Araiansu - Chapter 15

-=oOo=-

Jenna smiled as she saw Atlantis in the night sky on the small telescope she had replicated. Everything was ready, even if it was the middle of the night. This was really a lovely world. It was an uninhabited garden world in a nice region of space. They stood at the top of a hill overlooking a picturesque valley. There was even a gently flowing river around their location. The night was even warm, if not uncomfortably so.

Jenna called to the others. "I see them. They should be down soon." All the religious leaders were there, along with most everyone from Liberator including several SG teams worth of people, Janet Frasier, and Cassie.

General Hammond remained up in the Liberator with Jacob and Villa to run the systems, or rather that was the plan.

Suddenly Sam appeared in a flash of light in a white dress, while Ranma appeared in a black Tuxedo.

Moments later the rest beamed down as did Thor with General Hammond and the others appearing only seconds later.

"Greetings."

"It is good to see you Thor," said Sam.

"Ditto," said Jack.

Ranma added, "It really is good to see you."

The General said, "Thor assured me that we were free to attend."

Jack said, "Thanks Thor."

Thor blinked.

A few seconds later Heimdall beamed down. Ranma smiled, "Are you?"

"I am. It seems you have made good use of the ship we built you. I never thought I would see Atlantis again, let alone the Aurora class battle cruiser you mentioned."

Sam hugged the little guy.

"That is not necessary."

Thor said, "Heimdall has volunteered to help with your tasks. While there have been no big problems with both existing due to the separation of our universes, it is still better for both to be physically separated when possible. This seemed an excellent opportunity."

"That is great," Sam said. "You don't know how often we have missed your guidance. Heck there is a whole list of places on Atlantis we would love to have your help to explore and.."

Jack said, "Didn't someone mentioned something about a wedding?"

"Okay later."

"Of course."

Jenna said, "It's showtime Avon."

"Zen activate the lights."

Around the hilltop dozens of small aerial drones lit up transforming night to day. At the top of the hill was a flat stone dias ready and waiting. Around it were flowers of every form, somehow created by the crew of the Liberator.

Ranma walked up to her and asked, "So, do you still want to get married?"

She smiled a brilliant smile, "I suppose we must with everyone here and all."

Thor said, "I have a small surprise."

"What is it?" asked Sam.

"It is for Ranma."

"For me?"

Thor waved his hand and suddenly in a flash of light Ranma's mother was there. Behind her was Kasumi and Doctor Tofu.

Thor said, "They cannot stay. They have lives to go back to, but for this they are here."

"Mother," Ranma gasped in Japanese. She gently enfolded him in her arms. "I'm proud of you son." She then released him, only for Kasumi to pull him into a hug. "I am too. I heard you helped out my counterpart and my father. Thank you Ranma-kun." After he was let go of Doctor Tofu pulled him into his own shorter hug. "I'm so glad you could make use of the skills I taught you."

"Is Akane and Ryoga okay?"

"I was forced to work with Elder Cologne to destroy their ability to focus ki. They were too far along the wrong path to turn back. Akane has mostly recovered now and is enjoying time in college. Ryoga married Akari and is also mostly better. Both his Jusenkyo curse and the curse that causes him to so easily become lost were broken when he lost the ability to focus ki. That is, apparently, the only legitimate cure, though it has a high price."

"There was a time I would have paid it."

"But not now?"

"Never. I am glad they are okay. I couldn't see a way they could pull back enough. I kept looking, but I couldn't see one."

"Neither could we, hence the choice we made. Elder Cologne regrets the part she played in Ryoga going this far. She had always planned to help you, just as soon as you agreed to marry her granddaughter."

"That was never going to happen."

"Well, shall we get on with the wedding?"

"Sure." Ranma asked, "So who is the priest?"

Villa said, "They couldn't decide, so they are all going to do it."

Ranma laughed, and then got married, again, and then kissed the bride, again.

After the congratulations were complete Doctor Tofu called out, "Let's see what the happy couple can do."

Ranma and Sam grinned before releasing the hold they kept on their energy. The lights were cut, leaving their glowing ki as the only light. It twined and merged creating beautiful patterns. Their children each did the same creating similar patterns, bathing the area in brilliant white light.

