The Never-ending Car Alarm
By Cerys

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

Harry Potter lay wide-awake in bed.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

It was the summer and he had just returned to number four, Privet Drive after another year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

He hadn't been sleeping all that well this summer, and Harry wished it could be put down at least mostly, if not entirely, to nightmares. Unfortunately, it couldn't.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

It had been going on for the last two weeks. Day and night, day and night. Never ending.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

Dudley had taken to wearing his Walkman twenty-four-seven to block out the sound. Uncle Vernon was spending as much time as he could out of the house, deciding that work without the noise was better that holiday with it, and Aunt Petunia was playing the radio so loud that Harry was sure that the ghosts at Hogwarts could hear it. Harry, however, did not have the luxury of music to drown it out.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

Neither did her have housework to do to help him focus on something else as Uncle Vernon was taking all his important clients to fancy French restaurants instead of inviting them back to number 4. So, Harry spent his days looking out of the window watching for owls from Ron, Hermione, school, Hagrid. anyone!

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

No one even knew whose car it was so that they could yell at them and make them turn it off.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

So, here he was, lying in bed at four in the morning trying to sleep. And he couldn't. Harry wondered if it might be some dastardly trick of Voldemort's to drive him completely insane, but on reflection he decided that that was probably the hysteria kicking in.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

Finally, not being able to stand it anymore, Harry stood up and picked up his wand from the table. At that moment he didn't care whether he got expelled from school, didn't care that it could mean a lifetime with no escape from the Dursleys, all he knew was that he had to stop that bloody car alarm.

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

BANG!

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!

Silence. Sweet, blessed silence. Feeling happier that he had done in weeks, Harry lay back down on his bed, took off his glasses and closed his eyes. .

Beepbeep, beepbeep, beepbeep.

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

The End.
