The night of the blackout was intoxicating. Liz remembered how it felt to feel only the moonlight pouring down on her and Max. There hands were clenched together as always and she remembered how soft his profile looked next to her.

They had been in New York four months now. It was easy to get lost there - they were only two more faces in the crowd. Not to mention there were half a million people there that would be suspected to be aliens before they ever were.

Still, they couldn't stay much longer. Four months was a long time for them to stay in one place.

But Liz couldn't describe how happy she was to be there that night.

The day had been hot, and they had spent it in the park, sweating and talking in hushed tones about the craziness of it all. All around them, people were rushing to get home - walking miles to their destinations.

Liz and Max were happy where they were.

Once night fell, they found a spot on the grass, letting the cool night breeze wash over them.

It was almost like being back in Roswell - almost. The city was so quiet - so peaceful. There were people all around them, the same ideas no doubt running through their head. But to Liz and Max, no one else mattered.

They sat mostly in silence, Liz leaning against Max, feeling the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed. They didn't need to speak - she couldn't think of anything she could say to make the moment better. It was just the two of them - and the whole world faded into the background.

For that night, they forgot how long they had been running. They forgot the paranoia and the constant looking over their shoulders. They forgot that life for them would never be as simple as it was at that moment.

A part of Liz foolishly hoped that the lights would never come back on - that they could stay like this forever - just two more people soaking in the moonlight, enjoying the most important luxury of it all - each other.

...the end.
