EVERYTHING'S RELEVANT
PART II
Summary: Time is an extremely complicated thing. One little change could cause unforeseen events. Watch what happens when Maryanne Lupin's quill explodes right before she's about to hand in an office report…
Disclaimer: Don't own it. Any of it. Unfortunately. If I did, do you think Sirius would be dead! As if! It would have been Fudge.
What happened…
Gerald Hurly checked the supplies list. His office was running out of Halthis, a magical herb that could only be collected by light of the full moon. With a chuckle, he decided that the next unlucky person he saw would get the task of renewing the supply.
Maryanne Lupin finished her report for the Department of Magical Herbs quickly and went her boss' office to deliver it to him in person. "Ah, Maryanne," he smiled when he was her. He skimmed through her report quickly. "Good, excellent," he murmured. Maryanne smiled proudly. She was good and her job and loved it. "Now, Maryanne," Gerald Hurly said, setting the papers aside, "would you mind collecting a few bushels of Halthis for the office? There's good pay in it, of course."
"Of course," Maryanne agreed. She didn't mind collecting the herb, of course, but the money was a definite bonus. She and her husband were very poor, and often wondered about their young son's future.
On her way out of the office, Maryanne passed Laurel Reywood, waiting to talk to Hurly. Maryanne smiled at her and went back to her desk.
But what if…
Gerald Hurly checked the supplies list. His office was running out of Halthis, a magical herb that could only be collected by light of the full moon. With a chuckle, he decided that the next unlucky person he saw would get the task of renewing the supply.
Maryanne Lupin had almost finished her report for the Department of Magical Herbs when her quill exploded. "Oh, bloody hell…" she murmured, then reached into her robes for her wand. After she cleaned the spilled ink off the parchment, she went to her boss' office to deliver the report to him in person. However, she saw Laurel Reywood walk in ahead of her, so she waited patiently outside for a few minutes.
Soon, Laurel walked out and gave her a smile. "I'm the lucky person assigned the task of collecting some more Halthis," she said with a laugh. Maryanne laughed back and wished her luck. She handed the report to Gerald Hurly and went back to her desk.
What happened…
"Come on, Remus," Maryanne cooed to her three-year-old son. "Want to come for a walk with Mommy?"
Her husband looked up from reading the Daily Prophet. "You're taking the baby to go search for Halthis?" he asked, amused.
Maryanne laughed. "He'll enjoy it, won't you Remus?" she asked. Her son looked up at her, then nodded solemnly.
Her husband smiled at them. "You sure you don't need my help?" he asked.
"We'll be fine," Maryanne reassured him. "Halthis grows right in the forest behind the house, so we should be back pretty quickly. And the full moon is very bright, so we won't get lost. Are you ready, Remus?" she asked her son, who had just toddled in the kitchen holding his boots. "Oh, what a smart little boy!" she said as she put them on his feet.
"Ready?"
And they walked into the forest.
*~*~*
"Remus, stay right here," Maryanne told her son. She bent down and began to cut the Halthis, which was shimmering brightly in the moonlight. As she worked, Remus walked over to a bush and stared intently at it. He thought he heard heavy breathing coming from in the bush.
"Mommy?" Remus asked tentatively. "Mommy, the bush is breathing."
"What is it, Remus?" Maryanne asked distractedly.
"Mommy," he began again, but a huge, snarling monster jumped out at him. "MOMMY!" he wailed. Maryanne jumped up and screamed, running at her son. "MOMMY! AAAAAAAH!" he screamed as the monster latched onto his arm and shook it furiously.
As Remus screamed in pain, Maryanne fumbled for her wand. "STUPEFY!" she yelled. The spell hit the beast, which yelped in pain and ran away. Remus lay sobbing on the ground and Maryanne ran to him, picking him up and cradling his bloody arm.
*~*~*
"A werewolf bite," the doctor at St. Mungo's testified.
But what if…
Maryanne walked downstairs, into the kitchen. She kissed her husband on the cheek. "I just put Remus to bed," she told him.
He nodded. "He seemed tired."
They both jumped at the same time as a long, loud howl came from outside. Maryanne shuddered. "What was that?"
Her husband listened with a worried look on his face. "Sounds like a werewolf," he said seriously. "We'll have to report this to the Ministry. It's not safe for werewolves to be running about the forest."
Maryanne shuddered again at the thought of her darling son being bitten by a werewolf. "I'm glad Remus is inside and safe," she said. Her husband nodded in agreement.
*See what one little thing can do?
A/N Another part! I'm thinking of doing a third part, where Harry is delayed in the robes shop in the first book just long enough for Malfoy to find out his surname. If anyone else has any bright ideas, tell me! I'm very short on bright ideas. :-P Anyway, review!
