Guards were on either side of my parents and I moving with us through the silent halls. We were nearing the feast hall because I could hear the increased murmurs of numerous people. At the end of the hall was a bright light. This light would bring us into the hall. As we entered through music filled our senses and people were talking. There were ten rows of tables filled with highborns eating and laughing. Servants were bringing out different foods and drinks. Father led us to the front of the hall where King Orvax was sitting at the head of the table. Orm was to the side of him talking and laughing with some of the sons of other soldiers.
When the king saw us he stood and smiled, holding up a large cup.
"Ah the guests of honor have arrived!" he said happily, his nose pink from his drink. Chairs on the side table were pulled out for us and we sat down.
"I apologize for our lateness, my king. Women must dress perfect for occasions." Father said humorously, looking at Mother and taking her hand. She smiled in return and King Orvax laughed.
"But of course! Perfection is key to power." he said. Orm looked right at me with interested eyes. I just looked down unable to look at him. King Orvax looked over at Vulko, who was sitting a few chairs away from us, and nodded. Vulko nodded and looked in the direction of the band and lowered his hands in their direction. The music began to die down which made the chatter die down as well as people were looking around.
King Orvax looked around the room.
"People of Atlantis, I want to thank you all for joining my family today! I am sure talk has already began to spread all over the ocean and now is time to bring the final word to you all." he replied. All was quiet as the king spoke, all eyes were on him. "My son, your prince, Orm will be taking the throne very soon. And now it has been proclaimed that the Odonta Clan will join the royal realms."
The room exploded in a sea of applause as eyes were on my family and I. Even Orm was clapping and smiling at me. In seconds the applause has died down and King Orvax nodded around the room.
"We all know how this happens through marriage. It has been decided and put into motion and decree that General Tyrus' first born, Taryana Odonta, will wed my son, Prince Orm Marius." he announced. Another wave of applause hit us before dying down after a few seconds. The king looked at his son who nodded and began to stand looking around at everyone in the room.
"My loyal subjects, it is a great honor to one day be your king." he said before looking at my father, "General Tyrus, it will be an even greater honor to have our families joining as one." My father nodded with pride in his eyes as his student spoke with strength. Finally, Orm looked my way and gave an honorable smile.
"Lady Taryana, with our union, a new strength will form. No bond on the surface level will ever scratch the surface of the love that will form between us." he said. I felt small beneath the gazes of everyone now as everyone was looking at me with different emotions on their faces. Beneath the table, I could feel mother grab my hand for slight comfort. "I know vows are an earthly tradition, but I feel I should pledge myself before you and all of Atlantis, that you will always be under my protection, my triton will strike down your enemies, and my palace will always be a home to you and our future children."
That seemed to strike everyone in the room now as Atlanteans were standing to their feet to cheer and clap and shout. Orm smiled at me and bowed his head at me. I swallowed and gave a soft smile to save face, bowing in response. The music began to play once more and people were rising from their chairs to dance and talk and laugh once more. Father had left the table to talk to Vulko and Mother left to speak with some of her friends as well. I didn't see any of the young girls or boys from my other educational classes. It would have made me feel a little better to see someone I knew. I looked down at the food that was brought to me. Lobster. I merely ate in silence taking in the notion that this was real. It has been announced to everyone and so it will happen.
"Taryana!" I hear someone calling my name, someone familiar. My head shoots up and I look around until I see none other than a class mate, Veridia. My eyes sparkled and I got up and glided over to her. She was a very beautiful woman. Her father is a scholar and her mother a medic. She had glowing peach skin and big red curls. She wore purple skin suit. Her arms were out and immediately we embraced.
"Oh congratulations! Once a lady and soon a queen!" she said happily. I pulled back and smiled.
"Thank you… it's still sinking in." I replied. She nodded happily, her eyes sparkling with happiness.
"Well we must celebrate!" she said. I arched a brow confused.
"Aren't we celebrating now?" I asked and she shook her head.
"No. This is a feast for the adults. We need our own space to celebrate." she purred. I knew exactly what she was talking about.
"The Gauntlet." I replied and she nodded. The Gauntlet is a spot where younger Atlanteans like to hang out at. We had our own music, our own dances and it was just an area where we could all get away from our responsibilities.
"Think you'll be able to slip away?" she asked. I looked down unsure.
"I don't know. With my new status, I don't know if I'll be expected to have an escort or not." I replied. She nodded.
"I'll come to your window tonight and we can go together and be back before it gets too late." she offered. A good idea to me. I nodded and she smiled and hugged once more before she was called away by her family. I couldn't help but find myself smiling at the thought of being able to get away. It may be the last time I actually get to go out by myself before an escort is assigned to me. As I looked around at the many different beings in this hall, I realized that soon we would no longer have equal statuses. I would be above them the more I was affiliated with the royal life. Things will be different now. Things are different now.
