Starfleet Headquarters
Three Months Earlier.
Captain Jonas Alexander looked out the window of his quarters in the Starfleet Headquarters complex. The sun was rising over the San Francisco bay. Jonas donned his best uniform making sure that everything was proper and meticulously squared away.
Nervously the newly promoted Captain paced the floor with good reason. Admiral Janeway sent notice that he would be receiving his first command. Jonas was puzzled as to why a research lab scientist would receive command of a starship. Alexander took one final look into his mirror, satisfied with his grooming he dimmed the lights and left his quarters.
Jonas briskly walked the corridors of Starfleet Headquarters as he reached the sky atrium he stopped and took in the breathtaking view of the Golden Gate Bridge restored to its historical 20th century beauty. He sighed and he thought to himself how he never took time to appreciate all the things on earth and soon he would be in command of a starship. Jonas resumed his walk and continued until he reached the Deep Space Exploration department. Taking a deep breath he approached the counter where Admiral Janeway's assistant was sitting.
The young Vulcan Ensign looked up and smiled only as a well trained Vulcan could, "You must be Captain Alexander, you are quite early please have a seat and I will notify the Admiral that you are here." The slender Vulcan female stood up and walked to another room only to promptly reappear with the Admiral.
Janeway smiled, "I like punctuality... but you are one hour and fifteen minutes early."
Captain Alexander sighed and simply offered, "I did not want to be late."
Janeway warmly responded, "I guess not... I knew a young Captain who was very nervous about receiving their first command once. This Captain had to take a newly commissioned ship into a hostile zone... she was quite early to report to her admiral as well." Janeway waived her hand at an open door, "step into my office and I'll brief you on your command."
Captain Alexander followed the aged Admiral to her office and took his seat only after she took hers. "Ma'am, if I may ask one question..."
Janeway interrupted... "Why I chose to give you command of a starship?"
Captain Alexander looked in amazement, "Exactly..."
Janeway continued, "...I'm going to be straight to the point... your scientific background is impressive. I am giving you command of the Dauntless... you may not know it, but a lot of your research in advanced technology has been applied to many of the Dauntless' systems. You will be right at home with the interfaces on the Dauntless... she is a radically new design in starships and I need a Captain who is not afraid of new technology to command her."
Jonas thought for a moment, "The Dauntless Project was a rumor shrouded in secrecy until recently... and we still don't know much about it."
Janeway smiled, "That is why you need to meet with Seven of Nine and Bellanna Paris at the Nellis Starship Research Facility. Right now the Dauntless is deep in an underground hangar. We have already intercepted two attempts to steal technology from the project and we are taking all security precautions. I would suggest that you begin packing your bags because you are being handed the opportunity of a lifetime on a silver platter. I want you to familiarize yourself with the ship and help to shake out any bugs."
Alexander stood up, "I won't let you down, and it seems I have a lot to do.
Janeway stood up and approached the Young Captain, "Jonas, I have watched your career for a long time." and she thought to herself, and you remind me of the young Captain I once was.
