"While You Were Asleep"
The cool night wind blows my shaggy, unkempt hair into my face. I brush it out of my eyes and continue keeping watch. I need no sleep. Unlike you. You need all the rest you can get, for each tomorrow awaits more challenging things than the last for you...and for me as well.
I look down at your body. You're slumbering peacefully, or you at least appear to be. You stir slightly in your sleep, and I wait for your startling blue eyes to open. But they do not, and you merely turn over. I wonder if you've had any nightmares since you've gained this golden burden. I know I have.
The other three are such deep sleepers. But you've always been first to awake. Like the other night at Bree, you were all asleep. But a Nazgûl screamed, and you were first to jolt out of your slumber. I can see why, as the gold ring on its chain gleams even in the moonlight. I pull my eyes from it, lest I be tempted by its power like my ancestors were.
A sigh escapes me as I think of the troubles that await you. I wish with all my being that they are over as soon as they can be, for something tells me that our journey will not end at Rivendell. My sigh becomes heavier as I realize this might drag you all the way to the black land itself. Someone so small should never bear such a cumbersome burden.
My eyes glance to the horizon, and see the sky just starting to glow faintly pink. Another day is coming. As soon as the sun is visible I shall wake you and your comrades. But until then, I will let you sleep. You will need it in the days to come, as I have already said.
"Sleep, young halfling," I murmur softly, so you do not awaken too soon. "Things will be hard. But I swear I will protect you, no matter what. Even if it means my own death, it will be worth it if you are safe." A quarter of an hour later, and you're awake. You blink your eyes, and look at me. A wary trust is in your eyes, but that doesn't bother me.
"Good morning, Strider," you say. "Did you even sleep last night?" I shake my head. "No," I said. "Wake the others and pack up. We need to make good time today." You obey, and I assist in packing up camp. Today we make for the ford of Rivendell, and a heavy weight tugs on my already burdened heart. Today will not go well.
I look over at you. You do not notice me. I do not mind. You will in time, and you will come to trust me, as I have you.
Ta-dah! I love one-shots! So0o0o0o...what didja think??? Let me know!
