Disclaimer: Kanashimi: Don't make me laugh. Korin owns nothing. She's penniless!! She's -- *he is struck by a lightening bolt* a great person, I'm sure. Itai...

"There, girl, don't be afraid. We don't want to hurt you," he assured her, moving toward her slightly.
"Like hell you don't!" she sneered at him, jumping backwards lightly.
"Here, missy, keep a civil tongue in your head when you talk to me, or you won't have one. Now, just give me your earrings and you can go. You don't need 'em anyway - you're a street kid, ain't cha? What d'you need gold hoops for?"
She sent him a chilling look, and drew herself up. Her hand unnoticed went to the knife in her sash. "I wear 'em because I want them, and if you think you'll get 'em you're dead wrong!"
At that he snarled and darted forward. As quickly and smoothly as a snake striking she stabbed him, the blade sliding into his back easily as he fell past her - she had moved to the side. She laughed under her breath as the blood bubbled out of his mouth.
"Told you they was mine. I keep what's mine."
The other thieves set upon him, grinning slightly, and taking his possessions. Only one boy, younger than the rest, stood staring at her, his hair in disarray. He looked stunned.
"You killed him. You killed our Thief-Lord."
"I do that, koneko. He attacks me, and I kill him back. It's easy, and it's stops 'em."
His face contorted into anguish mixed with fear and rage. "That's not supposed to be so! We steal, but never go so far as killing! You aren't right!"
She snorted. "Look at your loyal gang. They're robbing his corpse right now. Doesn't that tell you anything?"
The power of the disillusionment struck him then. He let out a half-wail, half-scream of hate and lunged at her. His fingers hooked in the loop of her earring and pulled. She felt a searing pain and then wet blood running down her face in thick streams.
"Damn you, koneko!"
She threw her dagger.
He stood in shock for a moment, looking at the bloody ring in his hand and then the knife in his chest. His eyes flew to hers, and held them for a moment before his breath caught in his throat and he choked and fell.
The other thieves froze and watched silently as she walked over to him, yanked her earring out of his dead hands, pulled her dagger from his body. She wiped it on his tunic, and stuck it back in her sash.
"I told you to leave me alone. Now you know." She looked up at them. "You see? Remind the rest of the thieves around here. I don't figure they wanna die, and it is very easy." The words 'very easy' were interrupted by a small trace of a laugh accompanied by the slight rise of her eyebrows.
Then she walked away. She left not a trace of regret.
