King Jonathan of Conte stared out the window into the courtyard below. The sound of merriment and festivity reached his ears, and he longed to closed his eyes, but couldn't turn away from the spectacle. For long moments he watched Alanna and George share their first dance as a married couple. He should be down there, dancing with Thayet, pretending to be happy for his Champion, but he couldn't. It hurt too much.
When somebody loved me
Everything was beautiful
Every hour spent together
Lives within my heart
Finally he buried his head in his hands, breathing deeply. He knew he did this to himself. He didn't have to marry Thayet, a woman he didn't love. But he couldn't bear the thought of Alanna moving on, thinking he still loved her. Sadly the King recalled on old memories of his youth, when he and Alanna were best friends, and lovers. When he was happy.
And when she was sad
I was there to dry her tears

With a small, bitter smile he remembered their trials and tribulations. Their first kiss at the River Drell. The Black City. When she got her shield, and left him for almost a year. Their fights. Their apologies…they had been through it all.
Through the summer and the fall
We had each other that was all
Just she and I together
Like it was meant to be
The sound of laughter coming through the window made him cringe. It was Alanna's laugh: rare in coming, yet light-hearted and free. He, Jon, would always be there for her, but he doubted she would need his comfort and support now. She had someone else for that. Despite the friendship between the King and his Champion, she would not be his.
And when she was lonely
I was there to comfort her
And I knew that she loved me
Someone knocked on the door. Jonathan ignored it. Tentatively Thayet entered the room. She caught sight of her husband.
"They're waiting for you," she told him quietly.
"I don't feel well," he informed her. My heart is broken… He turned back to the window. Slowly, she left.
So the years went by
We grew apart
And she began to drift away
I was left alone
Still I waited for the day
When she'd say "I will always love you"
The King looked back on recent events. Sure, he and Alanna were friends. She had confirmed that.
"I love you, Jon," she had said, that day in the council room. He started to smile.
Lonely and forgotten
Never thought she'd look my way
She smiled at me and held me just like she use to do

When she loved me
Slowly Jon stood up. Was it just his imagination, or had he just seen Alanna staring at his window? The King headed towards the ceremony. After all, he loved her…
