She curls up on her bed in a quivering mass, her body wracked with shuddering sobs as her tears drenched her pillow. From out side her window he watches, pained at the sight of her as she trembles with the force of her sobs. His eyes shine with unshed tears, his fist grips the branch until he is sure that the rough edges of the bark will forever be imprinted in his palm.

As he sits, perched outside her window on a branch of the great oak tree, he fights his own painful tears, and in the silence of the night, marred only by the guttural sob coming from the room to which he was peering, he heard her words, words that came from the crumpled remains of her heart, words that shattered his soul and tore at his hearts strings. The words of a young girl that he felt an unexplainable need to protect, and shelter from the pains and hardships of the world around her, to comfort her and lover her. But it was because of him that she lay curled in that vulnerable little heap in the middle of her bed, sobbing uncontrollably. It was his fault, and he knew it.

Her fists clenched on the bed sheets around her while she sobbed bitterly into her pillow. "Why did you have to say those things..... Why did you have to hurt me like that.... I trusted you, and you threw it back in my face. I thought that you cared for me.... But now.... There's nothing.... Now I'm alone, and he's gone out of my life forever...." Her small fists balled against her face as her sobs became more painful and the reality of what he had done seeped into her soul.

With her muffled words he could hear her heart breaking, could hear it fall to the floor and shatter into a thousand tiny pieces. He could see in his minds eye her soul being ripped to shreds with each passing moment. It was too much for him to take. He silently slipped from the tree to the ground and began his long walk home in the darkness of the moonless night.

She kept running. Faster and faster, sure that she would lose her breath and never be able to catch it again. Her heart beat hard and painfully against her rib cage, and still she ran. Her feet never hesitating in the movements, she reached up and took hold of her key. She viciously ripped it from around her neck, not caring what damage she may inflict on the delicate charm. As she charged forward tears streamed down her cheeks, but she didn't care...
