own world when knowing so much is out there."

"My thoughts exactly." Ienzo smiles before turning his gaze to where Shion is sitting; it's clear as day that she is broken up about what happened in The World That Never Was. His smile fades at how all her friends are either gone or trapped. But at least he knows where one of her friends will appear. "We're bringing Shion with us. It's only a matter of time before Axel's human will return." And he better feel mighty sorry about what happened in Castle Oblivion. Otherwise, that man might not survive long enough to help his friends.

Riku slowly nods, but they still have the issue of how their friends will leave this world. "Figured out a way back?" Riku asks, blinking at the chuckle coming from his slightly older friend.

"It looks like your world is like Twilight Town and Radiant Garden." Looking down at Even still discusses with King Mickey how to go back and figures he has to tell them after this conversation. "We simply have to find the gateway."

This means they are connected unlike most other worlds, so leaving won't be a problem— if you know the trick, of course. "You gotta teach me how to do that." Riku says, causing Ienzo to chuckle in amusement. He shakes hands with his new friend. "See you soon."

"Likewise, I'll try and keep you updated on my project." Ienzo replies, and with that, he leaves this small patch of the island, going over to join the other apprentices. Riku watches them talk with Sora for a while, then waves after them as they head out. When they are gone, Riku decides to join his friends. They have a lot of catching up to do.

Another side, another promise

"Hey, can you hear me?"

Roxas slowly opens his eyes to a familiar voice.

"Are you awake yet?" He can see a shape slowly getting into focus. "Or… maybe you're falling back to sleep." Roxas blinks, unsure if he is awake or not, not that it matters, he's happy to see his friend. "Axel."

Axel smiles weakly; he takes a seat at the clock tower, watching the scenery for a moment. "Something tells me we won't be able to talk like this with our conscious for much longer."

Roxas can only nod in agreement. He knows that soon Sora's heart will drag him back. But until then, will enjoy this moment, no matter how brief it may be. It reminds Roxas of a question he has wanted to ask ever since he learned about Axel's demise. "Why did you go away?"

"I guess… it was a leap of fate." Axel replies and hands Roxas an ice cream. To be honest, "I saw a truth of what lies after this dull existence. If it happens to me… well, I don't know." All he knows is that he had to try. Besides, Roxas's not the only one wondering about something. "Roxas, are you sure you don't have a heart?"

Roxas takes a bite of his ice cream, thinking back to some of the conversations he had with Axel back when they were on the run. "You said Nobodies 'feel' emotions through their memories."

"Yup, but you clearly never needed his."

Roxas smiles weakly at Axel's remark. "No, but I did use my own memories." He remembers all the good and bad times he had with his friends, how each brought out an emotion. "I remember getting excited when being teamed up with some of you. Nervous when Xion got hurt, feeling pain in the chest and unable to stop crying…." Roxas drops his head. Yeah, that last thing is powerful in him, and he does not think it ever will go away. "The 'heart' is the reason, right?"

Axel simply nods, and they sit in silence for a while, broken by Axel's question, "…Hey, do you remember?" his green eyes aimed at the ever-setting sun. "All the days we spent like this, eating ice cream and watching the sunset?"

"Yeah…" Roxas smiles, "all those times are the most precious memories I have. We had a lot of silly talks."

"Sure did."

Dropping his head but still having s faint smile. "I wonder if we can ever go back to those days…" Roxas muses; he blinks when droplets are falling on Axel's lap, at first he mistakes it for the ice cream melting, then realizes it's coming from Axel… he's crying. "Axel…"

… It hurts… so much… why does it suddenly hurt? Right this moment, Axel thinks he prefers the emptiness over this. "Man… this ice cream is the saltiest I have tasted for a long time…." He whispers, not realizing he has dropped the ice cream, and the trembling hand is on his chest as the pain increases; it is pulling his soul back to where it belongs. He does not notice the tears washing away the marks under his eyes.

Roxas watches his friend experience genuine emotions; although it's sad, he is glad that Axel got what he wanted. He takes a bite of his ice cream and looks up at the sky. It's soon time to go back, but before he does. "Are you still planning on keeping the promise? Us going to the beach?"

"O-Of course." Axel wipes away his tears, it's hard, but they are slowly easing up.

