Riley and Hermione were the best of friends. They didn't keep any secrets from each other. For example, they both knew who each other liked. Hermione had the hots for Draco Malfoy and Riley was obsessed with Harry Potter (who happened to be one of Hermione's best friends. These were things that nobody else knew about.
Riley was one of the top students in her year. She started school the year after Hermione but was put up a grade because of her excellent exam marks. Hermione found something in common with her and because she was tired of being the third wheel of Harry and Ron's friendship, she befriended Riley and they started confiding in each other regularly. She relied on Riley a lot more during the Triwizard Tournament in her fourth year. Harry and Ron were not speaking to each other, and Hermione didn't want to be stuck in the middle, so she started hanging out with Riley a bit more.
It was around that time that she started to notice Draco. She noticed that he acted differently when around girls like Pansy, he had a bad-boy attitude and that was what she loved about him. His white-blonde hair was not greased to the side anymore, it was shorter and he used a spell to permanently spike his hair. He wore black sunglasses all the time and wore the smirk everyday. Hermione knew that he was hot! An added bonus was that he was equal first in the whole year with Hermione. He had the looks, the brains, and of course, the attitude.
Riley was in love with none other than Harry Potter. She was ecstatic when she found out that Hermione was one of his closest friends. She knew that he was nice and caring, and was a softy with animals, and she fell in love with him. She was a firm believer that he wasn't the heir of Slytherin in her second year.
Riley liked to confide in an older person, especially someone who doesn't laugh when you done something stupid, but laughs when you tell a joke. She felt secure when she talked to and confided in Hermione.
Riley was even more surprised than Ron when she told her that she was going out with Viktor Krum. Riley believed that she only did this to prove that she could go out with someone believed to be on the Dark Side.

During the summer before their sixth year at Hogwarts, Hermione, Harry, Ron and Riley were seeing many people. Ron had even more girlfriends than words in one of Hermione's essays (a lot.) Harry was dating Katie Bell, a Gryffindor chaser, for the most part of the holidays, but broke up with her when she cheated on him with Ron. Hermione had to walk in between him and Ron so no-one would get injured. After that Harry started to date a blonde from Hufflepuff named Jane Nazrat.
Hermione was (and still is) dating a good looking guy from Ravenclaw named Josh Dragon. Riley was going out with Justin Finch-Fletchy in Hufflepuff.
Even though Riley and 'Mione were best friends, they constantly used the information they had against each other. This blackmail made Harry and Ron very suspicious. Especially when Riley said to 'Mione, "Do you want me to tell them about your liking for dragons?" and 'Mione's face literally went white. Harry and Ron would constantly ask questions but the only answer they got was 'just a joke' and that information didn't help at all.
