Overpowering by Arabella Devine DISCLAIMER: I do not own anything except Audrey. Audrey sat at her father's breakfast table, daintily chewing tiny bites, and watching her father read the news from the fort. Audrey was the daughter of Lieutenant John Morgan, a well established commander of her majesties Royal Navy at the Fort Mason. And she hated it. She had lived on the sweaty hot Caribbean island for 6 months and she found it altogether disagreeable. She hated the heat of the day, the sounds of the ocean outside her window at night, the bugs and the bites she received from them even with her mosquito net around her bed. The servants were far too lax and insolent, forgetting their place in society so frequently she often had to remind them. In short, Audrey missed England. She missed the enormous manor and the moors she played on as a child. The cool balmy weather and the lushness of the land. She missed her home. But she was far too proper a lady to tell anyone this. She could not tell her father and disappoint him. She had no friends on the island. And that is why, day after day, after her father left to tend to his charges at the forts, she went to the beach. She would take off the heavy silk dresses and put a heavy cloak on over her under shift. She would take a long walk up to her favorite bluff she had discovered two days after she arrived at this godforsaken hellhole. She would sit on the bluff, eat her lunch the cook would pack her, and after thinking for a good long while about the things she hated about this place, she would go and swim in the ocean. Even while she complained about the sound of it below her window at night, she did love the way it overpowered her senses. The sound of it as she passed under a wave, the taste of saltwater upon her lips, the admiration she had for Mother Nature. Today was like all of the other 178 days she had spent here. Except for one thing. Someone had taken over her bluff. And she would not stand for it. She marched up to the badly dressed man and said loudly, "Excuse me!" at the prone man with a three cornered hat that had seen much better days long ago over his head. He groaned, sat up slowly, and took a good long look at her. "What, love, would be the problem?" "As a lady of higher station, I am asking you politely to vacate this area and maybe find somewhere more appropriate to sleep, namely somewhere that may have a bed." Audrey was mad, and her voice certainly showed it. "Well, then, love, I believe you're askin' the wrong person to respect a.what was it. 'a lady of higher station's wishes. Good day" He slipped the tired old hat back over his head and went back to sleep. Audrey stood wide-eyed and open-mouthed during his entire answer, and now found the amount of anger at being dismissed so casually by someone so much lower than herself astounding. She had already lifted her booted foot to kick him hard in the ribs before remembering that she was the Lieutenant's daughter. She, of all people, would never do such a thing. So instead of kicking him she merely stomped back to her wretched house to pout and go back tomorrow.
