"So, werewolves?" Marie was startled by her sister's sudden question and her presence in her room which usually warranted a knock. Marie took a few seconds under her sister's questioning gaze to decide what she was going to say.
"How did you find out?" Before she said anything she needed to know what all Allison knew.
"Kate took me to this place underground somewhere and showed me Derek Hale chained up with claws and fangs." Marie closed her eyes in frustration and anger towards her aunt, ignoring for a moment the annoyance and betrayal that she could practically feel coming off of her twin.
"Are you going to tell me anything or are you just going to sit there and pretend like this is completely normal?" She wasn't yelling but this was the most Marie had seen her sister raise her voice in anger in a long time.
"Do you remember when I told you to trust me and that I would explain everything?" Allison nodded, placated at the idea of finally being told the whole truth.
"Okay, well I'm going to tell you everything and I'm going to need you to trust me and not be mad at me because every single thing I've done and said since coming to this town has been for you." Allison looked confused but desperate enough for answers that she didn't say anything just nodding to let her sister know that she understood and agreed to her terms. After all, Allison knew Marie better than anyone else in the world despite all the secrets they had been keeping from each other since arriving in Beacon Hills. She knew the way her sister's mind worked. While Allison was open and expressed her emotions easily and often, Marie tended to compartmentalize her feeling and stay closed off to the world, only accessible to those who could see past the mask of indifference she wore. Allison also knew that her twin was the closest person in the world to her and wouldn't have kept this secret from her without a good reason. So when Marie asked Allison to trust her she did.
"I guess I should start with the night we came to Beacon Hills. Do you remember that guy I had told you about that I met in the woods who helped me when I got lost?" Allison nodded, recalling that night and the conversation they had when their dad had returned home with Marie.
"Well, that was Derek Hale and I had just been chased by the alpha that's been killing people-which I assume Kate told you about- and Derek helped me get away from it after I called Kate and she told me to shoot it like it was no big deal." When Marie finished describing her first encounter with the alpha and Kate's role in what happened that night Allison was speechless. When she didn't say anything Marie continued,
"I didn't know about werewolves or our family's involvement until that Friday when we went to Lydia's party that Scott ditched you at and Derek drove us home from. After he dropped us off here I left and went to the preserve and confronted Derek about being a werewolf after overhearing him say it and made him tell me about how our family had anything to do with it which is when I first found out about the hunting."
By then Allison had sat down on the edge of Marie's bed as she processed all of the information she was getting while Marie had stood up and started pacing, finding it easier to be active while sifting through the event in her head and deciding what all to tell Allison so she would know everything she needed to.
"I snuck out to meet Derek a few more times after that while you were with Scott and convinced him to let me help find and deal with the alpha. That's why I was at the school that night we were trapped in, I had come with Derek but the alpha injured him and I was going to use the fact that the alpha was distracted by Scott and Stiles to my advantage but then you showed up with Lydia and Jackson and I became more interested in making sure you got out safe."
"Wait so what happened after Kate showed up in town? Did she say anything about what happened the night we got here or did she already know that you knew?" Allison asked.
"No, Kate didn't say anything about it until I asked her and no one in the family knew that I had any clue about what was going on yet at that point. Though I was also kind of busy worrying about keeping Derek alive after she shot him with a poisoned bullet on her way into town so I didn't get the chance to confront her about everything until later.
"Then I ended up confronting dad about the secrets after the night we were trapped in the school because he and Kate had found a bullet of mine in the school that I shot at the alpha and I convinced him to train me."
"Wait, if dad and Kate both knew that you knew then and agreed to train you then why wasn't I told?" Marie winced at her sister's question.
"That's my fault. Dad asked what my plan was for telling you because he never wanted either of us to know anything yet and I told him that I wasn't going to tell you until after the alpha had been dealt with, I guess he decided that he would take as long as he could get of you not knowing before a spilled all the family secrets." Upon hearing that her sister was part of the reason she had been left in the dark, Allison made no attempt to hide her irritation.
"Kate told me that they hadn't decided if they were going to tell me because they don't think I can handle it and they think I'll react badly. Is that true?" Marie sighed and turned to face her sister who had stood up, leaving them standing face to face. She took her twin by the shoulders and looked her steadily in the eye.
"Allison I don't know why mom and dad never told us or why they are still keeping it from you after finding out that I know, that's something you would have to ask them, but I can promise you that that's not what I think about you. The only reason I ever lied or kept things from you was to protect you."
"I can protect myself," Allison said quietly but not without a hint of her former anger.
