Marie sat in the woods of the preserve until her fingers turned numb from the cold. She had only been there for more than an hour but sitting in the dark, unable to move to keep anyone who might be nearby from hearing the rustle of leaves and finding her meant that she was barely generating any body heat to keep her warm.
As soon as she had heard that her dad knew about Scott she had texted Allison. She had given Allison instructions the day before on what to do when this happened.
The day before.
"Peter Hale is the alpha." Allison was stunned at her sister's revelation.
"What? Hale like Derek? I thought his family died in a fire?" Marie nodded,
"They did, his uncle was the only one in the fire who survived but he's been comatose for the last six years. I just found out a few days ago that he was the alpha."
"Okay so now that you know who it is what are you going to do? Tell dad?" Marie shook her head.
"No, I have a plan, but I need your help. You have to go along with everything Kate says and make sure she's occupied because if she finds out about Peter too soon then it will ruin everything. So, for now, you need to pretend like you only know what she's told you and stay close to her."
"What about Derek?" Marie ignored the pang in her chest that she felt every time the topic of Derek being held captive by her aunt was brought up.
"I'm going to deal with that which is why you need to keep Kate occupied. She doesn't really care about Derek, she already knows he's not the alpha by now. She's only keeping him so she can catch the alpha and find out who the second beta is. She's going to ask you to help her catch the second beta and you have to agree. You have to keep her occupied and keep me updated."
"Okay, but what do I do if we actually catch this other beta that she wants us to go after? What will she do to it? Do you know who it is?" Marie nodded silently, trying to decide whether or not she should tell Allison about Scott.
"I know who it is but I can't tell you," Allison started to protest but Marie cut her off, "Look, you can be upset with me but I can't say anything because it's not my secret to tell." Allison nodded, reluctantly accepting the fact that she wouldn't be getting anything out of her sister about this other beta.
"So what do I do when we catch it? Will she kill it?" Marie shook her head.
"No, she won't kill it until she knows that it won't help her catch the alpha, that's the one she really wants. She'll keep the beta alive long enough to dig for answers and by then everything should be in place, you just have to make sure you have your bow and be ready."
"Ready for what?"
"To help me kill the alpha."
Present.
Marie just hoped Allison would be able to keep Kate occupied. When she found out about Scott there was no doubt that she would be shaken but Marie had faith in her sister. She was stronger than anyone ever gave her credit for. She didn't have quite as much faith in Scott, though. She had a feeling that losing Allison again might break him so she gave him a little nudge, something to help him find Derek before Peter:
Marie: You need to free Derek before Peter. Wolves howl to signal their location to each other.
She knew from tracking her family's phones that Allison and Kate had been sent away but she thought it was foolish of her dad to believe that Kate would actually listen. When she saw that they were driving to the hospital, though, she was confused. Well, she was confused until Allison's name showed up on her phone.
"Allison? Why are you and Kate at the hospital? You guys are supposed to be wolf hunting by now."
"Did you know that Lydia would get hurt? Was this in your plan? You should have told me about Scott!" Allison sounded upset and Marie didn't fully understand why until she got the picture her sister sent her of their friend lying in a hospital bed covered in bruises and bite marks.
"Peter," Marie said, ignoring the comment about Scott. That was not her mess to sort out.
"Yeah, he attacked her at the dance. Jackson found her. Hadn't you heard?" Marie sighed,
"No Allison I hadn't heard about this and I definitely didn't plan for this but it's just one more reason we need to stop him so you need to do your part and get Kate in place." Allison didn't say anything but Marie assumed she had nodded from how well she knew her twin.
"Okay." It was quiet and that was all her sister said before hanging up but Marie knew that it meant she would do what she had to. Allison hadn't even asked about Scott but Marie knew she would be hurt that she had been lied to.
The young huntress pulled herself up off the leafy floor of the woods and made her way into the tunnels that led underneath the Hale House quickly and quietly.
Derek had heard her coming and was waiting for her. Luckily there were no hunters with bats with him this time. Marie knew she only had minutes before another one of Kate's men showed up.
"Hey," she said to Derek quickly.
"Hey, what going on?" he demanded when he saw her. She shook her head.
"Nothing just wanted to let you know that it's happening."
"What? Now?" Marie nodded.
"Yeah it's a bit soon but I thought Peter would wait just a little longer. I had planned for the dance to at least have finished before everything was set in motion." Derek saw her unease at not being in complete control and tried to ease her mind. If she was prepared then this whole thing could turn into a disaster.
