Disclaimer: No characters associated with Harry Potter are mine
.unfortunately. For if they were, I'd be happily writing the sixth book by
now.
Author's Notes: AD/MM is my favorite Harry Potter shipping and I had to put some of my small cookies of them up onto ff.net. This takes place after the scene in Hagrid's hut, Dumbledore had to return to his office to get some things.
~ The gasp of shocking disbelief seemed to echo through the circular office. Minerva McGonagall braced herself, moving backwards to sit in the plush armchair and stared, bewildered at the older man standing by the fire. "Albus? Surely they can't remove you...you're the only defense Hogwarts has!"
Dumbledore bent his head in modest acknowlegment of the complement and turned to hand her the letter. "It's by Lucius Malfoy--"
"The little rat probably threatened to curse the governors if they didn't agree to sacking you." McGonagall spat bitterly, giving the letter a cursory glance. "I wouldn't put it beyond him."
"I agree Minerva but the school is in capable hands if you're allowed to stay on." He went over to stand at the chair's side, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. Shaking slightly, she lifted a delicate hand to cover his and squeezed tightly.
"I can't run this school without you. As soon as you leave, the killings will start. I heard the rumors about last time. I saw Myrtle's lifeless body...I don't want that to happen again!"
He moved from the side to kneel before her in the chair and gripped both of her hands, bringing them up to his lips one at a time. "And it won't. I promise Minerva. I'll only be a owl flight away."
"I don't want you to go..." she protested weakly, bowing her head, a loose tendril of ebony hair falling forward into her face before Dumbledore smoothed it behind her ear.
He smiled softly and leaned forward to brush a kiss against her cheek. "I won't be gone, not as long as there are those here who stay loyal to me."
McGonagall lifted her head and opened her mouth to speak but a sharp rapping on the door signaled Fudge's presence. She glared at the offending noise and then rose with Albus's hands still entwined with her own. "Where will you be?"
"In Hogsmede, Zonko has an empty room above his shop, I'll think of it as a quiet vacation."
Despite the seriousness of the situation McGonagall couldn't contain the quick smile that flittered on her lips. "Quiet isn't a word I'd use for Zonko..."
"Too true my dear professor, too true." he chuckled and went to the door, "If I'm needed, send Fawkes," he paused for only a moment before opening the door and nodding to Fudge.
McGonagall stared wordlessly at the closing door before slumping back into the chair, her head falling into her hands. "You're always needed, Albus."
