"How are you feeling?", Dr Applebaum asked over the headset.
She and Kurt were currently in her lab, but Kurt was in a separate testing room, he and Dr Applebaum were separated by a transparent wall so that he wouldn't hurt her while he tried out what he could do with his powers. They were communicating over a headset, while Kurt made the tests, she monitored his vitals to make sure he didn't overexert himself.
At that moment, he was levitating in the middle of the room. Using his gravity-manipulating powers on himself was officially a success.
"I'm getting a headache", Kurt said.
"Do you need a break?" Dr Applebaum frowned at his vitals. His pulse was high, but he didn't look like he wanted to stop. "It's okay, you already did great today."
Kurt sighed and came to the ground again. He opened the transparent door and went over to her computer. "Did I make progress?", he asked while he took a sip from the isotonic drink Dr Applebaum had mixed him.
She nodded. "You didn't get out of breath that fast when using your powers twenty minutes in a row. But we still need to make sure to progress in baby steps. Yes, you may be extraordinary, but you are still human. There is only so much your body can take. But I'm still impressed about what you are able to do. Almost jealous, even."
Their findings were indeed impressive. They found out that his powers were stronger once the sun had set, understandably. But even during the day, Kurt's abilities were not that weak. He could pretty much do whatever he wanted with the forces of gravity, even manipulate water or solid materials to some extent. However, he needed to make sure not to use his powers too much, or else, he might faint.
Dr Applebaum also knew that he must have an emotional and/or telepathic connection to this other boy and wondered whether she could convince Kurt to tell her about it.
"So…", she said tentatively. It was worth a try. "How is Blaine? How are you, for that matter?"
"I don't want to talk about it", was his cold answer.
She sighed. "Kurt, you know that I just want to help you. But I can't if you aren't one hundred percent honest to me. You can trust me, I promise." She shortly touched his shoulder.
Kurt looked down. "It scares me", he admitted quietly. "It's freaking me out. With every day that passes, those powers get stronger. I told you how my powers get stronger at night, right? Well, that's not all. I have never been a day or nightperson, but lately, I feel weaker during the day. It's not that bad, but it feels different. But that's not even the worst part about this all."
"I think I already told you that I was able to feel Blaine's emotions back then in the hallway. Today during lunchbreak, I sat three tables away from him and his friends when he accidently cut his thumb. I felt the pain too. And he knew that I felt it because he looked at me weirdly from across the cafeteria. He called me stuck-up, but guess what? He didn't say it out loud, he thought it, and I was able to hear it. One week ago, I could only hear fractions of what he is thinking, but with the passage of time, his thoughts get clearer and louder in my head. The more I try to stay away from him, the more those invisible strings pull us closer to each other, and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it."
Dr Applebaum didn't know what to say. She always thought that being in possession of such powers must be a blessing, a godsent gift. But she had no idea how hard it must be on the boys.
"I'm sorry you have to go through this, kid", she said apologetically.
"Do you understand now why I want to get rid of all that?"
Yes. Yes, she did. But still… "Listen, Kurt. I know you still hate what happened to you, but don't you want to think about it? If you want to get rid of your gift, your connection to Blaine, you might maybe break some rule of natural forces. What if there will be bad side effects or something?"
"To be honest, I don't care about that", Kurt snapped "As long as I get my old life back, I don't care about higher forces I might infuriate. Can we please continue the tests? I have homework to do."
She should have known it was pointless trying to convince him.
…
After Dr Applebaum had sent him home, Kurt just wanted to drop by the school's gym shortly because he forgot his expensive water bottle there after PE. Just when he was about to enter, he saw it. Even though cheerio practice was long over, Blaine was still practicing the dance moves they must have learned that day, all by himself. Kurt was bristling with anger while he watched him, his water bottle long forgotten.
That should have been him right now. Being a cheerio was his thing, and Blaine had the audacity to just take that away from him.
Before he knew it, Kurt found himself stomping over to the other boy, hands clenched to fists.
"Hey!", he shouted at Blaine.
The dark-haired boy turned around and scowled at him in annoyance. He pulled his earbuds out and crossed his arms. "What are you doing here?"
"I've had it with you and your shenanigans, hobbit."
Blaine incredulously cocked his eyebrows. "My shenanigans? And what about you? You are not that innocent either, hypocrite. Why do you think did I start this? I was tired of you pushing around me and my friends all the years!"
"And now, just look at you", Kurt hissed, eyes narrowed. "Look at what you have become. You said you did all this just to get back at me, to stop the oh-so evil Kurt, but you didn't notice how you became a monster yourself!"
For a while, Blaine just stared at him. But then, he shook his head and turned on his heel. "Do you know what? I don't need to listen to this nonsense. I'm leaving."
That's when Kurt snapped. He lifted his right hand, and the door was slammed shut by an invisible force.
Blaine looked back and forth between him and the door. What the hell?, he thought. For some reason, he knew that Kurt could hear his thoughts now, that's why he didn't bother saying this sentence out loud.
"You are leaving-" Kurt lifted his left hand "- if I say so." He let Blaine levitate in midair, and there was absolutely nothing he could do to stop it.
"Let me down!", he yelled angrily and flailed with his arms helplessly. "Let me down immediately, or you are so going to regret it."