"It doesn't matter. Is everything in place?" Marie nodded going through everything in her plan in her head.
"Yeah everyone's right where they're supposed to be. I'm not as sure about Peter but I think Stiles is with him so that should slow him down some." Now, she wasn't completely sure that she was right about Stiles being with Peter but when Allison had told her that Jackson was the one who found Lydia even though Stiles was the one who took her to the dance she had become fairly certain. Especially because if Lydia had been attacked by Peter while Stiles was her date he would definitely have known.
Marie and Derek were both taken by surprise when they heard a howl. Derek's head shot up.
"It's time. You have to go." He told her. Marie nodded and kissed quickly before running back out of the tunnels. This time instead of sitting on the ground, Marie hoisted herself up into a tree and perched on a branch where she was high enough to be out of eyesight but low enough that she could see everything and jump down without hurting herself.
Once she had picked a spot she pulled out her gun and made sure it was loaded with the wolfsbane bullets she had stolen from her aunt.
She also had her batons and a few knives but she knew that the wolfsbane would be most effective against Peter. She checked her phone one more time to make sure everyone was where they need to be when she saw that she had a million messages from Stiles of all people.
Stiles: PETER ATTACKED LYDIA!
Stiles: PETER IS MAKING ME HELP HIM FIND DEREK!
Stiles: LYDIA'S IN THE HOSPITAL!
Stiles: ANSWER YOUR PHONE!
Stiles: SCOTT IS MISSING!
Stiles: THE POLICE KNOW THAT THE HALE FIRE WAS ARSON!
Stiles: ANSWER YOUR PHONE!
Stiles: YOUR DAD JUST SHOWED UP AT THE HOSPITAL! WHAT DO I DO!
The last one had just shown up and after seeing that Kate and Allison were almost to preserve and Derek and Scott hadn't emerged from the tunnels yet she called Stiles.
"Why haven't you been answering your phone? Did you get my messages?"
"Stiles there's no time for questions. You have to tell my dad it was Kate. Tell my dad that Kate was the one who was responsible for the Hale fire and that she has Derek."
"What? Why? What is that going to do?"
"Just do it!" she practically growled into the phone, not liking how much she sounded like Derek at that moment, before she hung up and put her phone away. There was nothing else she could do now. She was officially out of time. Kate was only minutes away with Allison, Scott and Derek were still in the tunnels, and Peter was who knows where. Hopefully, he would be late and try to make a dramatic entrance because if he showed up now then the plan would be ruined.
Allison
Allison was terrified. She had seen her boyfriend turn into a werewolf and her best friend lying in a hospital bed looking dead all in less than 24 hours. Not to mention her sister who had been eerily absent the whole time like some silent puppet master for everything that had been going on.
Honestly, Allison was a little bit disturbed at the thought of this plan Marie supposedly had. She didn't know all of the details but everything she had told Allison about their parent and Kate had been right on point and every single time the two girls spoke to one another Marie already knew what was going on even when she wasn't there. Well except Lydia.
"You ready for this?" Kate said, pulling Allison out of her thoughts. They had stopped at the entrance of the preserve and Kate had put the car in park. Allison nodded wordlessly trying not to give anything away before they both got out of the car and she went to the trunk to get out her bow and arrows. Kate had given her flash bolts and told her what to do in the car.
Now, they were walking through the woods towards the Hale house, right where Marie had said they would end up.
Kate was silent the whole way, something that unnerved Allison. She had never seen her aunt this serious before they had moved to Beacon Hills.
When they came upon the two male figures standing in front of the Hale House Kate stopped her by holding out a hand and motioning for her to crouch down behind a log they had stopped near. Allison had no idea where Marie was or if she had kept Kate occupied long enough but her sister had reassured her that once they caught the betas she would handle things so she decided to trust her sister.
Allison fired two arrows at Derek Hale under her aunt's instruction and then a flash bolt which blinded Scott. Then they started running.
Marie
Scott and Derek finally emerged from the tunnels. They stopped before getting far from the Hale House but she couldn't hear what they were saying. From where she was sitting on her perch in the trees she could see Allison and Kate approaching but Scott and Derek showed no sign of knowing they were there.
Allison fired two arrows at Derek. That got the werewolves' attention. They were blinded by the flash bolt her sister shot next but Marie looked away when she heard Kate's instructions to Allison.