Zen's voice came through their communicators, "Earth reports Goa'uld fleet is attacking."

"What a wedding present," complained Sam. Then she immediately focused. "Heimdall, John will you make sure Atlantis makes it to Earth?"

"We will get it done," John said.

"We will," agreed Heimdall.

"Zen beam the landing party up and prepare for emergency speed. Thor, I have no idea if you have the time."

"I will make the time,"

"Good. Let's go kill a Goa'uld."

They were quickly onboard. Thor had taken Ranma's family with him.

They ran to their stations. Sam said, "All reactors online. Do it Jenna."

"Jumping now." The ship quickly opened a window and was gone. Thor's new and improved battle cruiser did the same. Jenna said, "Twelve minutes is the best I can do. Thor is keeping up."

Avon asked, "How do you kill a part Ascended?"

Sam said, "I have an idea. We will destroy his ship's ability to fight and then tow his ship into the sun. If he blows up before then, well fine. Hopefully if he is part on this plane he won't be able to escape the pull of gravity."

"That works, but what about Nozomi?" asked Jack.

"Jack, will you Daniel and Jacob beam over to her with the module? Take anyone else you need. We will buy time if she is damaged. If she is destroyed, well let's just hope we are fast enough."

Sam looked around the bridge. Many of the religious leaders were still there. "I have to insist everyone who doesn't need to be here go to their quarters and brace themselves. We will not be stopping to beam anyone down except to support Nozomi."

They all left at their best speeds, some helped by others.

She said, "Jack,Daniel, Jacob go grab our plasma rifles from our room. If Nozomi is in trouble they may be boarded."

They ran out, and were back minutes later with several others they passed around, from the other rooms.

Jenna said, "Two minutes, if I go active with the scan I can choose where we come out, but all hope of surprise will be gone and I'll have to slow a little to let the weapons charge."

"Do it, then swap with Ranma please. I trust you, but…"

"We know."

Ranma said, "One minute. Changing course to protect Nozomi. She is in bad shape."

They emerged onto a scene of chaos. Fifty Goa'uld Ha'tak class vessels were poised above the planet, two were destroyed, and one was chasing a wounded but not destroyed Nozomi.

Jack and the others beamed away.

Sam said, "Bring us closer to Nozomi. Let our shields protect her. Thor is going to have to begin this dance."

Thor's ship emerged a second later wiping out three Ha'tak class vessels. His face appeared on Liberator's main screen. "I will buy you the time you need, but I can't take this many alone."

Sam said, "As soon as we can we will help."

Thor nodded and closed the channel.

-=oOo=-

Jack personally carried the box with the precious power module as they were beamed over. He asked, "Where do I take this?" Rommie practically ran only for Jack to struggle to keep up with her. It was almost a minute and a half later chase through the ship before she opened the door to her main power room. Jack pressed down on the top, just like the one in Atlantis. The cover moved aside and the crystal came out, nearly dark. He pulled that one out and set it down before opened the box and quickly yet carefully putting the other one in and then pushing down. It failed.

"Harder. It takes some force," said Rommie.

Jack pushed harder and the module started down. It lit up a brilliant white and the cover closed. Rommie vanished. He put the old crystal in the box and closed it before making his way back to the bridge.

All around him as he did so systems began to light up and hum with power. When he got to the bridge he heard Kasumi answer, "The ship is only lightly damaged. We pretended to be worse than we were in the hope that it would keep some of their attention on potentially obtaining the ship. Rommie was saving the final bit of energy she had for the self destruct. You barely made it in time."

"Then we can fight?" Jack asked.

Neither answered right away. Rommie merged into Kasumi by going right through her chair. Their dual toned voice said, "I need another sixty seconds for emergency repairs. I have informed the Liberator. Jack, will you take some of the guns. It is the station I'm lighting up. Liberator tells me you have had training in an ancient chair. That works similar. I hate wasting drones, and that is principally what you are going to have, so try to make them count."

"I'll do my best."

"We will be in the link to guide you, so don't freak out."

Jack nodded, even as he sat down.

Less than a minute Later Nozomi brought up its own shields and backed away from Liberator. Then they went to attack.