Roxas smiles, glad that's the case, and gives Axel something to hold onto, "Got it memorized?" he playfully teases his friend before he fades back to Sora.

Axel chuckles, though it's a sad one, for he can only watch his friend return to where he belongs, and well, he thinks he's going back too. The same light surrounds his body, taking it apart, but this sense is warm and comforting, unlike when he had faded into the darkness. "…See you…pal." He closes his eyes, allowing the light to take him away.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"Quite the trip you took there."

That voice… it's… Luxord. Wha.. what is he…

A hand opens his, and something is placed before— he presumes Luxord makes his hand close around the object. He slowly opens his eyes, at first just a humanoid figure, then he sees it is indeed the Gambler of Fate… wait, why is he not in the Organization coat anymore? It is so weird seeing the man in regular clothing.

"Saix has put down everything on you; let's see if this gamble is going to pay off." Luxord smiles down at him, then the man straightens up and walks away.

He tries to get up and call for the man, but his body just won't obey him. It's too heavy. "Wait…" He calls, but this heaviness gets too much, and the darkness takes him once again.

When he wakes again, he's in a bed, out of the Organization coat, instead in a white shirt; he's still in the black pants though. "Wha…?" He sits up, "What am I—" and gets tackled by someone shrilling: "Axel!" It takes him a moment to comprehend what just the heck happened. His mind is a bit of a mess. Looking down, he sees a very familiar face. His eyes wide in shock, "Xion?" then a bigger surprise hits him when he realizes that he didn't need to think about how to feel happy; the emotions are coming all of their own. He jerks up, making Xion slide off him, and he puts a hand on his chest. Confusion, shock, then relief, and soon sheer joy. Lea gasps but is utterly unable to stop that smile from crawling up his face.
He begins to laugh.
After so long, he is finally feeling genuine emotions. "Have I been longing for this!" He beams as his female friend once again glomps him. This time, Lea reacts to his heart's command, "Come here, you!" and pulls Xion into a hug.
She laughs and, like him, is unable to stop the tears. Lea tightens his hold around his friend, feeling like his heart is about to burst from how happy he feels at this very moment.

"I've missed you…." Shion sobs into Axel's shirt, and she realizes a change after a moment. "You're warm." She's so used to him being cold.

Lea chuckles and just to mess a bit with her. "Must've forgotten to turn off my firepower." Xion giggles, still with tears running down her eyes. Lea tries to stop his own tears, but well, he can't.

She makes another observation; so many emotions are brimming out from his eyes, making them shine in a way she has never seen before. "It's like the sun is shining into your eyes— hey, the markings under your eyes, they're gone." She realizes, taken by surprise by this subtle change.

"Explains why I can't stop the waterwork." Lea muses, touching the spot the markings should've been. Those markings were to stop him from crying, and right about now, he does wish he still got them. This is getting a bit embarrassing. Hoping this will stop his emotions from rolling over him like a rockfall. "So, how have things been in my absence?"

Xion's smile fades, and instantly he regrets the question, for its clear things have been hard for her. "Something in the darkness has taken Isa." Hold up, did he tell Xion his real name? Talk about Isa finally trusting someone other than him. That's good to hear.

But what Shion said... it seems this... thing inside of Isa finally got complete control. "I am so sorry..." if he had known this would happen... he may never have done this.

"He knew it would happen," Xion explains as if trying to assure him it's not his fault. "and I think... he tried to prepare me for it too." by the look of it, that attempt on Saix's side did not work, but who can indeed be ready for such a hard punch to the gut.

Lea opens his hand and sees a moon-shaped badge. It wasn't a dream. Luxord did indeed visit him right after his recompletion and apparently has been working with Saix, for why else would he leave this behind? Something that seems to be important to his friend. What is so important about this moon-engraved badge? Guess time will tell. "Let's go outside." He says and gets up from bed. Lea feels like he needs fresh air, but also... he needs to face the reality of what happened all those years ago.
Xion follows him till, at one point, she takes the lead as Lea got little to no clue where he's going. He gets the sense that she's been inside the castle for a while to know where all of these hallways lead. On the way, Lea spots Lexaeus— or whatever his true name is. The big man isn't interested in stopping him or Xion; in fact, he is way more at ease than the last time he saw the man. Lea guesses that now that he realizes how screwed up what he did in Castle Oblivion was, Lexaeus seems readier to give him a second chance.
The big man simply gives him a nod; Lea isn't sure how to respond, so he decides to quickly follow Xion, who hasn't noticed the brief tension between the two former Organization members.

