I skipped through the halls at school watching my feet. I wore maroon
leggings with holes in the knee part, denim blue Keds sneakers and a
Pocahontas backpack. I am basically the average 2nd grader. I jumped a
little every time I took another step, singing a little chant while doing
it:
I'm walking through the halls,
I'm walking through the halls,
I take my foot and stomp it down,
I'm walking through the halls.
I jumped outside to the desert air, scanning for my friend. Alas, Jessica stood across the pavement, her ghostly white hair blowing in the wind as she screamed to her brother about something.
"Jess'ca!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. Jessie turned with her eyes and looked at me. One was closed and the other was half-open, like it always was.
"Allie!" she shouted. She waved at me to come over to her, and I ran over there.
"Hi," I said. "Do ya wanna come over today? My mom's picking me up so I don't gotta go to Sunrise."
"Yeah, Can I?"
"Ya!"
"But I'm s'posed to go to Brandon's house today. My mom's makin me, but I don't wanna go to his house."
"Uh, I don't want you go to either."
"Well, I'll just go to your house. I want to, I haven't been to your house in a while."
"Okay."
We walked across the street with the crossing guard safely directing traffic and hopped over to my mom's car.
"Mommy?" I asked. "Can Jessica come over?"
"Sure," my mom said.
"Yay!" we chanted. The place my mom had picked us up was at Jessica's neighborhood, so we ended up driving by her house anyway. Jessie and me looked out the window and saw Brandon and his dad standing irritated at her garage.
"Oh no," Jessica slid down the seat. So did I. My mom turned back at us, and stopped the car. Brandon ran over to the car and looked inside.
"Hey Dad! Hey Dad! I found her! She's in here," he told.
"No I'm not," Jessica said.
"Yes you are."
"No she's not," I said.
"Yes she is," Brandon said, "She's right there." His dad came over, glanced at Jessica crouching in the car, and started talking to my mom.
"Now your gonna get it," said Brandon.
"Shut up you dork," said Jessica. I laughed.
"I am not a dork."
"Ya you are," said Jessica, "Brandon is a dork! Brandon is a dork!" I chimed in.
"Brandon is a dork! Brandon is dork!"
"Stop it! You girls are so mean! Jessie your mom said you had to come over to my house today. Remember?"
"So?"
"You hafta come to my house!" He opened the car door and marched back with his arms crossed. He looked at us. We looked back and Jessie unbuckled her seat belt. She put one leg out of the car, and stood up. Then she snatched the door handle and slammed it shut locking the door.
Brandon scowled at us and marched back over yanking on the door handle.
"Brandon!" said his dad, "Stop you're going to break the car." We laughed hysterically, but only for a moment. My mom turned around.
"Jessica, Brandon's dad said that your mom had planned for you to go to his house after school. So, you have to go with them."
"No." I whined.
"Aw, do I have to?" asked Jessica.
"Yes," she said, "Maybe you could come over another time."
"There won't be another time," I said.
"Yes there will," my mom said. I frowned and sat back in my chair tears filling my eyes. Jessica got out of the car, an angry look cast across her face too. It was so unfair.
My mom started up the car and drove on, I held my hand on the window, and Jessie waved goodbye back. We would never see each other again.
