Underground Spirits
Chapter 7: Stupidity Rescue
Papyrus' Point of View:
"Good-bye Angel! Good-bye Frisk! We're off to work!"
"Have a good day, Papy." Angel took the time then to pass myself something wrapped in a thick bag. I could vaguely feel the warmth from through the material. "Hot soup for later, I made a seafood chowder. Make sure you eat it up."
"Oh, thank you!" With a wide grin, the bag I carried in my arms before throwing my work bag over my shoulders. I then cast my gaze to my brother. "Sans! Did you get all your items for work? We need to leave now!"
"Yeah, yeah Bro." My older brother sighed before taking a lunch from Angel's hands as well. He haphazardly held onto it before giving me a thumbs up. "I'm good."
"Good! We're off then!"
A Short While Later:
"What a glorious day it is!" I couldn't help but admire just how lovely the scenery was and just how calm our little world of Snowdin was at the moment. The air was actually a tad warm that day, though always cold in Snowdin. It never got much warmer then... perhaps thirty-five degrees? It allowed just enough warmth from Waterfall and Hotland to provide the ability for the snow to melt and water our trees, but then again, when nightfall came, the temperatures dropped just a smidge to provide the flurries of snow once enough water evaporated to the top of the cavern.
Wind still made it down through the cracks in rock from the ruins only a short distance away where apparently a large entrance to the above world was, though of course the barrier prevented us from escaping, but we had a good life.
I knew that bothered Angel, she wished that we could be above ground. She would tell me stories of its amazingness every night before bed should she have the time. Her paintings of that world are very lovely too!
She's used her small bits of knowledge to help our friend, the great doctor Alphys Chordata, to know more of the above ground species, animals and so forth. I must admit, Angel's knowledge is limited slightly, but with some books that have managed to make it down, we had some knowledge to fill in when we didn't know or what Angel couldn't provide us.
"It is Bro." Sans leaned in the chair of his sentry stand close to the ruins. He chuckled, then set his elbow on the wooden base and sat his skull upon his hand. "Ya gonna run off for patrol?"
"Yes! I must make sure that no other humans are around, and should there be, that I bring them to Angel so that she can help them become one with the town like her! And..." I couldn't help but feel a tad nervous at another dark thought I couldn't keep at bay... "I do not wish to have Undyne chase them... It is hard enough making sure that Frisk and Angel are safe in her presence..."
My brother sighed at that. "Yeah, Pap, I know..."
It was something we were constantly dealing with at home. Angel was perhaps becoming a tad more aggressive in the manner of trying to make Undyne her friend. Angel I knew hated to lie to her, and Undyne was such a respected person who thrived on truth and honor. This... if she was to find out... would not end well...
Neither Sans or myself knew exactly how it would go down should we talk to either woman about it...
Shaking the negative thought from my mind, I took a striding step toward the first path by the cavern edge to look for anyone. "I shall be on my way brother. Try not to be too lazy today! I will only forgive your laziness if it is to make sure Angel does not go to try and talk with Undyne as a human! Am I understood?"
"Course Bro." With a salute, Sans winked at me. "I'll check on 'er 'n take a nap at home. Ya know, I can pretend while keepin' and eye on 'er?"
Of course, this did not make me happy, but my brother was far more tactful when it came to watching others and stopping them with his magic. He was the only one I knew who could stop Angel should she set her mind to something...
I sighed. "Very well, Brother. But don't slack off too much!"
Leaving my brother where he was, I began my journey toward the cavern's edge. Snowdin was such a lovely place, but did have a few areas where it was rather deadly if not properly prepared for. We had some signs out to mark where normal trails were, but sometimes were asked to go off trail to make sure no one had hurt themselves.
That is something that no one, and especially not the Great Papyrus, would wish for!
So upon my walk I went. Traveling up the path until I was only a short distance from the ruin doors where that nice goat lady lived, who I wasn't sure why she lived alone or why we weren't allowed to talk about her outside of Frisk, Angel and Sans, and cut through the woods to head along where I knew sometimes people could get hurt or stuck. It was common for many monsters who knew nothing but the city would often travel out here, enjoy the sights, and travel off trail thinking they knew better than others.
I felt sorry for their shortsightedness... It would get them hurt. So! I often volunteered to check out the spots where people normally got stuck.
Perhaps it was sad that I found at least one a week...
So, I often made sure to come out. There are some sorry souls who did not realize just how terrible it was. Many got stuck for hours at a time when the snow was too deep for them to pull themselves out of. Then the cold takes what energy reserves they had. Having long legs and cold resistance helped in my own efforts, and I had not been stuck myself in the snow for many years with the help of my magic.
