Chapter 85

Her bags were packed and there was nothing left to do than go downstairs and say goodbye to Charlie.

He thought it was temporary, even after the weekend she'd spent with him and he'd chosen to not question her odd behavior, he was still convinced she'd be back in three days once she and Edward had "scoped out" the campus of Dartmouth. What he didn't know was that they had arranged what would appear to be a car accident in New Hampshire, one which would take both of their lives.

Carlisle had somehow procured two bodies—a Jane and John Doe—that shared similarities with them. They would be dressed in their clothes and carry items that would identify them as Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan, and their injuries would be too great for anyone to dispute the claim.

The funeral arrangements would give Edward and Bella the opportunity to separate themselves from the family while she changed. Victoria would be told by Laurent—recruited as he'd been through the Denali family—that Edward had exiled himself to the wilderness of Alaska to grieve his lost mate. If everything went according to plan, Victoria wouldn't be able to resist searching him out and revel in his loss.

While the family took care of Victoria, Bella would be with the Denalis and stay out of trouble. As a newborn, she wouldn't do any good in a fight and only cause an unnecessary distraction, so it was better that she remained on the sideline even if she hated it.

Bella let out a sigh and looked at her room for the last time. It was still filled with her possessions and things that had sentimental value, but she hoped it would provide Charlie some comfort to have it all there until he decided to put it into storage.

She forced herself to keep her tears at bay when Charlie hugged her by the door.

"Have fun, Bells. And don't let those Ivy League college kids intimidate you. If you apply and get in, you have as much right to be there as they do."

"Thank you, Dad. Be safe while I'm away, okay?" she said and swallowed to hide the tremor in her voice.

"You know I always am, honey." He smiled, and she did her best to reciprocate.

"Good. I love you! See you in a few days." The lie burned her throat and she quickly ducked inside Edward's car where he was already waiting. He grabbed her hand and kissed the back of it.

"You've done everything you can to help him through this," he said and pulled out of the driveway.

"I know," Bella said and watched Charlie go back inside the house in the rear-view mirror. "Doesn't make it any easier, though."

A/N:

Yes, this is the direction I chose to take, and it's fine if you don't like it.

As you may have also noticed, I haven't even mentioned how Renée will take Bella's "death" or Bella wanting to spend time with her before this point. This relieves Charlie of the guilt of lying to Renée about Bella's whereabouts. They'll both believe her to be gone, and hearts will bleed and I know you never stop mourning a child, but eventually, they will learn to live with it and continue with their lives.

You can hate me if you want or if you need to for this chapter alone.