Past a large double door, after so many years of avoiding this place, Lea sees what has become of his homeworld. He remembers the signs of destruction from when he showed Roxas his former home, but only from this high up Lea gets a proper idea of the havoc the Heartless did. The city is like a ruin, with so many scars, and barely anything from the beautiful gardens has survived. The sighs create a lump in his throat, and it takes a lot from him not to start crying again.
Yet as his eyes scan the city that was his childhood playground, Lea notices signs of healing. Buildings with patchwork and other much-needed makeovers. Glittering water from fountains and taking a better look, there is green among this patchwork of buildings. "They are rebuilding." He finally observes. The city took a beating, but it and the survivors are slowly getting back up.

"I was told this place used to be beautiful." Shion muses softly, her sky-blue eyes scanning the city below as well. "I hope I one day will see it."

"Me too." Lea agrees, not entirely sure how he feels about all of this. He thinks this pain is sadness at how he lost practically everything that day. Maybe anger at what happened and how there was nothing he could do.
Another emotion is among this pain, though, one he didn't recognize as a Nobody but one he embraces fully as human. Lea puts a hand on Xion's shoulder, causing her to look at him instead of the city. He smiles at her, "Let's help each other and fix things, right?" she nods, smiling too.
It's going to be hard, not only restoring the home but so is getting their two lost friends back, but for the first time in years: Lea feels hope, which renewals his spark of determination. "No matter how long, we will set things right."

"Right." Shion nods in agreement, already feeling much better now she got one of her friends by her side again.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"Now then, Xemnas, what is this "purpose"?" He summoned a few cards, mainly so he could focus on something other than the nagging filth currently tainting his soul. Would've preferred to have avoided it, but alas, the Boss still needed an inside man to this grand game of his. "You didn't invite us back for old times' sake." This megalomania of a man does not do 'old time's sake.'
People are pawns, nothing else, and Xemnas got that in common with the Boss, though that keyblade wielder at least has a heart.

"You four are going to reveal your greatest secret: the ancient Keyblade legacy that slumbers within you."

Two of them were dumbfounded, one suspicious yet having a strange feeling that this man: Xemnas, spoke the truth.

And the one holding the cards, he almost dropped them but kept his hand steady. Maintaining a perfect poker face that hid the surprise of how in the world Xemnas knew about this. Now he knows why he must play as one of the thirteen vessels. Though, Xemnas being aware of that part of their past, it is pretty bad. The taint revealed that Xemnas and his other versions wanted to make another Keyblade War, all so to open Kingdom Hearts. But if he does that… not only would darkness claim the worlds once again, but the tainted light would overrun what was left of the survivors.

After the 'meeting,' he kept a distance, but when the moment arrived, he walked over to his long companion and spoke only for the other's ears. "You and I need to have a little chat."
And it seems the past destruction of his partner's Keeper allowed the memories to return.

Understatement of the year. "Yeah, no kidding… How the heck did Xemnas know about that? I mean," He walked past his partner, that watched him in his usual composed manner. "They are going to repeat history!" Arms out to put extra umpff on his words. "And who knows what the Boss will do if he—"

He puts a hand on his partner's mouth, "Hush, do not speak when this graveyard still has ears from the fallen." His companion removes the hand, glancing at the many keyblades lying around. Every single one has lost their might after having been without a master for so long, but it does not mean this place of the fallen cannot pick up on their conversation.

"Sheesh… did you really have to go there…" He mused, not at all happy about the reminder they were standing inside a worldwide graveyard. "This place freaks me out."

Ah, he forgot his partner had been part of the great bloodshed— not that he remembers, but this might be the reason for his fear of taking up the sword. "See it on the bright side," A pair of dice and he threw them into the air, catching them as he spoke to his companion. "The bench warming they put you on will free you from future combats."

True, and although it sucks, he really does not want to get into some grand battle with the keyblade wielders. Getting defeated by Rox— uh, Sora was bad enough... But that begs the question, "So you're okay being a pawn in their game?" He asked his partner, one who only engages in fights if it granted him some amusement through a game of his choice.

