"I see them," she said, pointing to the black-winged creatures that were pulling the carriages. The other students were mulling about, waiting for the other carriages to arrive.
"I do too," he said, stroking the animal.
The animal looked timid and pulled back slightly. The man who drove the carriage said loudly, "what are you petting?"
Draco withdrew his hand, "nothing."
The man obviously had never seen anyone die before.
Pansy shivered, "it's scary."
"They're sort of pretty, if you look at them in a certain way."
"Ugly is more like it," she added.
"Your Father," he muttered dully. "Right?"
"Yeah," she said, "two summer's ago."
"You saw them before?"
"Of course I did."
"And you didn't say anything?"
"No. It was none of your bloody business."
He glared at her and took a large bite of peppermint toad. Still examining the thestrals. "Want one?"
"Sure." She peeled the wrapper off and eagerly ate the striped toad. "I'm sorry about your Father."
"August ninth," he said dryly, "best day of my bloody life. I traded in my Father for watching thestrals, good trade, don't you think?"
She feigned a chuckle. "Both our Father's."
He smiled grimly.
"Who will walk me down the aisle?"
"What?"
"The aisle, Father's always walk their daughter's down the aisle-"
"Oh. Look at the thestrals, they're ready to trot!"
She looked.
They were scuffing their hooves on the dirt road.
"You two," the young man said and pointed to two seats. Draco helped her up onto the carriage and they sat opposite each other.
She was thinking about her wedding, he was thinking about the thestrals.
But they were both thinking about their Fathers.
