Remus Lupin contemplates the loss of his friend. Short and sweet.
---
Remus Lupin sits quietly in his sitting room in a dusty, worn chair. In his hands, he holds a photograph. The photograph shows three young boys around the age of 15 or 16 under a tree, smiling and waving in youthful happiness. One of the boys has unruly black hair which he ruffles, giving it a windblown look, and glasses over hazel eyes. Another leans lazily against the tree's trunk and brushes his long, black hair out of his face. And the third boy with light brown hair and brown eyes just stands and waves.
But Lupin isn't really looking at the picture. In his mind, he is back at the Death Room in Sirius' final moments...
"Come on, you can do better than that!" Sirius says and laughs. But then his barklike laugh is suddenly silenced when a red beam of light from Bellatrix's wand pierces his heart and he plunges through the veiled doorway.
You were always too cocky for your own good... Remus thinks sadly to himself.
Lupin grabs Harry to keep him from following Sirius through the doorway. Fighting his own desire to follow Sirius through the veil to rescue his friend from the clutches of Death.
But I knew that was impossible. I know what lies beyond the veil, and I know that it's beyond my power to save you from it, Padfoot... I had to keep Harry from doing the same thing I wanted to do myself... I knew you wouldn't want him to follow...
I would have followed you, my friend...
Lupin stands up from his chair and places the photograph on a table alongside, the three figures smiling and oblivious to the war they will face and fight in. A war that will claim the lives of two of their number.
Leaving only one.
The last Marauder walks to the doorway and stops to take one more glance at the picture on the table.
Goodbye, Padfoot...
Moony turns and walks slowly away.