"I do not think I have any choice in this matter. Not only have our chief given me a clear command, but," He replied, tapping lightly on his chest. "you feel the taint, do you not?" His partner nodded slowly. "When the day arrives, its spore will spread, force any "chosen" to fight as a Seeker of Darkness." He opened his hand, revealing the dice inside. "We cannot change the rules of this great game among the mighty."

… Yes, they can. It's risky and so against the contract, but their Boss told them to always seek the path for a better future. And from where things are going, it won't make any happy ending other than this Xehanort fella. "Um, hello, you're the wielder of time, remember?" He reminded his partner, sure that power came from his Keeper, but his companion is literarily linked with his overgrown pet; their magic had become stupidly intervened. "You can go back and change stuff!"

Maybe so, and it would make for an exciting game, however; "Ah, but there are rules to this power. One can only walk the sand of time on the path one already has walked."

"Which is everywhere when it comes to you."

"Exactly," He bowed down and took some of the sandy dirt this once beautiful land got turned into after that terrible war. "If I step into the winds, there's no way of knowing where I'll end." He released the sand, sending each speck flying, some fell right away, while others stayed in the air for very long, and then there were a few that would keep flying around for the following days. "Without my Keeper, I cannot decide where my speck of sand will land, or if I will be forever lost to the winds."

"Yeah, not much of what you said made much sense to me." He admitted to his partner, who merely glanced at him in his calm manner. "But from what I understood, your "I'm anywhere and yet not" speech; it's impossible for you to time travel without your Keeper, right?" His partner nodded that he got that right. So far, so good; now, next question. "Then what about me?"

This came as quite the surprise, "You?" and rather amusing that his partner even suggested such a thing. He is well aware of how his partner's attitude is toward most things that require hard work.

"Crazy, I know. But I would rather get my hands dirty that deal with a world-ending cataclysm Xemnas has going." It can't bode well for someone wanting to make another keyblade war. Sure he wasn't here when it happened, but even he could see how many died from how many keyblades were lying around.

Hmm, his companion made a good point. If the Seeker of Darkness does indeed reach the remnants of how the World was supposed to be. Getting a hold of the enormous power residing inside that realm. It could put the fragments back together, but that would destroy the world that surrounded the fragments. Countless lives would be lost. "If you're certain, the path through time is not as simple as others led to believe." He warned his partner. Most would think it's a straight line, but in reality: "Time is like a desert. Always changing, a single stroke to a hill can make it topple over or do nothing at all, and you will…." Noticing he lost his partner on that metaphor, he instead decided to warm him more straightforwardly. "I cannot say when you will end up. Only you will be forced to walk that route until the link is broken." His partner tilted his head, and he tried again to explain the whole premise of time. Something he came to understand throughout his long walk through time. "There are only two ways staying 'alive' when time traveling: going back to your original time or reuniting with a future or past vision of yourself." There was also the fact that his partner would most likely create a new timeline, but he kept that for himself. His partner was already confused about this entire subject.

Hold up, so traveling through time is not as simple as he thought? It always looked simple when his partner did it. "Wait? So you mean that I'm stuck there? Even if I find your Keeper?" He asked, unsure how to feel that he won't be able to return and see the changes he would make.

First, his partner would never be able to get hold of his currently wandering Keeper. "He will not heed your call. Only my voice will be heard in the bellow of his steps." And second, "And that's one of the rules of time travel. You will be there until someone either destroys you, casting this 'you' into oblivion, or if the anchor is broken. In your case, it will be your past self's destruction. You can return to this time, but doing so will only solidify this timeline, making it harder to change. Do you follow me so far?"

He scratched his neck; it was very confusing. "Yeah, I think so…" but just to be sure. "So, I will be 'there' as long as the other me is around, and whatever I do will change this" He pointed at the ground. "future?"

"Most likely, but none can ever say for sure. Time is unpredictable; it flows and bends like water." He fully admitted to his partner and, again, won't bother getting into details about changing the timeline. His comrade looked confused enough as it was.

"So there will be two of me?"

Here it became quite funny, at least, he thought so. "Oh, for a time, there will be. You can go back to this time, but as I stated before; it will only cement this future."

