From her perch on the windowsill, a bright green bird gazed lovingly at her master's sleeping form. He looked so innocent, sprawled across his simple bed. What irony, that such evil being could be so peaceful. Yet that was why she loved him. His hatred for the rest of the world seemed but an illusion when he spoke to her, his only friend. She sighed. Friend. that was all she was to him, all she would ever be. He could never see her as she saw him, never accept her as his lover nor take her as his wife. No more did she crave everlasting life; no longer could she understand what drove her to this curse. If only she had chosen to remain mortal, accepted that her life had reached its end. But yet, in taking her only chance at life and accepting the form of the immortal phoenix, she had erected a wall between herself and the rest of demonkind - the barrier of species. It was unwritten law among all creatures, from the mightiest lion to the smallest worm. And yet she defied it, finding love outside her kind and pursuing it with a will. Perhaps one day, far into the shrouding mists of time, her love for this demon could be accepted. But would he return it? Would he even be alive to? The answers to these questions she knew not.
With teardrops rolling down her glossy feathers, she glided silently across the room, alighting beside her beloved master's head. And even as she pressed her beak against his lips in a gentle kiss, her silent pleas for death found their way into reality.