Jack could see in his minds eye all the priority target data being generated by Rommie and Kasumi. It seemed just dodging and providing him the data was using up most of their focus. Then again, he knew that this had to be Kasumi's first battle. He accepted each of their choices and began targeting. Goa'uld mother ships started being blown out of the sky, with the now fully charged drone weapons.

-=oOo=-

Back on the Liberator Ranma was coordinating weapons and flight simultaneously.

Sam said absently, "I almost wish we would have taken the option for weapons we could more easily aim, instead of going for the most powerful. It puts a lot of stress on the pilot in combat."

Avon said, "But it also destroys a mothership with every shot."

"Yes, there is that. How are we doing Avon? I'm sure you have a sim running."

"Well enough that if we are going to disable Apophis's ship we should do so now, before he runs."

Ranma immediately changed his course after finishing off one more ship.

Villa said, "Nozomi is coming as well. The ship reports having a targeting plan to disable without destroying the ship."

Ranma said, "Works for me. I'm not entirely sure I can do that."

The Aurora class battle cruiser launched dozens of drones, quickly swarming over and disabling, but not destroying the far larger Goa'uld mothership.

"Information. We have received a message of surrender."

"Don't care," Ranma said.

Sam added, "Agreed. Activate anti beaming countermeasures and anti personnel measures. If anyone boards from the Goa'uld vessel, kill them."

"Confirmed."

Cally said, "The tether is ready."

Avon said, "They are launching gliders. Estimate fifteen seconds. There is a cargo ship launch. It is Anubis."

Ranma quickly fired upon the main ship destroying the already crippled ship before chasing after the cargo ship.

Cally said, "Almost within tether range. If he forces a window open when the tether field is active it will destroy his ship."

"Nothing to lose. Do it," Sam said.

"Activating tether. Maximum confinement. Tether is locked."

Ranma said, "Heading for the sun."

Cally said, "There is an anomalous energy signature attempting to destabilize the tether field."

Sam said, "Zen send telemetry to Thor of this."

"Feed started."

Thor's ship quickly disengaged the other ships even as Nozomi returned to the larger fight. His ship came up beside Liberator and activated its own tether field doubling the strength of the confinement beam.

Thor appeared on the main screen. "This is working so far. One moment while I destroy his engines."

Thor's ship launched a pinpoint beam of energy at the cargo ship's engines, destroying them utterly.

"I assume the plan is to proceed toward the system's primary and then release the tethers?"

Ranma said, "That is the plan. Can you tell if it will work?"

"I do not believe it will. Anubis may be able to escape. We need to improve this plan."

Sam said, "We are open to suggestions."

Thor said, "My ship will construct a portable tether field generator and attach it to a probe. I will send instructors for your replicator to do the same."

Sam said, "Avon."

"On it."

Thirty minutes later they each had a probe created that could generate its own tether field. As they were almost at the sun they released their probes which overlaid their own tether and confinement fields. The ship continued straight into the sun, taking Anubis with it.

Their ships veered off and turned around.

Thor's appeared on their screen again, "My sensors do not detect him."

"Neither do ours," Cally added.

"Good. I need to return these three to their dimension and home and then return to the front."

Ranma waved, "Goodbye Mom, Kasumi, Ono. Thanks for coming to my wedding."

"Goodbye son. You make me so proud."

"Goodbye little brother."

"Goodbye Ranma. I wish I had the chance to teach you more."

Thor's ship left. There were only five left. Nozomi requested permission to withdraw to conserve drones. That was granted. Ranma and the Liberator easily finished four more off before the last surrendered.

Sam said, "Zen order the surviving enemy troops into cargo ships. They can take only food and weapons. Tell them they will be destroyed if they take more or if the ships are not at capacity. If any of them actually renounce the Goa'uld let us know, but don't suggest it."

"Confirmed."

Less than a minute later Zen said, "They have accepted your terms."

General Hammond came up a bit later at Sam's request. She filled him in on what she had done. He said, "Some won't like that you let any live. Others will. Some will just hate losing the cargo ships. For my own opinion, well when they hear what we did it is less likely that any more will attack us, so I think it was the correct move."

"That was my thought sir."

Ranma said, "I'm heading back to Earth."

Sam nodded.

Jack's face appeared on the screen. "How are things?"

"Good. You?"