But not all magic was helpful for pulling people out of the snow like mine was.
"You idiot!"
My skull rang with a shout the second it pierced the quiet air. The wind was howling, but I could still hear them. My long legs pushed through the snow a tad faster to find the people who had come out this far.
"Nina you're such an idiot! Come back here!"
And just before I could make it to the shouting, a lovely young feline woman appeared. Bundled well in this horrendous weather, she shivered as she walked away from the shouting behind her. Her eyes looked quite sad, but she hardly paused until I stepped up beside her.
"Miss? Is everything alright?"
"Oh?!" She turned in such a rush she nearly collided with myself. Her eyes trailed up my large figure until she saw me smiling down at her, trying to brighten her sad look.
I gave her a light bow to bring myself slightly closer to her height. "Sorry for startling you Miss! I am Papyrus Gaster of the sentry division of the guard, is everything alright? I heard shouting?"
"Oh... I was actually about to look for you or someone else to help actually..." She sighed and pointed in the direction that she came from through the thick trees. "My ex-boyfriend has gotten trapped in the snow. I warned him many times how dangerous it was, but it went in one ear and out the other. I figured that sitting there in the snow would calm him down while I found help."
"Oh! Oh dear... I hope he wasn't hurt..."
"Probably more his pride than anything else." She shook her head. "I've been trying to break up with him for so long... but he wouldn't listen and just kept bothering me. I figured this would be a good time to get out of his life before anything else happened."
"My apologies that you went through that ma'am." With a split second to think, I tried to show her my positivity. "Here! Allow me a moment to call my brother, a fellow sentry, and he can take you home! That should give you time to do as you must why I assist your... ex-boyfriend? My brother can teleport! It shall take no time at all!"
Her eyes actually lit up at the suggestion. Was that something she was really looking forward to? Was her relationship with this gent truly that bad? How terrible...
"If you wouldn't mind... I'd really appreciate it... I don't have many things at his home, so I could get done very quickly with the help of my friends. I can call them while you get you brother. I'd really would love the help."
"Certainly! Call you friends and I shall my brother!"
So the two of us did as such. Sans was of course asleep when I called him, but he did pick up after the sixth ring. I explained the situation to him and Sans came out rather quickly to help the poor woman. In return, she managed to call at least two of her friends and let them know quickly what was going on. They were apparently rushing to get to the apartment to get her things out and move so that she could disappear without a trace.
And then she was gone. Lost to a flash of blue light that was my brother's magic. Back to the Capitol where she lived with him. With them being so far from home, it would give her time to take care of everything while I helped her... previous partner.
Out of the woods I walked once I was alone. There was a large patch of smooth snow where I could see the footsteps of both the male and female I'd just helped before seeing the male about waist deep into the snow. I could see he was a canine species with a thin coat of fur from the way his fur looked. He hardly was dressed properly for the weather of Snowdin at all.
He would freeze fast if he didn't get help soon...
"Sir!" I called out to the male while he was screaming still in the hole he'd managed to get himself stuck in.
Another reason why we didn't care for people to go up on those abandoned areas was because Undyne would do training of the guardsmen out there and we would do a lot of damage, lots of craters that would be hidden by the snow. He was honestly in one that Vinnie had made only a month ago during a large training exercise for a third of the guard...
"Fucking finally!" The male kept digging at the snow to try and free himself, but only was able to bring more toward himself. it didn't help that it was snowing around himself. "Get me out of here!"
"Of course, sir! The royal guard is at your service!"
With the ease of being so tall as I was, and my legs so long, I was able to move through the snow very easily. It was hardly to my knees when I was five feet from him. I knew that the snow was much deeper should I get much closer. I kept my distance and used my longer arms to reach out and took hold of his appendages.
Though before I could begin to pull, the male yanked on my form. Trying to pull himself out instead of allowing me to help him. I stood my ground. Magic used to help my legs stay up right while he scrambled.
"Sir, I will put you out. Please hold on a moment-"
"Oh shut up! I have to get back at that bitch!"
I blinked my eye lights at him. I could only assume he meant that sweet woman that my brother had already helped.
It probably wouldn't be wise to say anything about her and make the situation worse with only myself in the woods at that time...
"Who?"
"My fucking girlfriend who just dumped me and left me here to fucking FREEZE!"
"You were here with someone else? I shall call in the guard."
He turned to face me with an ugly look. He was not impressed with the words I said to him. "Don't. Let the bitch freeze. She left me to die, I'll do the same to her."
