Chapter 86

"Which one?" Bella asked, feeling slightly amused by Edward's obvious discomfort over the subject.

He refused to look at her even though he didn't have to focus as hardly on the road as he was. "Tanya expressed some interest. I let her know early on, and as politely as I could, that I didn't return that interest."

Bella waited for him to continue because she could sense that wasn't the end of the story. "But?" she asked when the silence stretched.

Edward released the wheel with one hand and ran it through his hair, something he often did when he felt agitated. "But Tanya was persistent. She was convinced she could awaken some kind of interest eventually if she simply continued to make her own infatuation known. It's one of the main reasons our family didn't consider settling down with Tanya's family on a permanent basis."

"Aww, you poor thing," Bella said teasingly and leaned over the center hold onto his free arm. "I only got to experience a fraction of it from our classmates. Couldn't have been easy to have a drop-dead gorgeous woman wanting you."

He took her teasing in stride and chuckled, happy she didn't display any insecurities about being in the same house as Tanya. "You're laughing now, but we'll have this conversation again in fifty or sixty years and you can tell me how you really feel then." He removed his arm from her hold and grabbed her hand instead. "I'm glad you're taking this all so well."

Bella shrugged. "Well, she won't be all over you now, will she? She knows we're coming so you can change me. It would be very bold of her to shoot another shot when you're hours from committing to forever." She absentmindedly touched his ring hanging around her neck, which Edward noticed.

"As far as I'm concerned, I committed to you a long time ago," he said, and she smiled.

"Exactly," she said and looked at him, the love she felt for him growing with the knowledge of his absolute loyalty. "So I have no reason to feel at all worried. Right?"

Edward nodded. "You're the only one for me, Bella. Always has been and always will be. I love you more than life itself, so yes, there's absolutely nothing for you to be worried about."

A/N:

Since Eclipse happens months after this timeline, they haven't had the conversation about Tanya and her sisters, so I thought it fitting to introduce it here, while they're on their way to Alaska, except have Bella be a bit more confident. Why she was insecure about Tanya in the first place is beyond my comprehension. If Edward had wanted Tanya in the slightest, the Cullens would probably never have been in Forks, so he would never have met Bella, nor ever start a relationship with her, effectively bringing all of that drama into his life :P

I will see you tomorrow for the next chapter!