"I know, trust me, but that is exactly why I didn't tell you. I know you can and will protect yourself and the people that you care about and I didn't want you diving head first into this mess without knowing everything that you need to know and I wanted to be the one to tell you because I never trusted anyone else to tell you everything truthfully. If I had left it to dad he would of left things out hoping you wouldn't get involved or pushed you too hard to make you want out, Kate would have manipulated you into some mini version of her wanting to prove to dad that she was right, and I really didn't want you to find out by coming face to face with a werewolf that could kill you. Unfortunately, I just haven't had the time to sit down and tell you everything and help you train."
"Oh," Allison said, not sure what else she could say to her twin who she could tell was being completely honest. Marie just watched her sister for a reaction, any sign that she was upset or angry with her.
"What did Kate tell you?" she finally asked when she didn't see any sign of anger from her sister.
"She told me to act normal while she got things ready for the next part-catching the other beta." Marie started pacing again at the thought of Derek chained up somewhere and what her aunt may do to him if she got the chance. She felt a small sliver of concern for Scott but not as much as she might have a few weeks ago before he hurt Allison and they broke up. For now, her main concern was Derek. And the alpha, a voice in her head said reminding her what she should be concerned about, what Derek would tell her to worry about. When had Derek become more important to her than catching the alpha? All she had been focused on since coming to Beacon Hills was stopping the alpha and keeping her sister safe. It didn't matter though, even if Derek would tell her not to worry about him and focus on the alpha…who was his uncle. She needed a plan.
"Marie? What should I do?" Allison asked when her sister hadn't said anything for a while. After a moment Marie turned to face her with a determined look in her eye.
"Listen to me very closely, I have a plan. There's something I need to tell you that Kate doesn't know yet."
Marie was on her way to the preserve after getting a text from Kate telling her to meet her at the Hale House when she got a phone call. It was a number she didn't recognize but she answered anyways in case it was important.
"Hello?"
"Marie? It's Scott. I know you probably don't want to talk to me but please don't hang up."
"Scott? Why are you calling me? Whose phone are you even using, I don't recognize this number."
"It's Stiles' phone, I lost mine when the hunter took Derek. That's why I'm calling, to see if you knew or if you could tell me anything.
"Yeah I know they have Derek and I'm going to deal with it, just let me handle it. If that's all you wanted to say then-"
"No, no that's actually not even the main reason I was calling. I just wanted to let you know that Peter showed up at the animal clinic and threatened Allison."
"He did what!" Marie said through clenched teeth forcing herself to calm down and remember her plan. This didn't change anything, everything was still going according to plan she just needed to be smart about how she went about this.
"Yeah, he said-" Marie cut him off.
"I don't care what he said Scott, if he's going after Allison then you need to be watching her at all times. Do not let her out of your sight. I'll handle the Derek situation but I need you to watch out for Allison." She hung up after she finished giving him instructions knowing that he would do what she said. It was the one reason she was still protecting him, he would do anything to keep Allison safe. Well, that and the code that her family followed but she had only recently been included in the hunting business and she had her own set of priorities Protecting her sister was at the top of her list.
Marie left her car near the entrance to the preserve and went the rest of the way to the Hale house on foot. She knew the way from memory with how many times she had come out to the woods to meet up with Derek. Her aunt was waiting for her.
"God, you were quick. Like you were waiting for something to do. Were you getting bored?" Kate joked. Marie played along,
"Definitely, can you imagine being in the middle of a werewolf hunt and having to take a break to go to high school?" Kate laughed and Marie took it as a good sign.
"Why am I here?" Kate's face turned serious so fast that Marie wondered-not for the first time- just how much of a psychopath her aunt actually was.
"You are here because I have a lead on the other beta and I need someone to keep an eye on things here." Marie had been expecting this to have something to do with Derek but was thrown by her aunt's new 'lead'. There was no way she already knew about Scott.
"What new lead?" She asked Kate but Kate wasn't paying her very much attention.
"Oh, nothing important yet. I'll fill you in if it turns out to be real." Marie wasn't sure if her aunt was just being evasive because she thought it gave her more power or if she was starting not to trust her niece. Whatever it was, Marie just had to hope that if she did find out about Scott that she would have to wait a little longer to act on the information. Otherwise, she would need a new plan.
Kate had pointed Marie towards the entrance to the tunnels that led to underneath the Hale House before she made her exit giving her niece no further explanation. Marie hastily made her way to the end of the tunnels where she could hear lots of noise coming from and slid open the heavy metal door.
In front of her was a sight she had expected but was still not ready to see. Derek was shirtless and chained up to a fence and another hunter that she didn't know or care enough to name was holding a baseball bat while electricity was running through the wires that Derek was hooked up to.
"What are you doing here?" the hunter asked. Marie turned her eyes to him and said in a cold voice,
"Kate sent me. You're free to go. I've got things from here."
