How Elvis Costello Was First Heard At Hogwarts

by cynical

(written while drivin' down the road to LA, red shoes on my feet and Harry Potter on my mind. set in the Maurauder's seventh year, which places us in 1977) oh, and I don't know Molly Weasley's maiden name, so I just made one up. ;)

There was a noise coming from one of the Gryffindor dorm rooms. It sounded...it sounded...a bit like music. People were drifting quickly towards it and, having nothing better to do, Remus went with them.

They all gathered around the open doorway to the room. Inside was a boy--a fifth year Muggle-born called Sam--dressed in Muggle "jeans" (faded), "sneakers" (black and white with a star on each ankle) and a "t-shirt" (bearing the near-inexplicalbe inscription "Jimi Hendrix"). He was listening to loud music--a man singing--from a...a what? "Phonograph" ran in excited whispers around the small crowd. Remus saw redheaded Arthur Weasley staring at the "phonograph" in much the same way that Molly Goleitly looked at Arthur. Finally somebody got up enough nerve to shout "What is that?" over the music.

"It's Elvis Costello!" Sam roared good-naturedly. "My brother sent it by owl to me! It's my birthday!" He considered the crowd for a moment, then added "Why don't y'all come in here?"

And so they did, standing around listening, entranced. "I used to be disgusted, but now I try to be amused. Since their wings have got rusted, the angels wanna wear my red shoes..." the phonograph sang. It was most peculiar and nobody understood it, but they all looked around smiling and tapped their toes. Remus looked down at his shoes, muttered a quick charm, and watched with pleasure as they turned slowly crimson. He cut a private little caper.

"The angels wanna wear my red shoes--red shoes! The angels wanna wear my red shoes."