"Sir, I can't actively leave someone out here in the woods. I am going to call in other members to help search for her. She can't be far. Is she a local to this area?"
"Oh shut the fuck up!" The male was finally able to free himself from the hole, though he was covered in the snow. He was shivering intensely as he stood there, but his temper seemed to be enough heat to keep him going as he hurried away. "I'm gonna kill that Nina! How fucking dare she leave me out here to die!"
The reality of it was much different, but I could see that there was no reasoning with that male. With a sigh, my long legs caught up to him quickly enough.
"Let me make sure you get back to town safely so we can get your warmed, sir. You'll catch hypothermia or frostbite if you stay out much longer."
"Oh get off!" The male honestly shoved me away when I tried to steer him toward the town. "I don't need you for fucking anything! Get lost!"
"Sir, I don't think you understand-"
"No, YOU don't understand!"
I was surprised when a wild punch came flying in my direction. I was just barely able to avoid it, not thinking that he would be violent. That must have been another reason that the poor young woman left him.
"I FUCKING DON'T NEED YOUR HELP!"
I could only sigh. Why did the people who came out to the woods always act so... horrible?
I certainly couldn't let him run amuck. With the use of my magic, bones were crafted into a cage around him, trapping him inside while I carried him in the air. He cried out when such a feature happened and attempted to claw at or bite the bones. However, they refused to give.
"WHAT THE HELL?!"
"I'm placing you under medical quarantine." I hated that I had to do so, but he would not listen otherwise. "I will return you to the capitol where others will care for you since you are medically unsound and not listening to a royal guardsman's orders. I am informing you that you will be transported first to the post at Snowdin to evaluate if you are able to travel back to the capitol and if so, I will be taking you all the way back there for a proper medical evaluation at the major hospital. Am I clear?"
"What the FUCK! You stupid skeleton! Put me down!"
"Sir, you are still not listening, there for, I have the authority to restrain you in the name of public safety and the king."
"You've gotta be fucking kidding me!"
"Now please relax while I take you to the outpost. I will inform my fellow guardsmen of the woman who was also in the woods."
Later That Day:
"Bro, ya really make me worried sometimes..."
"Hm?" I blinked as I turned to face my brother. We were on our way home from the Snowdin patrol who were transporting the unruly male. As he was carted away, strapped down to a medical bed so that he couldn't harm the ones treating him while we walked away at the end of our shifts, I faced my brother, walking slower to match pace with him. "How so, Sans?"
"Pap, do ya even realize that yer attractin' all sorts of crazies?"
"I don't know what you're talking about, Brother."
"Ah jeeze..." Sans looked rather worried for once when he looked back at me. "Pap, seriously. Those areas are where all the crazy people are. Don't ya think maybe ya should let some other sorry soul do that route for once? I'm worried 'bout ya seriously getting' clobbered by one of these dudes."
I raised my non-existent eyebrows. "Sans, after all the training you gave me when I was young and what Undyne and Angel do now for me, do you honestly think I won't be alright?"
"Sorry Bro... too nice for yer own good at times..."
"Brother, some kind people are out on that path too. Look at that poor woman we helped escape from him." I tried to show my brother the bright side in it all. "I want to do that run, to make sure that people like her aren't left behind. I couldn't even fathom stumbling upon that spot too late..."
"Pap..."
Sans could only sigh when he realized just how much that patrol mattered to me. It was my route for that very reason. Perhaps I didn't mention it often, and not often happened on that path, but I couldn't just let it slide. I wanted to be there, to make sure that those who were hurting didn't let themselves die. I didn't want some unfortunate soul to stumble into it with no way out. And perhaps even the cruel ones I couldn't leave there too.
After all, they needed medical treatment...
I couldn't help but giggle at that.
"Pap?"
"Oh!" I half forgot for a second I was still walking with my brother. "Sorry Sans. I was just thinking of that male. But now! We must head home! Angel is waiting for us with PASTA!"
Sans could only laugh at that comment. "Ya wanna take a shortcut?"
I couldn't help but swing at him, missing of course sadly. "You lazybones!"
Granted, I did allow that one rare time for him to do so.
Witch's Note:
Yahoo! Another chapter has been completed here! Some of you wanted some focus on the life of Papyrus and what he does as a sentry, and this perhaps is one of the very reasons why he's out on patrol all the time to help people who are in poor situations like Nina. I hope you all enjoyed the idea!