"Right… so, I guess I'm not coming back." His partner muses, sounding quite discouraged by this fact.

Then at least there are other ways to finish the time traveling. "You can decide to fade away; cast this you into oblivion. Heed though that if this you do so; all of your memories of the adventure will be lost." He starts folding his cards, "Unless you decide to join your past self, but I suppose you prefer not to let him know what you have learned so far." His partner does have a tendency to run away from his problems. Not a valid tactic, but he's not the type to judge others' way of playing the great game that is life.

"I rather not, so… I have to fade away?" He asked, figuring he needed time to accept his doom. It would be best if he disappeared for good.

"Correct, but oblivion is a prize worth for the future you seek, is it not?" He asked his companion with that curious smile of his, waiting for the choice from the one before him.

Well, this is going to be a bigger pain than expected, but hopefully, things should get better in whatever timeline he makes by doing this. Maybe he can change the fact that he won't be part of the Organization; it sure would spare him years of boredom and bullying. Oh, he should perhaps find his Keeper. It would be useful having that kangaroo around. Taking a deep breath, preparing his mind for the most significant case of work he has ever been on. "Okay," He breathed out. "I'm ready." His partner pulls out his cards, throws them, and they spin around him. Between the whirl of cards, he saw the smiling face of his companion.

"Best of luck changing fate's hands."

He blacked out for a time, and when he woke, he found himself being carried by a very familiar Keeper; in the form of a leopard. 'Oh… shit…' He cursed to himself.
The Keeper dropped him onto the ground, and his Boss appeared in a swirl of magic.

The guy did not look happy. "What is the meaning of this?" His Boss demanded, very annoyed by this, "Didn't I specifically tell you that only your partner is allowed to jump into the time stream?"

He winched, really hoping that the Boss wouldn't have found out this soon. "How did you…?"

"I found your sorry butt trapped in time. Be glad I consider saving you was worth my time." The Boss pointed out harshly.

Uff, that one stung…

"Now, care to explain yourself."

He got on his feet, and even if he was taller than the Boss, he wouldn't dare to be rude towards the very person who gave him his Keeper and gave him the role of teaching others how to summon one. Not to mention the Boss was also the one who bound his partner's very heart to the Apatosaurus Keeper, making his life depend on it. "The future does not look good." He reported to the Boss, for once being utterly respectful towards a higher authority. "A man named Xehanort is trying to recreate the Keyblade war and… well, from what I understood, open Kingdom Hearts."

His Boss's only reaction was a slight head jerk, then he went into the almost same thinking position Zexion would've done. "I see… hm, that explains that sight." Not sure what he meant by that, and there's no way he's going to ask; he was in enough trouble as it is.
His Boss returned his attention back to him. "Alright, I will look past this contract breach and supervise you when you are here."

Phew got away from this stunt with only a slap on the wrist. "Thank you," He bowed to the Boss, does look up in confusion when the Boss spoke: "From now on, you will be known as Michi, and to be sure you don't perish before time." and right there, he got tackled down by a leopard, tearing up his left arm as that's the one he's using to keep this beast away from his throat.
Right before it tore him to shreds, someone got it away from him. Although the kid is younger, he instantly knew who it was and found himself unsure of what to do when Ro-uh, Sora treated him neutrally. Not wanting to cause confusion in the future when Sora would destroy his… what was it, past or present self? The one in this timeline. Sora was the one who destroyed him, and he needed to separate himself from that other him. Might not be much of a fighter, but he does know how to do magic and could easily change the pitch of his voice. "Thanks, you guys really saved my skin." He told the seemly three years younger boy. It's not as far back as he wanted, but it's better than nothing. About there, he noticed that the leopard the Boss sicked at him had torn the sleeve of the black coat, keeping him from using portals safely. "Oh, you gotta be kidding me…."Hopefully, he can get a lift from Roxas's Somebody.

Man, this is going to be so weird… sure hope he can get away from his killer, as he rather not be around him more than needed.

Finally, the last chapter of this book. Sorry for the long wait; my life has been a rollercoaster with stressful and, at times, straight-up horrible events.
I hope you've enjoyed this book and will continue to follow this story to the next: Birth By Sleep.

It will be a little different from the others. I will mainly follow Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, but I quickly realized I had to shift to others' views to make a coherent timeline.