"But-"
"Go," she said pointedly in a firm voice that left no room for argument. Reluctantly the hunter turned to leave, sliding the door shut as he made his exit. As soon as they were alone, Marie quickly made her way to the controls and turned off the flow of electricity causing Derek's body to relax and lose tension.
"Hey, are you okay?" she said carefully, moving towards him. He didn't say anything but she saw him nod and didn't ask for more, knowing he must be exhausted. Once she was right in front of him she cupped his face with her hands as the only way she could think of to physically comfort him in the position he was in.
"I'm so sorry," she uttered so quietly she might have been worried he didn't hear her but she knew he did.
"It's not your fault," he said, his voice raspy and strained, probably from yelling out in pain. She let her hand drift down to his bare torso hovering lightly over the bruises that she knew had to be from the nameless hunter's baseball bat that hadn't healed yet because of how much electricity Kate had used on him to keep him from shifting. She grimaced and pulled her hands away from his skin quickly at the thought of all the things Kate had probably done to him, and it was all her fault.
Her pain was quickly turning into fear and doubt. Maybe her plan wasn't as great as she had thought. Maybe she should just leave all of this to the real hunter like her dad and her aunt who had actual experience hunting werewolves.
"Hey," her head jerked up when Derek called out to her and she turned her attention back to him, "remember the plan." She gaped at him.
"Are you kidding? My plan is the reason you're here! I planned for you to be kidnapped and interrogated by my aunt!"
"I agreed to it and I don't regret it." Marie shook her head,
"Well, I do." His eyes softened just enough for her to notice but he didn't say anything. She moved towards him once again until they mirrored the position they were in just a day before, her body so close to his that she could feel the heat coming off his skin, their faces so close that when she looked up into his eye she felt like she could see every single thing he was feeling and thinking.
"I didn't mean for you to be in pain," she said quietly.
"We both know that it was a possibility and we both agreed that it was worth it. Besides, I'm not feeling any pain right now." They stayed like that for a few moments before Derek broke the silence.
"I would kiss you right now but I'm a bit tied up." Marie laughed loudly at the absurdity of Derek Hale making a joke in such a serious situation when he was usually the more serious of the two. Even when her laughter died down she was grinning and so was he. She was happy to see more of him like this, the part of him that he only occasionally let her see when they were alone and he let his guard down enough that she could see who he was underneath all of the pain and grief of losing his family that he held onto.
Without saying anything else, she pushed herself up onto her toes and brought their lips together in a searing kiss. Derek immediately tried to deepen it but couldn't due to his restricted movement and Marie instantly pushed herself as close up against him as possible so that their bodies were firmly pressed together. She slid her hands up into his hair, pulling his head down closer to her even though there was little room left between them.
When they pulled apart they stayed close with Marie pressing her forehead to his while Derek inhaled deeply, taking in her scent.
"I don't want to leave you here with them," she whispered.
"I'll be fine now that I know your still safe, you can't do anything to let Peter or your family know that we know each other. You have to stick to the plan." She nodded and took a deep breath, pressing one more hungry kiss to his lips before pulling back. She took a few moments to compose herself and rein in her emotions. She had a plan. Whatever was going on between her and Derek was unimportant and could wait. It had to.
"Are you really not going to the dance?" Marie sighed. Her sister had called her on her way to the formal with Jackson to ask her sister-not for the first time- to reconsider her decision to go to the dance. Unfortunately for Allison, Marie couldn't afford to go to the dance in the midst of everything else going down, even to keep and eye on her sister. It was the worst part of her plan, for this she would have to trust Scott and Jackson of all people with her sister's safety and hope that Peter would wait until after the dance to finish his revenge killing.
"Yes Allison I'm really not going and you can change my mind by pestering me about it. Just be careful and remember what I told you, no matter what happens in the next day or so, stay calm and keep an open mind." She hung up on her sister not wanting to give her a chance to ask any more questions.
Marie was currently in the garage at her house, getting ready. She didn't know exactly when all the pieces of her plan would fall into place but she was going to be ready no matter what. With all her weapons laid out in front of her, she made sure that she had plenty of wolfsbane bullets and many other means of dealing with an alpha that she had acquired by raiding her dad and Kate's stock.
Once she had armed herself with more weapons than anyone would be able to see, she pulled out her phone and started tracking her dad and Kate. She still had time. She just had to hope that they worked faster than Peter.
She waited.
When she got a text from Stiles she knew it was almost time.
Stiles: Jackson told your dad about Scott!
Then it was time for Marie to go. She got in her car and drove towards the next part of her plan sparing barely seconds to send a text to the only person who could kickstart this part of the plan.