Derek pulled the arrows out and the two wolves made an attempt to retreat but Kate and Allison followed. Allison spoke to Scott who had given up on getting away and Marie was proud of her sister. She was very convincing.
"Thank god, now shoot him before I shoot myself." Kate's words startled everyone and Marie narrowed her eyes. She knew her aunt was responsible for the Hale fire but this was the first time the younger huntress was seeing actual evidence of Kate breaking the code that the hunters were supposed to live by.
"You said we were just going to catch them," Allison said, no doubt starting to get nervous. Marie had promised she would take care of things if they got this far but she saw no signs of Peter or her dad so if they didn't show up then she was going to have to intervene herself.
"And we did that. Now we're going to kill them. See," Kate shot Derek and Marie flinched but knew that Kate hadn't actually killed him, she hadn't even aimed. She was just trying to make a point to Allison,
"Not that hard." Marie didn't listen to what Kate said after that because now she was walking towards Scott with a gun and pushing Allison out of the way. Marie readied her gun and was preparing to drop down to the ground to stop Kat when she heard her father's voice.
"Kate! I know what you did. Put the gun down." Marie sighed in relief, never having been so thankful for her father to show up. She would have intervened to save Scott from Kate but then she was losing one advantage she had for when Peter showed up and she would need every advantage she could get to beat him.
"I did what I was told to do," Kate said calmly, with a hint of anger.
"No one asked you to murder innocent people. There were children in that house, ones who were human. Look what you're doing now, you're holding a gun to a sixteen-year-old boy with no proof he spilled human blood. We go by the code. Now put the gun down," her dad raised his own gun and took a shot,
"Before I put you down." No one moved. Then the door to the remains of the Hale house swung open.
"Allison, get back," their father warned. Marie pointed her gun towards the door but didn't move yet. She had to wait for the perfect time. Everyone stood up and prepared to fight.
"What is it?" Allison asked.
"It's the Alpha," Scott replied. Marie tensed but knew she had to wait. Even just a few seconds would cause her to lose the element of surprise. Marie aimed her weapon the best she could like everyone else on the ground was doing but it was moving too fast for her to see. One by one they were all taken down until Kate was the last one standing. This was it Peter was finally playing his part in the plan and going after Kate. Soon she would have a clear shot at the alpha.
Peter grabbed Kate's wrist and the shots that were fired from her gun went astray. This was it. While Peter was focused on Kate, Marie took aim and fired, watching as her wolfsbane bullet hit its target but it only hit Peter's shoulder. It didn't matter, the wolfsbane would be enough to weaken him.
Peter looked around in shock that he had actually been shot when he thought he had taken care of all of the others and when he didn't see anyone he grabbed Kate and retreated to the Hale House. Allison jumped up to follow and that was when Marie dropped from her perch in the tree, ignoring the shocked looks from her dad and Scott, and tried to stop her sister. It was too late Allison had already charged after Peter and Kate and had disappeared into the house.
Marie, instead of following her sister, went around to the back entrance of the house and quietly made her way inside, creeping down the hallway silently until she was upon the room where Peter and Kate-and now Allison-were.
Marie waited and watched silently as Peter held her aunt by the throat and made her apologize for the fire to save Allison. Marie refused to look away, barely keeping herself from making a sound as Peter clawed Kate's throat out, splattering blood everywhere. When Allison ran forwards that's when Marie emerged from her hiding spot.
"Allison get back!" Marie pushed her sister aside, placing herself in front of the alpha who had just killed her aunt and threatened her sister.
"And who are you?" Peter asked. Marie pushed Allison towards the door without taking her eyes off him.
"Kate's other niece. The one who actually takes after her. If you want to try to kill one of then it's going to be me." Peter tilted his head as he studied her.
"I know you. You're the one whos been spending time with my nephew, I thought I recognized your scent, Derek reeked of it." He looked her in the eye and Marie held his gaze, refusing to look away.
"You're the one who shot me full of wolfsbane the night I bit Scott," he growled. Marie reached for her batons, she didn't like Peter getting angry when Allison was in the same room.
"Yep," she said coolly, trying to keep Peter's attention on her and not her sister, "and I almost did it again when you trapped us in the high school." Marie struck out toward him with her batons before he got the chance to make a move towards him and managed to get a blow to his head which he recovered from annoyingly quickly.
