Sunset
by Jess Angel

It had been this way for the past week. Stolen glances, accidental brushes of hands, blushes on her part and floor staring on his. It was almost as awkward as junior high.

After the defeat of the Dark Gundam and achieving victory in the Gundam Fight, the Neo Japan duo's budding relationship was developing at a somewhat snail-like pace. But neither party was bothered by the fact, much to the dismay of their friends.

They were content with the lingering, the watching, and the waiting.

It was their dance.

It was a waltz without music but no less beautiful. The moves were subtle and obvious, grand and simple, hidden and apparent.

The dance always ended the same. It was away from peering eyes and curious stares. It ended in the comfort of being alone together.

-Rain POV-

It's been getting colder the past few nights. I clutch the crimson cape closer to my body. It still smells of him, cinnamon and roses. I never thought Domon would smell so sweet. Yet, it wasn't feminine. It was male and strong. It was intoxicating - just like him.

It was almost time. I feel my legs striding faster towards the cherry blossom tree that's yards away. He was never late and neither was I. Being on time had become almost a trust issue. It was our symbol of commitment. We expected each other to be there.

We never talked about our meetings away from our special place. He never mentioned it. I never brought it up. Maybe because we knew it was meant for another time… the future, perhaps. Not that I was talking about marriage. I knew Domon too well. This was all new to him. Strangely, it was new to me as well. And even though we had been childhood friends and worked together for some time, I felt like I needed to learn everything about him all over again, piece by piece.

I slow as I approach the pink tree. He's already there. Leisurely, I approach his leaning form. When I reach his side he straightens to his full height. His eyes run over the cape that's covering me. He fingers a fold of the fabric before gently pulling me up the hill.

We rarely speak when we head towards that green hill. This is one of those times.

"You could've tripped."

My mouth opens - then closes abruptly.

But I can't keep quiet. "Well, thank you for pointing out a possible 'Rain clumsy scenario' that might've endangered my pride," my voice drips with sarcasm.

He keeps walking and pulling. "Then I'll remember to tell you more often," he has the nerve to answer.

Before I can elbow him, we stop. We've reached the top.

He sits down, legs stretched out before him. I take my place at his left, my knees drawn to my chest.

We watch in silence as the sun begins its descent. Its golden orange light seems to die away as it falls longingly into the black sea. They touch and worlds collide. The light is its brightest. Blinding.

Then I realize I'm being kissed.

When it ends my eyes flicker open. His eyes meet mine.

Worlds collide.

Day and night touch.

…It was sunset.