"Well other than Rommie complaining about the time it will take to replace all those drones good, you?"

"We are fine. We are just about to asses the damage to the planet."

Rommie appeared on the screen beside Jack.

She said, "Apophis demanded the world government surrender. Since there is no world government, well this kind of descended into chaos. All the major nuclear powers refused. Most of the damage done was the first dozen missiles scattered throughout the world that were blown up on the ground before they could get in the air. The radioactive mess is going to take some time to clean up. About a million people were killed. After the missiles failed a few countries started to surrender. Russia was one of the first. The slow calls of surrender bought time, but Anubis got impatient. We headed out to do what we could and then you arrived. I have been using the satellite you provided to beam some people out of the contaminate area. It is not much, but we did what we could."

Sam said, "Well done. You don't have matter beaming?"

"Some that can be used to fix things. Nothing I'd trust to people. We didn't get that upgrade."

"You probably will as soon as we get time. For now keep using the satellite."

"I will. I could target the radioactive material. We would need some containers to put it in, but I could do that much with mine."

"I'll get some. I'll contact you when we have them."

"Nozomi out."

Sam said, "Cally, when we get in range use the transporters at your discretion to move people out of danger. Use common areas such as sports stadiums or similar for now as the destination. Make sure the transporters separate out the radioactive particles."

"Where shall I put the radioactive material?"

"I'm about to figure that out. For now try to find a deserted swimming pool. We will have to clean it up later, but that should contain it for now. Make sure you seal the drain so the water cannot be drained."

"Looking now."

Sam said, "Everyone else help her." Everyone got to work.

"Zen get me the world leaders that are directly affected. Tell them we are here to help."

Two minutes later they were all appearing on the screen. One from Russia yelled, "I demand that you fix the mess you caused!"

Sam said, "Mute Russia." He continued to yell, but no words were heard.

Sam said, "We are busy and have no time for stupid. You can either work with us or not. If the answer is not, a lot more people will be hurt. Now does anyone else want to complain?"

No one spoke. "Good. Now I need several things. First, I need a priority list of things that you can't take care of. Make sure priority means people will die or suffer terribly if this is not done, not anything less. Got it?"

They nodded. "Second, I need something to store radioactive waste in. I was thinking something like 35 gallon water tight plastic barrels about 1/3rd filled with plain water. Purer water is easier to clean later, but I wouldn't delay for that. Get them done in groups of at least twenty or so and send us the coordinates. We will beam them to a safe location outside the location of the fallout and use our transporters to place the material in the barrels. We will stay well below criticality. We will also provide the location of the barrels that are ready for pickup. Are there any questions?"

A man in a white coat stood next to the president. He asked, "How will we handle the barrels safely? The water will help, but they will still be radioactive, though keeping them below criticality will certainly help."

Sam shrugged. "Maybe take a back hoe and cover the barrels where they are with dirt. Your scientists can improve on this. Short term we just want to control the spread, so we have time for long term."

The president said, "This is the top priority. Get it done."

New barrels were quickly partially filled with water and capped. Liberator spread the first group of barrels around an area in Nevada which turned out to be the first set ready. They then activated a program Avon created which automatically scanned for and identified clusters of radioactive material and transported them to different barrels.

They were still buried in recovery two days later when Atlantis touched down in its new home in the Atlantic ocean. Heimdall quickly became involved and created Asgard transporters using the automated manufacturing factory in Atlantis and then helped install them on Nozomi. John didn't particularly like being used almost as a battery to turn everything on Heimdall needed on, but he did it without complaining. Once the second ship was added to the cleanup detail things proceeded faster. Heimdall further used the resources there to create a network of dozens of low orbiting satellites to scan for and remove contamination. The system automatically requested storage containers, which had by that time been updated to far more rugged containers be delivered where needed.

They also beamed the injured or maimed to the Liberator. Some were healed in the tubes. Choosing who got the tubes was tricky. It had to be people seriously hurt, but who didn't know they were seriously hurt, and it needed to be people who could be cycled through fairly quickly. None were awake for the procedure.

Jacob and Cally spearheaded the process. They hated having to choose, but they did it. Often times someone would come in seriously hurt, but not know the extent. They often went in as well, but just for the worst injuries. They could not afford the time to do more than that. Injuries they knew would heal perfectly fine in a hospital got routed to one. There were just too many injured. Janet supervised regular treatments or simply buying time till they could be seen.

