Rose Petal Memories

Polgara sighed sadly and looked over the snow covered Vale. The birds of the summer were gone and all that was left were the deer that stayed because fo the twins. She had been looking at the Vale a lot lately and she didn't know the reason why. There was only her, Durnik, the kids and the twins in the Vale right now, everyone else off to see the world, keeping the fires down to minimal.

She turned to her children and smiled slowly. Her children and her husband were her life now but sometimes she wished for adventure. She reached for the blue leather bound book, her book, and flipped through the pages, remembering each place, each name, each thing she had to do.

Memories fell over her like dew across a blushing rose. Asransa, Mandorallen, Killane, Ontrose, Korodullan and Mayaserena. All the people she had met, loved, and lost. All her champions and her estates in Erat. But all that was in the past now and she could never get back to those happy times. All that time spent trying to keep Garion's family alive, her family alive and for what? She had nothing but dusty memories the pain a person can never forget.

Then memories of Beldaran, the most beautiful woman in the world, and Riva Iron-Grip, keeper of the Orb, flickered like so much light across the shadows of her mind. Tears trailed down her eternal cheeks. She wanted to see Beldaran so badly. The tears flowed faster. If she thought she would ever have to give up this much, would she have taken the task handed to her so long ago by Ul?

Then a smile traced her lips.

Yes, she probably would.

She would take all that pain, all that loss and all that grief for the simple pleasure of knowing that she saved the world. That because of her, the Tolnedrans, the Alorns, the Algarians, everyone, even the Malloreans, lived to see another day. She wiped the tears from her eyes and called her children to her, hugging them close.

Never again would she question why she had given up so much. She would always know that it was for the reason of this world living on that she had done it.
