A lone rider entered the gates of Imladris. The elven city that had once been so beautiful was now unkept, and the hands of time had changed it. Legolas Greenleaf was on a mission though, he was determined to remember one last time his friend from so long ago.
It had been so long ago since last he had seen Estel. The mention of his name brought tears to his eyes. Legolas remembered the day he had died; how he had held his hand until the brother of his heart had drawn his last breath. Their time together had been so short but Estel had touched his life in so many ways.
Legolas dismounted and looked around. He thought back to all the times he had with his friend. His father had warned him about getting to close to the edain; but in the end had given in. Legolas could almost hear Estel's laugh as he entered the Halls of Fire.
As he came upon his friend's old room he thought of all the secrets they had shared and adventures they had plotted.
As Legolas left the house and entered the gardens, he thought of Elrond. He had loved him like he was his own. This had been a refuge for Legolas when he needed to get away. Always open arms met him when he came. he had felt safe here.
The tears now overtook Legolas and his body heaved with sobs. Why did Estel have to die and leave him here alone? As his tear filled eyes gazed upon the gates,he remembered the many times one had carried the other through them. Estel many times had stood vigil over him, never wavering until he had recovered.
Legolas slowly went back to his horse. He must now sail to the Undying Lands to meet his father and friends. The only one missing from his heart would be Estel. He vowed to keep his memory alive with stories. Everyone would know of the edain which had been the brother of his heart.
As he appraoched the gates he took one last look back. The tears now came unheeded. He could almost sense Estel's presence. Never again would he lay eyes on the place where secrets had been shared, broken hearts mended, and eternal friends had been made. With a choked whisper he said"may the Valar watch over you Estel and guide you to me again one day." He put his horse into a gallop,as the trees seemed to whisper one last word "Estel".