Ranma, Sam, and the rest of their children did their best to try to heal who they could. Things were not ideal, but they did the best they could, usually trying to heal just enough that the body could do the rest.

Through it all the religious leaders that came with them stayed, gave last rights, sat in prayer, and just helped when they could. So too did the other SG-team members who came for Sam's wedding and to join the Earth Defense Force.

Finally, after two weeks of exhausting fourteen hour days they found that they had run out of critical cases.

Somehow it got out that Sam and Ranma were having a wedding when the Earth was being invaded. There were many calls for them to be replaced or even jailed. They were surprised to first see a special report from the reporter they had with them about their mission. He told how they saved an off world team that had almost gotten themselves killed. He told the lie about where the energy modules came from and how they had searched for them to be able to activate the second ship and bring back Atlantis to help protect them. He told of the crew that went over risking their lives to bring Atlantis back to the surface and then he told the story of the wedding, complete with high definition video, right through their notice of the invasion, and how they were gone in less than a minute and back to Earth in less than fifteen.

This was followed by exhausting interviews with General Hammond, Jack, Daniel, and Teal'c and all the SG team members that came with them. They told the truth of all the times they had worked to save the Earth.

Jacob, Sam's father even told the truth of his daughter and Jolinar, and then later how his own life had been saved, and how Ranma had saved his daughter's life and together they had brought back the ship that helped save them all.

The various religious leaders also were interviewed by press all over the world. They supported all that was said.

Carlos Alverez gave an interview. "I would normally say, Let he who has no sin throw the first stone, but there was no sin here, except perhaps in one area. We need to know what happened to the communication device left to radio the Liberator in case of problems. I was there when the warning was heard. It was only minutes before we were onboard and gone. It took us very little time to return here. The hours of delay before that message was sent must be accounted for. A lot of death was caused by the failure of that message to be sent sooner."

The president gave a press conference two hours later. He announced that the National Intelligence Directorate had stolen the transmitter from the device and that the delay was caused by the time it took to track it down. It would have been longer, but thankfully there were a few people in the NID still loyal to the country that rushed it back. Congress planned to vote to dismantle the NID in the coming week.

A lot of people were very angry at the administration because of this failure. The Liar spent hours and hours blasting them for it. Threats of impeachment abounded.

The president pointed out that the action was not authorized, and that the NID was not even created under his administration, and that there had been many attempts to reign them in, but they were consistently blocked by members of the opposition party. It didn't help much.

-=oOo=-

In another news special the same reporter showed how the fledging EDF members did their jobs as best as they were able and how they regularly worked fourteen or more more hours a day repairing the planet and healing the people.

The reporter went on to show a video of a very sick young girl who had developed cancer from the radiation which had spread throughout her body.

In the video Ranma asked, "Do you want to see a trick?"

"Sure," she half said and wheezed, having a hard time to catch her breath.

Ranma picked up a bottle of water that set nearby and poured a bit over his arm. Within a second he became a she.

"Do it again!" The last was barely heard, even if emphatic.

"I will later, for now we need to see to you. You have something called cancer. Do you know what that is?"

The little girl nodded.

"Good, now I know a few magic tricks. I'm going to try to heal you. Is that okay?"

"Really? I didn't think magic was" She coughed and wheezed. "real."

"Well this technically isn't magic, but it is still really neat. I just need you to do me a favor."

"Wha favor?"

"I need you to try to hold still. Can you do that for me?"

She nodded.

Ranma laid down on the bed beside her. She said, "This is going to take all my concentration. I'm going to touch your head with my hands. Is that okay?"

The little girl nodded.

Ranma's hands gently cupped the girl's face, but didn't touch her otherwise. Soft white light spread from her hands covering the girl and sweeping back over both their bodies. They watched as minute after minute then hour after hours the little girl slowly improved even as neither of them moved a muscle. Finally nearly three hours later Ranma gently let go and climbed out of the bed.

Ranma asked softly, "What can you tell me Zen?"

