Luck's Daughter:
Prologue-
It wasn't to be said that the young God of Luck was foolish- for he was not, but simply a bit absentminded. He was one of the more powerful of the minor gods, worshipped especially in the lands east of Tortall- Tyra, Tusaine, Galla, Maren- sometimes as one of the Great Gods, or sometimes simply as a patron of- well, he was never really a patron of anybody in particular. Often he favored some mortals above others, but the favor never lasted lifetimes, and sometimes lasted less even then a single day. He didn't have a name, exactly- the Luck God, the people would call him, or if they weren't in the mood to talk, simply Luck. He walked in the Mortal Realms often, disguised as one thing or another, and not always human. Most often he was a fox, and in Tyra especially the fox was considered a sign of good luck. It was one of these times- disguised not as a fox, but as a human- in the Mortal Realms, that it happened. Always the other gods had given him free reign to go between the Realms, and he walked where he liked and did what he liked, and on this day he chanced to meet a mortal woman.
He had not visited, as he usually did, one of the lands farther east, but Tortall, most western of the Eastern Lands. The woman, who was really more of a girl at nineteen years of age, was Tortallan and as beautiful, they said, as the Queen Thayet herself. She had long hair that tumbled down her back in a mass of red-gold curls, and eyes blue as the very sky. The Luck God, on this day, had the misfortune of falling in love with her, and as he had made himself into a mortal man who was perhaps handsome enough to match her beauty, she fell in love with him. Rare indeed are the children of a god and a mortal, and powerful also, should they choose to stay in the realm of their lesser parent. The daughter of Luck and of a mortal woman was one such child, and she was called, among the gods at least, Luck's Misfortune. For misfortune she was enough to her father, in the years that were to come, and not only to him but also to most all who dwelt in the Realms of the Gods.
It was the Luck God's mistake that such should be her fate, his fault altogether and no one else to take the blame. Powerful are the gifts of the children of the gods, and anything powerful can be vastly dangerous. Luck never stayed in the Mortal Realms under that particular guise long enough to tell his daughter who she was- indeed, he left the mother of his daughter before she even knew herself to be with child. It cannot be said that he left the two of them altogether, for he watched over them in many different likenesses and they never knew him to be who he was. But abandoned, a god's child can do great damage indeed. Greater still if she has no training, no knowledge at all of her power. And so it was with Luck's daughter. Before you lies her taleā¦
