Perfect Excuse

The trouble wasn't with her body. It could quite easily sleep and sleep and carry on sleeping. No, the problem was with her mind. Whereas her body wasn't adverse to sleep, her mind was. Her mind liked being active, it liked to think.
That was what she blamed anyway. How else could you explain the nightmares, the weird dreams, waking up after only a few hours sleep to think some more about the latest case, or even just a case that was so cold it was frozen, but just happened to register suddenly in your mind?
Her mind liked torture.
Now, however, her mind had found something outside of word to ponder over, in the hours where her body was still asleep but her mind was very much awake and alert. If you'd told her a few months ago that in those hours she would be pondering a guy, she would have laughed in your face. After the disaster that was Hank, she'd actively distanced herself from any type of relationship, much less that of a guy in a romantic way.
Tell her it was Warrick she would currently be thinking about, and the look would have turned decidedly more chilly. Ok, so they worked fairly well together now, and were possibly what you could class as friends. But a relationship with the guy? She'd never even considered it.
But no, here she was, wide-awake in bed, being held in the arms of Warrick. She still wasn't quite sure what had happened. One minute they had been working another case. The next they had been kissing. Stranger things had occurred, she supposed, she just couldn't think of them right now.
Of course, he was asleep. He could sleep through anything. A few weeks back the fire alarm had gone off in her apartment building…not a peep out of him. He hadn't even seemed to stirr. It was quite worrying really. What if there had been a fire? His defence was that the smoke from a real fire would have woken him, and as she hadn't moved out of his arms, he had assumed that there hadn't been a fire and stayed asleep.
A few months ago she would have envied the easy slumber. A few months ago she would have been alone, and awake and studying some case file, though. Now she had the perfect excuse to be awake. Now she got to appreciate him even more.
Her mind still contemplated work. She even still had the odd nightmare. But now, she had someone there holding her when she woke up too suddenly. And whilst he pretty much slept through it, Sara would feel his arms tighten around her, as if he knew anyway.
Of course he didn't always stay asleep. He could sleep through a fire alarm, but tickle him just behind his right ear, then he'd sit bold upright within five seconds. Pull the covers off him, and he'd be awake and grumbling within a few minutes.
Usually, though, she just enjoyed the perfect excuse of wallowing in his touch, of being allowed an uninterrupted staring session. Of just being with him. Usually people cited love as a reason to get up in the morning. For her, it was the perfect reason to stay in bed.
