Seeing Clearly – Haldir

I see the bodies of my brothers

I feel the blood on my hands

I see pain and death all around me

I feel death coming to claim me

Such a strange thing death is

So definite, so unchanging, so cold

After such a long life

Death is not what I looked forward to

My kin lie with the tortured

The Followers lie with the damned

The cries of the living echo in my ears

The cries I soon no longer will hear

I have failed in my task

I have failed my Lord and Lady

I have failed the ones I was sent to protect

Worst of all, I have failed myself

Elbereth give me strength

For my time has not yet come

I have so much to give

Yet no strength to see it done

I see Elessar's tears

Though my life is leaving me

The need to respond is great

But the call from Mandos is greater still