"The medical scanners in your area no longer detect the presence of cancer in the child in front of you. Further inspection is highly recommend, as those sensors do not have the resolution to…"

"I know Zen," Ranma cut off. "I know well how hard it is to stop cancer that has spread so far. I think I got it all. I hope I got it all. Zen attach the records we have on this girl and her current state and request when a scanner will be available."

A few minutes later Cally said, "It will be a couple days. Do you really think you got it all?"

"I hope I did. I really do. Can we afford to keep her up here till it is available?"

"She can stay in my room. I already have three others waiting, but I can take one more."

Ranma yawned tiredly. "Thanks daughter."

"You really should sleep. You can't do any more miracles with ki if your too tired to use it safely."

"Your right. I'll sleep in this other bed, but feel free to wake me if you need it or me."

"We will."

Ranma climbed into the next hospital bed and was instantly out like a light. The video sped forward six hours.

The little girl woke, no longer having trouble breathing and looking healthy. She looked at Ranma's so very still form with a worried look.

She had almost got the nerve to poke her when a young woman came in and said softly, "Please let my dad sleep. He, well she at the moment needs it."

The girl looked up at her curiously then back at the sleeping woman.

"Would you like to get something to eat?"

The girl bobbed her head.

"Come on then. Follow me. I'll show you to my room. There are a few others there. Maybe you can make a new friend?"

The girl brightened.

The young woman looked back at her father with concern. She said, "I need a few minutes."

The young girl nodded. The young woman's hands begin to glow softly as they were place above her now female father's stomach. The girl looked on in curiosity as energy flowed from the young woman to the woman on the bed for several minutes.

The young women seemed to wilt a little towards the end before the flow of energy tapered off. She then walked slowly down the long corridors of the ship to her room where several other children were playing. She herself sat against the wall and rested.

The girl she went to get asked, "Are you okay?"

"Just tired. The others can get you anything you need." The young woman fell asleep leaning against the wall.

The little girl curled up on her lap and fell asleep too. The others in the room seeing this got very quiet. One asked quietly, "Shouldn't someone help them? They fixed me. They fixed us all. Will no one fix them? They always seem so tired."

The reporter's voiced said clearly. "I was there on that great ship created by our allies the Asgard as they first saved lives on one world, before undertaking a dangerous journey to obtain that which was necessary to bring the great city of Atlantis back home, and then, only at the end they took a small amount of time for a wedding. They were the ones flying the city home. It could not go as fast. They took for their own time less than two hours, and then when their home was threatened they came back as fast as humanly possible, including bringing help that was only there to see their wedding. Without that help, would we have survived?"

"Without the precious power module the other great ship that survived these thousands of years would have been destroyed. They were preparing to sacrifice themselves even as help arrived. Without all of them the radioactive nightmare we expected to live, we would be living."

"I know many of you are seduced by false voices. The snake has always been able to twist some ears that hear what they wish to hear. That is a tale as old as time and told in one form or another in every corner of the world. Still, it was not lies that saved us, but people, and a great deal of hard work. Even that miracle of healing was not a work of God, but a work of a man who had worked very hard for the skills he has and is, as he can, teaching others, including his own daughter who gave of herself to give back what her father had given away. Finally, I would ask you to look here at this larger room. We have gathered about ten percent of the people they saved or healed."

The close in view zoomed out to show instead of a field surrounded by close to a thousand people, and then zoomed in on one particular little girl who was staring at a little ball of energy in her hand as other kids crowded around.

"Yes, the little girl was changed. Few could not be I am told when exposed to so much healing energy. Ranma's daughter Cally has already given her a few lessons in how to call upon what she was given. I am told it will be at least a decade before she learns enough and knows enough about medicine to be able to safely heal, and even then great care must be taken including followup visits. I am also told they are certain there is still a piece they lack in their healing abilities, but that they have and will continue to do their best."

"Already that young girl has a promise for all her education to be paid for several times over, from people, organizations, and the finest schools. They believe as I do that she will eventually learn this miraculous skill and perhaps be able to teach others. Many others are in similar if less advanced states."

"From that terrible day there have been miracles, that yes, I believe that while done by man, were there because of the gifts and the potential God has put in our souls. The key is men and women acted and did their part. That is why I believe we are at the dawn of a new age for mankind. We need only do our parts, reject lies, and love truth and I believe we will get there."
