Chapter 2
Harry
Shortly after nine in the morning, Harry found himself knocking on Hermione's office door. When he entered, he was unsurprised to see two empty cups of tea on the witch's desk. Her thick brown curls hid her face as she read a piece of parchment on her desk before looking up at him and smiling.
"Do you ever leave here?" He questioned, indicating the cups on her desk.
With a flick of her wand, she made them disappear. "Not all of us are able to stay in our bosses' good graces no matter how late we are," she retorted.
He gave her a half smile. It was true that Harry was treated unfairly well as an Auror. For example, he had not gone through Auror school before earning his place in the department. Although he'd used some of his privilege to his advantage, he hated any reminder of his fame and the scar on his forehead.
"I need a favor," he said to her, sitting in the red chair across her desk. This suddenly felt reminiscent of their school days, asking Hermione's help on homework.
"You didn't read it, did you?" she asked, smirking.
"I promise I tried!" Harry exclaimed, knowing Hermione would save him. "But no, I didn't finish and I don't know what recommendations to give at the meeting in twenty minutes."
Hermione laughed. She handed him the fourteen inch parchment she'd finished earlier in the morning. "I'm assuming you won't read that either but it basically says we need to investigate Roswell."
"Roswell?" Harry couldn't place the name of the city.
"Roswell, New Mexico. It's in the United States. In the muggle world, They're known for a UFO crash in 1947. The muggle US government was maybe hiding a conspiracy. I don't think wizards ever looked into it." Harry loved that Hermione applied herself at the same level now, to her job, as she had their entire time at school. She had helped him with numerous of these recommendations over the years, even ones she wasn't fully involved with.
"Maybe we should go," Harry replied thinking about how he had recently been lamenting the time he spent reading documents instead of being in the field.
"The meeting doesn't start for ten minutes," said Hermione, peering at her watch.
"No, I mean Roswell. You and me. I bet we could convince them to send Ron too. Although he didn't make the Roswell connection, he did write the report! It'd be fun. The Golden Trio. Adventuring." He knew he sounded like he needed adrenaline in his life, and the truth was maybe he did. Harry hadn't realized that he had actually enjoyed the adventures they went on and the mysteries they had solved at school. The last few years had become increasingly dull to him. He had thought a life as an Auror would mean adventure, but the importance of his name afforded him a lot more paperwork than he expected. The idea of spending time with his best friends away from the office thrilled him more than it should.
Hermione just smiled and stood up. "We'll be late for our meeting."
Hermione
The idea of an adventure with Harry and Ron swirled in her mind as Hermione stood and walked around her desk. She knew the rose colored glasses were playing a significant role in her thinking, but she remembered their time on the run fondly. Even though she hadn't been learning in a classroom, Hermione thought of all the magic she'd actually practiced. Now, as a confederation member, she mostly made recommendations to other witches and wizards. She liked the idea of visiting a new country, a new city.
And (if she was being totally honest with herself), the idea or traveling with Harry again appealed to her. Nothing had bonded their relationship quite like their time on the run or in the Forest of Dean and she wanted that closeness again. Ron, too, she supposed. She vaguely wondered if Ginny would mind Harry traveling as the Golden Trio again.
She stepped into the meeting room she saw Ron sitting at the table already, parchment scattered around him. She could see the pink ears beneath his fiery hair, betraying the sense of stress and worry he felt. Harry walked past her and patted Ron on the shoulder.
"Okay, mate?" he asked. Ron looked up and saw them both.
He smiled. "Better when I know Hermione will save my arse."
"I said the same thing," Harry grinned. "Hermione's got an idea and I think you're gonna like it."
Ron sighed and smoothed his robes. "I hate being put in charge of things. Dad's trying to give me more and more responsibility. Never should've agreed to work for him."
Hermione had a feeling Ron would jump at the idea Harry had suggested. Aside from Ron usually following whatever plan Harry thought of, Hermione also knew Ron was finally returning to the boy she'd once known. Whereas a few years ago he might have seen this as a betrayal to his family, he might actually enjoy the idea of doing some discovery work himself.
The room began to fill up and Harry and Hermione took seats in the front near Ron. When the room was mostly full, Hermione gave Ron an encouraging smile to start. She thought Ron did a relatively nice job going through the research he'd found but knew that his occasional stammering and adjusting his collar would be frowned upon.
When he finished, Hermione stood up to give her report findings. She gave Ron an encouraging smile as he sunk into the closest chair, sweat dripping off his face.
"I met with Harry Potter of the Auror Department and we feel that the most significant findings of the reports is Roswell, New Mexico," Hermione began, avoiding eye contact with Harry.
"Roswell?" Hermione's boss, Cain Vollins, asked.
"The name keeps cropping up on uninvestigated incidents. The events aren't listed as spells being casted, but something's amiss. Even the muggles have noticed. They've been reporting unusual incidents since 1947 when an unidentified flying object landed outside the city."
She could tell her boss was intrigued.
"Anyone living in the area?"
"Two people," Hermione said.
"And why aren't the MAGUSA involved?" he inquired.
"That's the part that's confusing to me. Maybe they were doing magic without spells? Or maybe they're hiding something?"
"And what's your recommendation?" Vollins grilled.
"I think we need to go there to find out. I'd like to see this through. Ron would be helpful since he has great working knowledge of the report." Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ron ogle him. "And it would be helpful to have an Auror like Harry if things get out of hand."
"The golden trio again?" Vollins laughed. "Sure. If their bosses approve it, I don't see why not."