Kurt ignored his warning. Instead, he just sent him flying into a set of volleyballs in the back. Blaine cursed under his breath. He was likely going to be bruised tomorrow. Beyond pissed, he scrambled to his feet again and glowered at the other boy. There was no way he was just going to get away with that. At first, he didn't want things to escalate between them, but that ship had long sailed because Blaine felt how he got mad as well.
The anger he was feeling ignited something in him, something he had tried to suppress for so long.
He lifted his hands – and was surprised when hot flames shot out of his palms.
Kurt lifted his brows, equally surprised, but still didn't look like he would back away. "You want to play?", he asked provokingly. Alright, he thought. Let's play.
Blaine channeled the energy in his hands until he held a ball of light that was floating between his palms. His eyes widened. He didn't even know he was able to do that. With everything he had, he threw the lightball at Kurt. The brunet focused on the volleyballs on the floor that came flying to him and started molding a wall in front of him. The lightball collided with the volleyballs loudly and the balls got torn up, their shreds floated to the floor.
When Kurt stared at the water dispenser to their left, it started shooting waterbeams at Blaine's direction. Instead of dodging the attack, Blaine protected himself with a shield of fire. He had absolutely no idea what he was doing right now, but he felt how the adrenaline cursed through his veins. When fire met water, a strong shockwave sent them both to the ground on opposite sides of the gymnasium.
Blaine groaned in pain and rubbed his back. Kurt didn't look better either.
Nevertheless, Blaine forced himself to get up again, determined to not let the other win this … whatever that was supposed to be.
"I know what you are thinking, hobbit." Kurt got up as well and brushed his pants. "You don't want me to win. But we both know that I'm better than you. I have the forces of gravity on my side. What do you have?"
"Oh, just shut up", Blaine huffed. Only now, he realized how close they were standing to each other, he could almost feel Kurt's breath against his face.
Why? Even though Kurt didn't move his lips, Blaine could hear every word loud and clear. The former cheerio's blue eyes were sparkling maliciously. Because you don't want to hear the truth? Guess what, Blaine: The truth hurts.
Blaine lifted his hands again to attack him, but Kurt caught his wrists. Suddenly, Blaine saw something in front of his mind's eye. Two people that were kissing each other passionately. They looked so intimate, as if they meant the world for each other. When those people pulled away, his heart skipped a beat. One of those people had been him, and the other was…
Oh god.
That couldn't be.
Why in the world would he kiss Kurt of all people?!
When he blinked, the moment was over, and he was in the present again. Kurt looked at him in shock, and that's when Blaine knew that he must have seen the same.
Perplexed, Kurt reeled back until he tripped and fell.
Blaine was too stunned to notice. What had they just seen? A glimpse into the future? What was that supposed to mean? As far as he knew, he despised Kurt. Why would he want to kiss him anytime soon?
He started to breathe heavily, then turned on his heel and sprinted out of the gym as fast as his legs could carry him. It wasn't even the fact that he would one day kiss the most despicable person he knew. It was the fact that he slowly started to be afraid of himself. In the gym, Blaine had literally felt how the fire had been flowing through his veins. He had felt Kurt's adrenaline and hatred towards him. He was sure he had heard Kurt's voice in his head. Since when was he able to feel what Kurt felt, or to hear his thoughts? Since when was he able to create light and fire with his bare hands? Since when was he in the possession of monster-like powers? Since when was he willing to use said powers to hurt people? Was he about to become a monster?
Seriously, what was happening to him?
…
"We need to break up."
Kurt had been in the middle of his rant about Blaine and his stupid schemes when his boyfriend had dropped the news. His eyes widened in shock; he almost would have dropped the cup of tea he was holding in his hands.
"W…what did you just say?", Kurt stammered. Maybe, this was just a misunderstanding.
Adam scratched his head nervously. "I just got an acceptance letter from Oxford, and I decided to return to England. And let's be honest, long-distance relationships never work out."
This was the worst date Kurt ever had. He gulped repeatedly.
"I'm so sorry, Kurt. I mean, I really like you, but we both know that it was never meant to be a longterm thing."
Those words hurt so much, even though Kurt knew deep inside that he was right. What he and Adam had was nice, but it was not like they were deeply in love with each other. They enjoyed being around each other, but that was all. Adam wasn't the love of his life. But still, the breakup was no pleasant experience.
"You are right", Kurt croaked with a lump in his throat, trying everything in his power to not burst into tears.
Adam looked at him unhappily. Nobody knew what to say, so they stayed silent for a while. When the silence became unbearable, Adam waved at the waiter so that he brought the check even though Kurt had only drank two sips of his coffee. His throat felt way too tight, there was no way he would be able to swallow anything.
Finally, they both left the Lima Bean without having finished their beverages.
Outside, it was raining.
Of course, it was.
In front of the coffeeshop, Adam hugged him stiffly, and Kurt just stood there and let it happen.
"You know, Kurt", his now ex-boyfriend said before he left. "During our last dates, all you have been talking about was this bloke Blaine and how he annoys you. You were always trying to tell me how much you hate him, but still, he was your number one topic all the time. Just think about it."
With that, Adam walked to his car, got in, and drove off.
Kurt looked after him perplexedly. Yes, he had been complaining about Blaine a couple of times when he and Adam had spent time together, but not that often. Right?
"Kurt."
Startled, he turned around. "Oh my gosh, you scared me!" Kurt held his chest and tried to calm down again.
None other than Mercedes stood behind him with her hands in the pockets of her dark trenchcoat. "We need to talk, white boy."