"That wasn't very nice." Marie moved quickly when he reached out to claw her and ducked underneath his arm, swinging her batons at his back making him stumble forwards. Once again he recovered quickly but this time he growled and launched himself at her. She knew she couldn't fight him when he was this angry and out of control so she dropped her batons and threw out a handful of black powder she had acquired from Dr. Deaton, making Peter stop just inches from her. He stared at her with his fangs bared like he was ready to rip her throat out right then.
"Mountain ash. Well aren't you quite the little hunter," he sneered, "but you seem to forget that I have a very effective method of hurting you." He looked towards Allison and Marie tensed, immediately raising her gun to point it at him.
"You move towards her and I shoot," Peter stilled, "and I promise you this time I will make sure it kills you." Peter contemplated her words, still feeling the wolfsbane bullet in his shoulder she had already shot at him tonight.
At the moment he was distracted by Scott and Derek entering, Marie grabbed her sister and pulled her out of the house leaving the two werewolves to deal with Peter.
"Go get dad!" Marie urged her sister nudging her to where their dad was still on the ground. Marie turned back to the house listening to the thuds and growls coming from inside. Moments later Scott came crashing through one of the windows followed by the alpha. Marie raised her gun to shoot it but was grabbed by the beast and thrown back into a tree with a hard thud.
Everything around her went blurry and she had to close her eyes. Her head throbbed and all of the noise around her only made it worse. She heard a car and someone call her sisters name. She opened her eyes just in time to see the alpha's arm light up in flames as one of Allison's arrows hit and beaker it was holding.
When the beast stumbled back Marie to the chance from where she was half sitting up against the tree to raise her gun one more time and shoot 3 wolfsbane bullets at the alpha, each of them hitting their target.
Another beaker was then hurled at the creature making its whole body become alight with flames. Marie closed her eyes unable to keep them open with the throbbing she felt in her head. She listened as the giant beast collapsed and could smell the acrid scent of burning flesh in the air. She listened as Scott called out to Derek and then everything went dark for a few seconds. Then, she felt a hand on her shoulder, she opened her eyes to see Derek kneeling in front of her with red eyes.
"Did you finish it?" her voice came out in a raspy whisper but it was all she could manage at the moment. He nodded, without saying a word and then stood up and moved out of the way as her sister and father rushed toward her.
Allison cradled her sister's face in her hand making them meet eyes. After she had decided that her sister's injury was not life-threatening, Marie was pulled into a hug by her twin and held there, Allison refusing to release her.
Once Allison finally let go of her, their dad reached down and scooped up his daughter and carried her away from the Hale House with Allison following close behind.
A few days later Marie woke up in her bedroom in her own bed. She looked around and found Allison reading in a chair in the corner.
"Allison," her sister's head shot up. She quickly put her book down and moved to sit on the bed by her sister where Marie was already sitting up.
"Slow down, you had a concussion." She helped Marie sit up anyways, though, knowing it would be no good trying to keep her on bed rest.
"What happened?" Allison sighed.
"Well Kate was blamed for the Hale fire and the murders, mom and dad are being super secretive, and as far as I've heard Lydia is healing normally." Marie nodded, about to ask more questions when Allison stopped her.
"No, that's enough questions. How are you feeling you've been sleeping for two days," Allison asked her sister with a concerned look.
"I'm fine," Marie attempted to reassure her but she didn't look convinced, "seriously, I'm just glad it's all over."
"Yeah I bet, it must have been exhausting making sure everyone was right where you wanted them." Allison gave her sister a weird look which annoyed Marie.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Allison sighed and shook her head.
"Nothing I just find it a little disturbing the way everything-and I mean everything-turned out exactly how you said it would."
"Well, I did tell you I had a plan."
"And Derek?" Marie hesitated before answering.
"Derekā¦and I were just partners, working together to take down Peter." Allison looked at her sister like she didn't believe a word she was saying.
"I mean it" Marie insisted, "with him being an alpha now I think it would be too complicated to be anything else. Besides I can't imagine that it would go over well with mom and dad."
"Scott-" Marie cut her sister off.
"Scott is one thing. He's innocent, never even knew about any of this until we moved here. Derek is a different story and I know for a fact that it would just end badly. Besides, now that Peter is gone we would have no reason to spend any time together so yeah, we were just partners." Allison looked at her sister with pity, like she knew that her sister was lying to herself but she also knew her sister well enough to know that once she made a decision she stuck with it no matter what. Whether this was the right decision or not if Marie decided not to associate with Derek anymore then she would follow through with it. Even if it felt completely wrong.