This one came from Aqwillabee! And if I remember correctly… I have one more idea for her before I've finished her category. And after checking my records, Shady Guy and Mystic Boy's ideas have been completed due to them only giving one. Which is totally okay! No issue with that at all guys. Just giving you an update.
As for what's still to be posted, Aqwillabee has one more idea, I still have yet to do Chaos' single idea, three for Dasansi, three for Raspberry, and four for River.
I think we still got some work to post! Plus we still have book two folks!
Now, how about some reviews!?:
Shadow8Phantom: As sad as it may sound, you were truly right about that last chapter Shadow. Maria truly hid her pain well when we read about her in the main book, but this is truly how she felt under it all. We saw some of the pain, but not all of it. To see her truly breaking down and the suffering that she was under when she lost her family members, almost loosing three instead of two. Then dealing with the 'what ifs' as many do.
Would she have been able to make a difference? We don't know. As you said, "drugs and the greed of their dealers are quite the blight."
Maybe it would have been her death instead…
Mystic Girl: Don't you dare start on that! (My best friend screeches at me as I pondered the thoughts if Maria had been given a chance to change how the world was.) If you want to bring back Millie, go for it! But Robert stays dead and don't you DARE fucking kill Maria!
Me: None of those deaths are changing. Breath Mystic. I'm not gonna rewrite the story. That's too time consuming and dumb.
Mystic Girl: Why not?! We can kill all the bad characters who made a mess of Angel and everyone else!
Me: Yeah, but then what do they grow from. Besides, you just want to take a crack at Robert again. And a few others I won't mention at this moment as per story two's plot.
Mystic Girl: (My best friend screeches as she slams the door. I could hear her rummaging about outside in the hallway and I knew I wouldn't like what I was in store for…)
Thechaosmaster: Jeeze, did I overwhelm you there, Chaos? To see you speechless is a rare thing. I hope I didn't go too far with this. Yikes… maybe I need to change the name of the story to Underground Horror Stories…
Mystic Girl: No way in hell you are! Not all the stories are bad! Look at this one with Papyrus saving this girl and knocking that idiot into place!
Me: (I looked around the room to see her standing in the doorway with a scowl.) Sorry, it was just more of an afterthought rather then not. I'm not changing the name. I like it just fine.
Mystic Girl: Good. Oh, and Chaos! Thanks! We'll get a meeting going soon! Trust me, we have a hell of a lot of emeries in the next book! I need everything we've got!
(She again pulls away from the entrance to my room and I can hear some God-awful noises behind the walls separating us. I could only sigh as we would begin our shenanigans again… At least I had until next book…)
MysticBoywastaken: Uh oh… did I overwhelm you too Mystic Boy! Jesus! I gotta cut back on the dark writing over here… but I can't help it…
Mystic Girl: Halloween! (She shouted at me through the crack in the door, not even bothering to enter that time from how engrossed she was with her project.) You better not be hurting our readers!
Me: I am not! At least not intentionally! Go back to your killing machines and bother me later!
(Ignoring my best friend and she huffed and slammed something big and loud, I returned to my work.) Anyway, I hope this didn't bother you much Mystic Boy, I just really wanted to do the best work to go with your story idea. And its great that you saw the words of the others. You'll be okay, we're all here for you.
Mystic Girl: (She pops her head back into my room.) Of course, we are! Duh! I need your help along with Chaos to take down all the baddies Halloween makes for us!
Not A Shady Guy: Damn! You came in at the last minute! I was just about to upload my work before going to bed when I saw your review Shady! Posting schedule? You mean I haven't posted that enough? I always post on Saturday morning. Eastern Time Zone, roughly between 6AM and 8AM. Its rare that I'm outside that bracket. I promise you, that's always when I've done it on my side. And it should only take half an hour to an hour for fanfiction to upload it.
I've also noticed you've been reviewing on the Friday before I post the next chapter. if you do that… then you'll get another chapter in the next twelve to twenty-four hours! If that's when you see this anyway.
But I'm glad we got to hear from you your thoughts on Maria and Wilbur. Their strengths, weaknesses, all laid out before us to get to witness! I've been doing some darker chapters over here where we see the deep and ugly that we haven't seen as much of with the current story! Or at least not with our side characters. More the main ones.
Okay, I better stop before things get out of control over here. With another chapter done, we are almost half way through our special side story! We have roughly another eleven chapters left unless other ideas are thrown in! Otherwise, once we finished this, we'll begin story two that has been worked on while posting book one!
And trust me, we can't wait for you all to see everything else!
Love you all and see you next week!
Halloween Witch and Mystic Girl
